If OBS loses a media source, first determine whether the source stopped playing or OBS lost its connection to YouTube. If the OBS preview is blank, restore the source in your scene; if the preview is working but YouTube reports a connection problem, troubleshoot OBS’s encoder connection. These are separate failures and need different fixes.
Identify which part of the stream failed
OBS can continue sending a stream while a video source is missing, blank, hidden, or frozen. Alternatively, the source can still look normal in the OBS preview while OBS cannot send its encoded video to YouTube. A playback setting will not necessarily restore a disconnected encoder, and reconnecting the encoder will not fix a missing media file.

OBS’s Media Sources documentation covers playback controls; its Overview Guide and Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance address connection recovery. The OBS version and source type can affect the exact behavior.
Fix a source that stopped playing in OBS
Check the scene, source, and file
- In OBS, select the scene that is supposed to be on air.
- In Sources, confirm the media source is still listed and its visibility is on. Check that another source is not covering it; sources higher in the list can appear in front of those below. OBS’s Sources Guide explains adding, removing, showing, hiding, and ordering sources.
- For a local Media Source, open its properties and check that the file path points to a file that exists and is accessible. A moved, renamed, disconnected, or unavailable file will not be restored by reconnecting to YouTube.
Set local Media Source playback behavior
Use the options that match the intended playback rather than treating them as general-purpose reconnection controls:

- Loop: turn this on if the clip should replay after it reaches the end.
- Restart playback when source becomes active: enable this if the file should start from the beginning when the source is in the current scene and visible. OBS describes the option as setting the file to restart once the source is in the current scene and visible.
- Close file when inactive: if a scene switch should not cause a reload delay when you return, consider leaving this off. OBS notes that closing unloads the file and reloading can take a short time.
- Show nothing when playback ends: check this if the source should hide after reaching the end. If the source appears to vanish only when a clip finishes, this setting may explain why.
These options govern local-file playback. They do not universally reconnect a lost camera, network source, or YouTube encoder session.
Check VLC Source playlists separately
If the scene uses a VLC Video Source, inspect its playlist entries and the Loop Playlist and visibility behavior. OBS says VLC Source uses VLC libraries for extended media support and requires VLC to be installed; for 64-bit OBS, the documented requirement is 64-bit VLC. A playlist loop cannot make an unavailable file or URL available again.

Reconnect OBS when the preview works but YouTube does not
Check OBS automatic reconnect
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and inspect the automatic reconnect controls. The setting is for an interrupted stream connection between OBS and the ingest server. It is not a repair for a source that has disappeared from the scene or stopped playing.
Diagnose dropped frames and network interruptions
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. If the preview is intact, use the connection troubleshooting sequence:

- Check that OBS is using the intended YouTube server or ingest endpoint.
- Lower the stream bitrate to a level your stable upload capacity can sustain.
- Check whether security software or a VPN is interfering with the connection.
- Inspect the modem, router, and network hardware. If the route or connection appears outside your control, contact your internet service provider.
These are connection checks, not media-source fixes. A source that is blank in the OBS preview still needs to be repaired at the scene or playback layer.
Verify YouTube’s event, stream key, and start/stop behavior
YouTube Live Control Room provides the stream URL and key used by an encoder. If OBS cannot send to YouTube, make sure it is configured for the correct event and corresponding URL and key. YouTube describes a stream key as the encoder’s “password and address”; keep it private. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.

Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings if your workflow relies on restarting OBS. Do not assume the YouTube event remains live indefinitely after its encoder feed stops: YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Its scheduled-stream instructions also direct the operator to end the stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content. The result of a restart depends on the event settings and how the stream was started.

Plan continuity for a broadcast that cannot simply stop
YouTube recommends continuously monitoring streams for audio and video quality. For a supported redundant-encoder setup, its live streaming tips describe testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. Rehearse this before relying on it during a broadcast; it is not a feature every single-encoder OBS setup automatically has.
Choose the recovery around the failure: restart or restore the source for playback problems, reconnect or diagnose the network for ingest problems, and use a rehearsed backup encoder when the broadcast needs a tested failover path.
