The encoder stays attached to the remote session rather than your SSH terminal, so an SSH disconnect alone does not end it. This protects against a lost terminal connection—not an encoder crash, host reboot, server termination, or failed network connection.
Keep the encoder running with tmux

Connect to the remote host over SSH, then start or reattach to a named tmux session:
tmux new-session -A -s youtube-liveThe
-Aoption attaches to the named session if it already exists, or creates it if it does not. If you may have started the encoder before, check the session before launching another copy. -
Start your encoder from the shell inside the tmux session. Use your existing encoder command and YouTube stream settings; the right command depends on the encoder you use.

When the encoder is running, press Ctrl+b, release both keys, then press d. This detaches you from tmux without exiting the shell or stopping the encoder. You can now close SSH.

To check the session later, reconnect to the same host as the same user and list sessions:
tmux list-sessionsReattach to the exact named session:
tmux attach-session -t '=youtube-live'The exact-name target avoids accidentally selecting a similarly named session. Do not type a second encoder command into a session that already has one running.

Run tmux on the remote host. Starting tmux on your laptop and then opening SSH inside it does not protect a program running on the remote host when that remote SSH connection ends. Also, detach with Ctrl+b, then d; exiting the shell in the pane can end the program and session.
Choose the right recovery method
These options cover different failure cases. A reattachable terminal is useful for an SSH disconnect; it is not automatically a crash-recovery or reboot-recovery system.

Use nohup for a simple logged background command
If you only need to leave a command running in the background and capture its output, a common pattern is:

nohup command > output.log 2>&1 &Replace command with your encoder command. This does not give you the same interactive terminal you get with tmux, and it does not by itself restart a crashed encoder or recover from a reboot.
Use a service manager for crash or reboot recovery
If the encoder must restart after a crash or start after the host reboots, use a service manager or supervisor configured for your operating system and encoder. The unit, restart policy, user permissions, and exact command depend on your deployment; there is no safe universal service definition without those details.

Check the YouTube encoder connection
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room, entered in the encoder’s stream settings. YouTube describes encoders as streaming software or standalone hardware. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Treat the stream key as a credential: use the key intended for the stream and do not share it publicly.

YouTube also offers RTMPS, which it describes as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Get the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room if you want that transport; it secures the encoder-to-YouTube connection but does not keep a process alive after SSH disconnects. See YouTube’s RTMPS information.
SSH and the encoder’s connection to YouTube are separate links. tmux addresses the lifetime of the encoder process relative to your SSH terminal; it cannot repair an outbound network failure or a problem on YouTube’s receiving side.

Check whether the encoder is still running. Reconnect to the remote host and inspect or reattach to the tmux session. If the session is gone, the pane’s shell may have exited, the process may have crashed, or the host may have stopped.

Check the remote host. If it rebooted, was terminated, or became unavailable, tmux cannot preserve the process through that event. Configure an appropriate service manager or supervisor if automatic restart or boot recovery is required.

Check the encoder and YouTube status. YouTube recommends using a current encoder, checking stream quality in the encoder, reviewing dashboard errors and encoder CPU load, and testing outbound internet connectivity. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance to distinguish encoder, connection, and dashboard problems.

Check whether YouTube is receiving content. YouTube says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” That describes the stream lifecycle, not SSH behavior. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this is an archive rule, not a promise that an encoder or connection will remain healthy. See YouTube’s guidance on ending a live stream.
