The key distinction is that replacing or sequencing the source video is not the same as stopping the encoder: YouTube’s encoder instructions say the stream ends when the encoder stops sending content. But neither those instructions nor the media tools below guarantee that every change is seamless or that a disconnected encoder will resume the same broadcast.
How the connection and source fit together
A server-based stream has two separate parts: the media source (the file or sequence being played) and the encoder output sent to YouTube using a server URL and stream key. To keep the YouTube feed going during a source change, keep that output configured and running while changing or sequencing the upstream media using software that supports the workflow.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a liveStream as the video feed sent to YouTube and allows it to be associated with one or more liveBroadcast resources. That distinction helps explain why the incoming feed and the broadcast are separate concepts; it is not a guarantee that an encoder restart or disconnect will resume the same broadcast.
Choose a source workflow
| Workflow | Best fit | What it supports | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | Operator-controlled playback and looping | A graphical media source with a Loop option | Looping is documented; gapless transitions and safe hot-reloading of a replacement file are not guaranteed. |
| FFmpeg concat demuxer | A known, prepared sequence of files | Sequential playback from a text file list | It is not documented as an interactive playlist that can be edited reliably after FFmpeg opens it. |
Use OBS for operator-controlled playback
Set up the YouTube output
- In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or select the broadcast and copy its server URL and stream key.
- In OBS, configure the stream service and enter the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start the OBS stream and confirm that YouTube receives the encoder feed before changing the media source.
Add and loop a media file
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the video file available to the server process.
- Enable Loop if the file should restart when playback reaches its end. OBS documents Loop as off by default.
- Check the scene preview and YouTube’s incoming preview before relying on the setup. The Media Source documentation lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM; format support alone does not guarantee that every file’s video and audio will behave as expected.
- When changing to another video, use the media-source controls or scene arrangement in the running OBS session. Avoid stopping the YouTube output merely to change the upstream content. Check the outgoing preview during the transition: the configured stream may remain active even if viewers see a pause, black frame or other discontinuity.
OBS documents looping a file, not a universal hot-swap procedure for replacing a file that is already playing. If you need dependable operator-controlled switching, test the exact scene and replacement method with the same server, media files and YouTube workflow you intend to use.

Use FFmpeg for a prepared sequence
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a list of files and demuxes them in sequence. It is suited to a known playlist, not a promise of live editing: its documentation does not establish that changing the list after FFmpeg has opened it will replace the current source reliably.
Prepare compatible files and a list
- Prepare the video files in advance. For concat demuxing, files need matching streams, codecs and time base. A file with a different stream layout or incompatible encoding may fail or produce problems.
- Create a text file containing the ordered file entries using FFmpeg’s concat-demuxer list syntax. Use paths the FFmpeg process on the server can read.
- Review each file’s duration and timestamps. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps using file durations; inaccurate durations can create artifacts at boundaries.
- Start FFmpeg with the list as input and configure its output for YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key. A single universal command cannot be specified safely for every file set: whether stream copy or re-encoding is appropriate depends on source compatibility and the output configuration.
FFmpeg can read regular files and network streams and write outputs. Stream copy passes compressed packets without decoding, filtering or encoding, but it is appropriate only when the input streams are compatible with the intended output. If files need different codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts or other conversion, use an encoding workflow suited to those files rather than assuming copy will work.

When the current source must change interactively
Do not treat editing an already-open concat list as a supported live source switch. For operator-driven changes, use a media system with explicit runtime source control, such as an OBS scene workflow, and verify that its output stays active while the source changes. If you choose to restart an encoder process instead, YouTube’s documentation does not establish a general reconnect window or guarantee that the exact same broadcast will continue.
Keep the stream settings and ingest method in scope
Use the server URL and key YouTube provides for the selected broadcast, and configure the encoder for the media and output you actually have. The cited documentation does not establish one bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval or encoding profile that is right for every source and channel, so do not copy a generic setting without checking YouTube’s current guidance for your specific workflow.

For ordinary encoder ingest, do not apply HLS segment rules to an RTMP setup. YouTube describes HLS as a separate ingest option for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. It requires an HLS stream key and an encoder capable of HLS; YouTube notes its latency is higher because it sends segments rather than one continuous RTMP stream. Its HLS instructions specify TS segments 1–4 seconds long and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Those requirements apply to HLS, not generic file replacement.
Check copyright and broadcast handling
- Make sure you have the rights to stream every video and audio track in the source files. Keeping an encoder connected does not grant permission to rebroadcast the media.
- Check YouTube Studio’s live preview and stream health when starting and after a source change. Do not assume that an uninterrupted encoder process means viewers saw a seamless transition.
- YouTube’s encoder setup page says: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” This is YouTube’s stated archive behavior for streams under that duration; it does not mean an encoder restart necessarily preserves one broadcast.
Server-side operation and recovery limits
Running OBS or FFmpeg on a server can keep the encoder independent of a home computer, but the server still needs the media files, a running process, and a working path to YouTube. Monitor the process and its output rather than assuming that server hosting alone provides recovery. The reviewed YouTube instructions do not define a universal reconnect window or promise that a disconnected encoder resumes the same broadcast.

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is another managed cloud-streaming category: its documented workflow creates an input endpoint and a channel that transcodes live input into HLS or DASH output. That is an optional deployment approach, not a requirement for sending prerecorded files to YouTube; a server-side FFmpeg process may be sufficient depending on the implementation and output needs.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports no incoming feed | The encoder stopped sending, the process exited, or the server URL/key configuration is wrong. | Confirm the encoder is still running, verify the URL and key for the selected broadcast, and inspect the encoder output. A restart is not guaranteed to resume the same broadcast. |
| Playback stops at the end of a file | Looping is off, or the source is not configured as a sequence. | For OBS, check the Media Source’s Loop option. For FFmpeg, confirm the file list contains the intended sequence and that the process is still reading it. |
| Artifacts or failure at a concat boundary | Files have different streams, codecs or time bases, or duration/timestamp information is inaccurate. | Check compatibility across every file and correct the source media or use an encoding workflow that normalizes it. |
| The viewer sees a pause or black frame during a replacement | The source transition is not gapless or the replacement workflow is unsupported by the active source. | Test the actual scene and files before relying on the change; do not confuse a still-running encoder with a guaranteed seamless viewer experience. |
| HLS feed has more latency than expected | HLS uses segmented delivery and has higher latency than RTMP in YouTube’s documentation. | Confirm HLS is required for the chosen codec or HDR workflow, and apply HLS-specific segment and playlist requirements only when using HLS. |
