Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo resume a playlist process automatically after a Linux VPS reboots, run it in the foreground as a systemd service, enable that service at boot, and set a deliberate restart policy. Then verify that media is actually advancing: a service can be active even when playback or a YouTube Live feed has stalled.
First clarify what “YouTube playlist stream” means. The instructions below cover both playing playlist media on the VPS and broadcasting it as a public YouTube Live stream; the media command and the health check differ. A headless-server guide also distinguishes local playback from publishing a live event.
Choose the kind of stream you mean
- Headless playback: a player on the VPS reads a YouTube playlist and plays its items on the server. This does not, by itself, publish anything to your YouTube channel.
- Outgoing YouTube Live broadcast: a media process reads video files or playlist media and sends an encoded feed to a YouTube Live event. You need a valid destination and stream key, and must check the incoming feed in YouTube’s live controls.
Both approaches need a boot-enabled process supervisor, but they are not interchangeable. A player-managed YouTube playlist and an FFmpeg broadcast pipeline have different commands, credentials, and ways to confirm recovery.
Test the media command before creating a service
Run the intended command interactively as the account that will run the service. Confirm that it can access the playlist and its media, and that its output goes to the intended destination. For local playback, check that the player advances through the playlist or produces the expected output. For a broadcast, confirm that the YouTube Live event receives an advancing feed.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Using mpv for YouTube playlist playback
mpv can use its youtube-dl-compatible integration to handle YouTube URLs. Its manual advises supplying the actual playlist URL when you want playlist playback. See the mpv manual. This is a playback method, not a command for sending a live broadcast to your channel.
Using yt-dlp with a player
yt-dlp can pipe media to a player through standard streams; its FAQ documents this approach. Check the current syntax for your installed versions and test it under the service account. The mpv/yt-dlp integration can be affected by upstream YouTube changes, so a command that worked previously may need updating.

Broadcasting playlist media
For a public broadcast, use a media command configured to read your playlist or files and publish to the YouTube Live destination. Keep the command in the foreground so systemd can supervise it. Do not place a real stream key in a publicly readable script or unit; use a restricted configuration or secrets mechanism, and make sure the service account can read it.
Create a systemd service
Use a dedicated unprivileged account where practical. Replace the example paths, user, and command with the values on your VPS. This is a starting template, not a tested universal unit.

What the settings do
After=network-online.targetorders startup after the system’s network-online target; it does not guarantee internet access or YouTube availability.Type=simplesuits a command that stays in the foreground. Do not daemonize or background the command: systemd needs to track the process.UserandWorkingDirectorydetermine which account runs the command and where relative paths resolve. Ensure that account can read the playlist, media, and configuration.Restart=on-failureasks systemd to restart after covered failure exits.RestartSec=10adds a delay before restart; choose a delay appropriate to your workload.
Systemd’s unit documentation describes restart behavior and its limits; exact details can depend on the systemd version installed on your distribution. See the systemd service documentation. A restart policy does not necessarily detect a process that remains alive but has stopped making progress. Avoid setting aggressive retries that conceal a persistent bad command or credential.
Keep secrets out of the unit text when possible. If you use an environment file, restrict its permissions and ensure it is readable by the service as configured.

Enable the service and inspect it
- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/playlist-stream.service, adjusting the name if desired. - Reload systemd and enable startup:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl enable --now playlist-stream.serviceenablelinks the unit into the configured boot dependencies;--nowalso starts it immediately. See the systemctl documentation. - Check the process state:
systemctl status playlist-stream.service - Follow its logs:
journalctl -u playlist-stream.service -f
For configuration changes, reload systemd again and restart the service. A successful start means the process started; it does not prove the playlist is advancing or YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Add media-layer recovery only where it applies
Systemd can restart a process after an exit, while media tools may recover some input or output interruptions internally. These mechanisms solve different problems. Use protocol-specific options in the correct position in the command line: many FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, not globally.

HTTP input reconnection in FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol supports options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_streamed for selected disconnect, end-of-file, and streamed-input cases. Consult the FFmpeg HTTP protocol documentation and the installed version’s help before applying them. They do not repair an expired URL, access denial, invalid media, or every application-level stall.
Output recovery with the FIFO muxer
For applicable output pipelines, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer offers recovery options such as attempt_recovery. This is a separate output-side mechanism, not a general replacement for input reconnection or process supervision. Check the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation and confirm that the chosen format and installed version support the options you use.
FFmpeg contributor Michael Niedermayer described reconnect options in a 2015-09-07 commit as allowing “reconnecting endless live streams which fail with eof” (FFmpeg commit record). That describes a particular recovery purpose; it is not a guarantee that all YouTube or media failures recover automatically.
Test a reboot and verify media, not just the service
- Reboot the VPS during a suitable maintenance window.
- After it returns, check
systemctl status playlist-stream.serviceand inspect boot-era logs withjournalctl -u playlist-stream.service. - For headless playback, verify observable output or that the player is progressing through the playlist.
- For an outgoing broadcast, inspect the receiving YouTube Live event and confirm that the incoming feed is present and advancing.
If the service is active but the media is frozen, systemd’s process-level status alone will not identify or repair the problem. Add an application-appropriate health check or monitoring method if detecting silent stalls is important to your setup.

| Symptom | Likely area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Service fails immediately at boot | Unit or executable | Check the absolute ExecStart path, command syntax, working directory, file permissions, and logs. Run the command manually as the configured service user. |
| Works interactively but not as a service | Environment or access | Compare the service user’s access to media, configuration, and credentials. Set needed paths explicitly; do not assume an interactive shell environment is available. |
| Fails while waiting for YouTube or network | Connectivity or boot timing | network-online.target supplies ordering, not proof of internet reachability. Review logs and use a measured restart delay; confirm the VPS can reach the required service. |
| Playlist URL no longer resolves | Media extraction | Check that the URL is valid and available, then verify compatible, current mpv/yt-dlp components. Upstream YouTube changes can affect extraction. |
| Process is active but playback is stuck | Silent media stall | Check actual output and media progress. A restart policy for failed exits may not detect a process that is still running but frozen. |
| YouTube Live receives no feed | Broadcast destination or key | Check the destination configuration, stream key, event state, network, and FFmpeg logs. Protect the key; systemd cannot fix an invalid key or destination. |
| FFmpeg does not reconnect | Option scope or protocol | Confirm the option applies to the protocol and direction in use, is placed before the relevant input or output, and exists in your installed FFmpeg version. |
