How to Keep a YouTube Live Video Playlist Running After a Power Cut

A YouTube playlist loop is viewer-side playback, not live-stream recovery. Use a UPS for brief outages, test encoder recovery, and keep a local recording backup.

A YouTube playlist loop does not keep a live broadcast running through a power cut: it repeats videos for viewers, while a live encoder must keep sending video to YouTube. To prevent a brief outage, put the streaming computer and necessary network gear on a correctly sized UPS. For a longer outage, recovery depends on the computer, operating system, encoder and YouTube stream settings—and must be tested on your setup.

First, clarify what “playlist” means

If you mean a playlist on a YouTube watch page, its loop setting repeats playback on the viewer’s device. It does not create a live broadcast or restart one when the creator’s equipment loses power. YouTube explains playlist looping in its playlist looping guide.

If you mean a sequence of prerecorded videos being sent as a YouTube Live broadcast, an encoder must send that video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. If the encoder computer or its internet connection stops, the incoming live feed can stop too.

Prevent a brief power cut with a UPS

A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) can temporarily power your streaming computer and the network equipment it needs, such as a modem or router. Connect the equipment that must remain on to the UPS; protecting only the computer may not help if the router loses power.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a UPS based on the combined power draw of the connected equipment and the amount of runtime you need. Do not assume a particular runtime from the UPS capacity alone: actual load and the device’s specifications matter. Test the whole setup under realistic conditions.

  • A UPS can bridge a short local power interruption while its battery lasts.
  • It cannot provide indefinite power if the outage continues beyond its runtime.
  • It cannot prevent a live interruption caused by an independent internet outage.

Plan for recovery after a longer outage

If power runs out or the computer shuts down, the UPS is no longer the recovery plan. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control parts of the broadcast workflow, but they do not restore power or guarantee that the computer and encoder app will restart and resume streaming. YouTube describes the settings this way: “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” See Manage live stream settings.

  1. Prepare the YouTube stream. Set up the live stream and retain its stream key securely. Confirm the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop choices in YouTube Studio; use the current controls described in YouTube’s stream-settings guide.
  2. Check the computer and encoder recovery separately. Determine whether the computer starts after power returns and whether your chosen encoder launches and resumes the stream. Startup and resume behavior depends on the operating system, encoder and stream configuration; there is no universal YouTube setting that handles every combination.
  3. Test the complete outage-and-recovery sequence. Simulate the failure safely, then check whether the encoder reconnects, whether YouTube receives the feed and whether the public watch page is live. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and continuously monitoring stream health; see its live streaming tips.

Do not rely on unattended recovery until you have tested the exact computer, encoder and stream configuration you plan to use.

Use failover and monitoring where interruption matters

A backup encoder or internet route can add redundancy, but it is a separate failover design that needs validation. YouTube’s documented failover test is to stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable and check that the player rolls to the backup encoder. Follow the platform’s encoder testing and monitoring guidance; do not assume a backup works until the test confirms it.

Protect the recording, not just the broadcast

A recording can help recover content lost during an interruption, but it does not keep a broadcast live. YouTube recommends a local backup: “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. See Archive live streams and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Enable and verify a local recording workflow if you need a copy independent of YouTube’s archive. Keep the recording destination and available storage in mind during long broadcasts.

Do not mistake viewer controls for creator recovery

Playlist looping repeats playback for a viewer; DVR lets viewers pause or resume parts of a live stream. Neither control restarts a failed encoder. YouTube notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Details are in its DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not return

  • The computer is off. The UPS may have run out, or the outage exceeded its supported runtime. Restore power and check the computer before diagnosing YouTube settings.
  • The computer restarted, but the encoder did not. Check the encoder’s startup and resume configuration for your operating system. Test that exact sequence; YouTube’s auto-start option does not launch an encoder app.
  • The encoder is open, but YouTube is not receiving video. Check the internet connection, encoder output and stream URL/key configuration. Review YouTube’s stream health and follow its monitoring guidance.
  • The feed returns, but the watch page is not live. Check the stream’s auto-start/auto-stop choices and confirm the broadcast state in YouTube Studio. The behavior depends on how the stream is configured.
  • The broadcast resumes, but the archive is incomplete or missing. YouTube’s archive capture has a 12-hour caveat. Use a local recording as a separate backup for important content.
  • Viewers report that they cannot rewind. Viewer DVR is distinct from encoder recovery and may be limited on streams longer than 12 hours.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep prerecorded videos playing on YouTube Live without relying on a powered-on home computer, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
