A computer running your streaming software cannot keep encoding and sending a livestream once the computer enters system sleep. Keep the computer awake for the broadcast and, if you want, set its display to turn off separately. If the stream must continue while your computer is asleep or unavailable, use a separately configured encoder—or have a cloud service send an uploaded recording to YouTube.
What “sleep” means for a YouTube livestream
In a typical computer-based setup, streaming software on the computer encodes the audio and video and sends them to YouTube. If the computer sleeps, do not expect that software to keep transmitting. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires an encoder to send the stream to the platform; YouTube does not provide a setting that keeps a sleeping computer’s encoder working. Turning off the screen is different from putting the computer to sleep. You can usually let the display go dark while preventing system sleep. Closing a laptop lid may trigger sleep even if you have changed a separate timeout, so check that behavior before relying on a closed laptop.
Keep a Windows 11 computer awake while streaming
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts.
- Under the relevant plugged-in or battery condition, set Make my device sleep after to a duration that covers the entire broadcast. If your device offers an option to prevent sleep, use it while streaming.
- Set Turn my screen off after separately if you want the display to turn off without putting the computer to sleep.
- If you plan to close a laptop lid, review When I close the lid in Power Options. Many laptops sleep when the lid closes, so a screen timeout setting alone may not keep the stream running.
Microsoft documents separate screen-off and sleep controls in its Windows 11 power settings guidance. Available choices can vary by device. Its guidance on sleep and laptop lid behavior explains why closing the lid needs its own check.

Keep a Mac laptop awake with its display off
Apple documents the setting Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off in Battery settings. Enable it when the Mac is connected to power and you want the screen off without automatic sleep. Keep the Mac plugged in for a long broadcast, and check the current macOS interface on your model because labels and locations can vary by release. This prevents automatic sleep under the described condition; it does not let the Mac keep encoding while it is actually asleep. See Apple’s Mac laptop Battery settings guide.
Start and monitor the YouTube stream
- In your encoder, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key for the event. Treat the stream key as private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start the encoder and confirm that its preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room before you go live.
- Test the setup ahead of the real event. During the broadcast, monitor the event and the stream-health information in Live Control Room.
- After the YouTube event has ended, stop the encoder. YouTube’s computer livestream tips recommend testing and monitoring, and say to stop the encoder after the event ends. Its encoder settings and stream metrics guidance covers stream health and monitoring.
Keeping the computer awake is a practical setting, not an uptime guarantee. Power loss, a dropped network connection, encoder problems, operating-system updates, or YouTube issues can still interrupt a broadcast.

If the computer must sleep or be unavailable
Use a standalone hardware encoder
YouTube supports standalone hardware encoders as an alternative to streaming software running on the computer. A hardware encoder is a separate device that must be configured to send the stream; it does not make the sleeping computer continue encoding. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events in its computer livestream tips. Before choosing equipment, verify that the particular model supports your intended YouTube workflow, inputs, network connection, and streaming protocol. No specific model is established here.
Use a cloud service for an uploaded recording
If your podcast is a prerecorded video rather than a live camera or microphone feed, a cloud service can send the uploaded recording to YouTube without relying on your home computer. Why the stream may still stop
- The computer sleeps: Increase or disable the system sleep timeout for the broadcast, and check lid-close behavior on a laptop.
- The screen goes dark and the stream stops: Check whether the computer entered system sleep rather than only turning off the display. Set display and sleep timeouts separately.
- The stream never appears in Live Control Room: Check that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key, is running, and is sending data. Confirm the preview before going live.
- The stream drops mid-broadcast: Check power, network connectivity, encoder status, and the stream-health information in Live Control Room. The cited guidance does not establish a failure rate or guarantee uninterrupted service.
- The laptop sleeps when closed: Review the lid-close action; a separate sleep timeout may not override it.
- The Mac sleeps with the display off: Confirm it is connected to power and that Apple’s prevent-automatic-sleep setting is enabled.
