To resume a YouTube Live loop after OBS closes, you need two separate things: a way to relaunch OBS and a way to make OBS start streaming when it opens. OBS’s Settings → Advanced → Automatically Reconnect setting is for a broken connection while OBS is running; it does not relaunch a closed OBS process. Set up an operating-system launch or supervisor mechanism, add OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter if you want streaming to begin automatically, and test what YouTube does with the broadcast after a restart.
What has to recover when OBS restarts
A loop stream depends on several separate parts working together. OBS must open again, load the right streaming destination and scene, play the loop source, and send video to YouTube. YouTube must then accept the feed and, depending on your settings, start or resume a broadcast. A setting that fixes one part does not guarantee the others.
- OBS exits: An operating-system launch configuration or external supervisor must start the application again. OBS’s launch parameter does not monitor the process or restart it after it exits.
- The network connection drops: OBS’s automatic reconnect setting can address a temporary interruption while OBS remains open.
- YouTube receives the encoder feed: The stream URL and stream key identify where OBS sends video. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls determine whether encoder signals also start or end the broadcast.
- The loop resumes: Confirm the media source plays after the relaunch. The cited OBS guidance establishes that video can be used as a source, but does not establish how a particular loop source behaves after a process restart.
Neither OBS’s launch guidance nor YouTube’s settings guidance guarantees that a full OBS restart will preserve the same broadcast object, watch page, archive, or uninterrupted viewer experience. Test the setup you intend to use rather than assuming continuity.

Check the intended YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the stream you plan to use and verify the stream URL and stream key in OBS. YouTube uses the key to identify and accept the encoder feed. If you reuse a custom stream key for repeated sessions, keep it secret as you would a password. If it is exposed, reset it and replace it in OBS.

Choose YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop behavior
Review the auto-start and auto-stop controls for that stream. When enabled, YouTube says, “you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” Auto-start can remove a manual Go Live step when encoder content arrives. Auto-stop may be undesirable if you want more deliberate control over ending a broadcast. These settings do not promise that a restarted encoder will continue the same event or watch page. Confirm their effect in a test broadcast.

Enable OBS automatic reconnect for connection interruptions
In OBS, open
Settings → Advancedand review Automatically Reconnect. This is for interruptions between OBS and the streaming server; it is not a process supervisor. If OBS has closed, this setting alone cannot open it again.Rank #2

Arrange for OBS to launch again
Use an operating-system launch configuration or a separate process supervisor to start OBS after an exit or reboot. OBS documents parameterized shortcuts and automated or scheduled launching. Add
--startstreamingto the OBS launch command or shortcut if each launch should also begin streaming. That parameter starts streaming as OBS launches; it does not itself detect a crash or relaunch the application. -
Check the complete setup after reopening
Confirm OBS opens with the intended profile, destination, stream key, scene, and loop source. Start the loop and check that it is playing and sending the expected audio and video. The cited OBS Quick Start Guide confirms that video is a supported source type; it does not document persistence or automatic playback behavior for every source after a restart, so verify your source directly.

Test the restart before relying on it
- Set up a private or unlisted test broadcast if that option is available for your stream.
- Watch the stream from a second device, separate from the computer running OBS.
- With the loop running, close OBS or perform the restart you want to recover from. Confirm that the launch mechanism opens OBS and that
--startstreaming, if configured, starts the encoder. - Check picture, sound, and loop playback in YouTube’s preview and on the separate device. Confirm whether YouTube starts the broadcast automatically and whether the expected watch URL remains usable.
- Repeat the test for a temporary network interruption if that is also a concern. A successful process-restart test does not prove that reconnect behavior works, or vice versa.
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover, checking stream preview and accessibility, and monitoring audio and video. YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that policy should not be taken as a guarantee about archive behavior across an OBS restart.

Troubleshoot common restart failures
- OBS does not reopen: The launch configuration or supervisor has not started it. Check that the mechanism is configured to launch OBS after the event you care about, such as an application exit or system reboot.
- OBS opens but does not stream: Check whether the launch command includes
--startstreaming. If you prefer manual control, start the stream yourself and verify YouTube receives the encoder feed. - YouTube does not start the broadcast: Review the stream key, stream URL, and auto-start setting in YouTube Studio. Test the setting rather than assuming encoder arrival will start the event.
- The stream returns but the loop is blank, stopped, or silent: Check the active scene and media source after reopening. The general OBS guidance does not establish that every source resumes at the expected point or loops automatically after a restart.
- OBS remains open but reports dropped frames or connection trouble: Treat this as a network issue, not a process-restart problem. OBS identifies unstable network paths, bitrate limits, VPN or security software, and faulty network hardware among possible causes. Check the connection and applicable bitrate limits, and test changes separately so you can identify what helped.
- The stream returns on a different or unusable watch page: Test the exact YouTube stream and auto-start/auto-stop configuration you plan to use. The official settings do not establish that a full encoder process restart preserves the same event or viewer continuity.
