To bring an FFmpeg YouTube stream back after a VPS reboot, run FFmpeg as a boot-enabled service with a restart policy, then verify that YouTube is receiving the feed and that the broadcast is actually live. These are separate checks: restarting the process does not guarantee a working encoder connection or an audience-facing broadcast.
What needs to recover after a reboot
There are two layers to configure. The VPS service manager must start the encoder when the operating system boots and restart it if the process exits. Separately, the encoder must reconnect to YouTube with a valid stream URL and key, and the YouTube broadcast must be in the right state.
FFmpeg’s network-reconnect options address some connection errors while FFmpeg is running; they do not start FFmpeg after a reboot. A boot service addresses process startup, but cannot by itself confirm that media is reaching YouTube or that a scheduled broadcast has been taken live. YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes the stream resource, which describes transmission, from the broadcast resource, which represents the broadcast: check both sides of the workflow.
Set up the encoder and YouTube broadcast

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream you intend to use. Copy the stream URL and stream key for that stream.

Configure your encoder to send media to that URL using the key. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public repositories, shell history, and logs where possible, and restrict access to the configuration that stores it.

If using RTMPS, select the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room and confirm that your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; the ordinary RTMP URL may be displayed by default.

Start the encoder and check for the preview in Live Control Room. For scheduled streams, YouTube’s instructions say to click Go live there when the preview is ready. Do not assume that an encoder reconnect performs this broadcast action.
Run FFmpeg as a boot-enabled service
On a Linux VPS using systemd, put the actual FFmpeg command and its required paths, environment, and credentials in a service unit appropriate to that system. Enable the service to start at boot and start it now; an Ubuntu community deployment illustrates the pattern of using Restart=always and systemctl enable --now. Treat that as an example, not a universal unit file or a guaranteed configuration: the correct service depends on the operating system, input, command, permissions, and stream workflow.

After configuring the unit, verify its status and inspect its logs. A service that is enabled but repeatedly exits is not a recovered stream. Check for missing input files, invalid FFmpeg options, permissions, unavailable network resources, or incorrect URL/key configuration. Retain enough logs to diagnose restarts, while avoiding logging the stream key.
Choose supervision that matches the failure you need to catch
- Basic service-manager unit: starts the encoder at boot and can restart a process that exits. This is the simpler option, but a process that remains alive while its input or output is stale may not trigger a restart.
- More elaborate supervisor: can add checks for input health and YouTube broadcast state, plus monitoring or alerts. It takes more setup and must be designed for the particular broadcast lifecycle; no single supervisor or unit is right for every VPS and stream.
Use FFmpeg reconnect options for network failures
FFmpeg documents protocol options for reconnecting after certain network errors, treating end-of-file as an error for live or endless sources, setting retry limits, and limiting retry delays. Their applicability depends on the installed FFmpeg version, protocol, and whether the affected connection is an input or output. Consult the documentation matching your installed version before adding flags to the command.

Keep the distinction clear: protocol retries help an already-running FFmpeg process deal with applicable connection failures. They do not make the process start after a VPS reboot, and they do not change YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle. Use service supervision for boot and process recovery, and test network retry behavior separately.

After the VPS returns, check that the service is enabled and active, then inspect its logs to confirm FFmpeg started and is not repeatedly exiting.

Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview or media and inspect the broadcast state and visibility. If a scheduled broadcast is waiting for an action, use the relevant Live Control Room control.

If the process is running but YouTube receives no media, investigate the input, stream URL and key, protocol support, and network path. If YouTube shows ingest but viewers cannot watch, check the preview, broadcast state, visibility, and any required Go live action.
Troubleshoot common reboot and reconnect failures
- It works when started manually but not after reboot: check that the service is enabled for boot, not merely started in the current session. Confirm its status after a reboot.
- The service starts and then exits: inspect service and FFmpeg logs for missing files, invalid options, permission errors, unavailable inputs, or configuration mistakes.
- FFmpeg stays running, but the feed is disconnected or stale: check input health and network behavior. Review whether reconnect settings apply to the actual protocol and installed FFmpeg version; a live process is not proof of current media output.
- YouTube receives media, but the audience cannot see the stream: inspect Live Control Room preview, broadcast status, visibility, and scheduled-stream controls.
- The stream key may have been exposed: rotate it in YouTube Studio and update the protected service configuration.
- The stream ended and was archived: YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is archive guidance, not a guarantee that a VPS reboot will reconnect or resume a broadcast.
