When a cloud relay reconnects, keep the loop and encoder sending if they are still healthy, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room to see whether it is receiving usable data. If viewers need continuity during an interruption, configure a provider-supported fallback video—but verify exactly which outages it covers. A reconnect can restore the live feed without preventing a viewer-visible gap.
What needs to stay working
A continuous loop stream depends on several linked parts: the video source, the encoder that sends it, your outbound internet connection, the cloud relay, and YouTube’s ingest. A failure at any one layer can interrupt the feed. Keeping the source and encoder alive may let a relay recover without rebuilding the stream, but it cannot fix every connection or YouTube ingest problem.
Separate two goals: restoring the live feed and avoiding dead air for viewers. A relay may reconnect and resume sending without playing anything in the meantime. Fallback playback is a separate feature that must be supported and configured by the provider.
Diagnose the interruption in order
1. Check YouTube Live Control Room
Open Live Control Room and inspect the stream health indicator and timestamped errors. YouTube may identify a format or configuration problem, such as an unsupported stream format or incorrect keyframe frequency. Fix a reported ingest issue before treating the relay or encoder as the cause. YouTube’s Live streaming error messages page describes these errors.

The YouTube Live Streaming API also distinguishes stream lifecycle states—created, ready, active, inactive, and error—from health states such as good, ok, bad, and noData. In Google’s API documentation, noData means YouTube’s backend has no information about the stream’s health; it does not by itself identify which upstream component failed. See LiveStreams.
2. Confirm the loop and encoder are still producing
Inspect the encoder’s output rather than assuming that a relay reconnect means the source is healthy. Confirm that video and audio are present and that the loop is advancing as intended. YouTube recommends updating encoder software, checking the stream’s look and sound, and checking CPU load or a local archive where relevant. If the encoder has stopped, restore the source or encoder first. If it is producing correctly but YouTube receives no usable data, investigate the outbound connection and relay path separately.
3. Test the connection and ingest configuration
Test outbound internet connectivity, as YouTube advises. If your setup uses RTMPS, check that the encoder or relay is using a valid YouTube endpoint and application path and connecting on port 443. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL in its RTMPS delivery documentation. These checks apply to the YouTube ingest connection; they do not guarantee that an intermediary cloud service will reconnect successfully.

If a third-party encoder reports a start error while using a stream key, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to get a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Do not replace a key merely because a cloud relay is reconnecting; first check the error and the service’s instructions.
4. Resolve any stream-health error before changing hardware
YouTube’s error and health guidance covers problems involving formats, codecs, keyframes, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and mismatches between primary and backup streams. Follow the specific error shown in Live Control Room and correct the relevant encoder or ingest setting. An error about stream configuration is not evidence that reconnect logic itself is failing.

Use fallback playback if viewers need continuity
A cloud relay’s fallback video can play while the live source is offline and reconnecting, giving viewers something other than a blank or interrupted live feed. Restream documents this as disconnect protection. That documentation describes Restream’s feature; it does not establish that every provider offers it, or that it covers every outage, plan, loop setup, or interruption length.

- What kinds of disconnect trigger fallback playback?
- Does the fallback continue for the full reconnection period, and what happens if the outage lasts longer?
- Does the live stream resume automatically, or must you restart it?
- Which plans and configurations include the feature, and what will viewers see during the switch back?
Keeping the source and encoder alive can support recovery; fallback playback addresses what viewers see during the gap. Neither should be assumed to cover a failure elsewhere in the path.
