YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served when no manual breaks are inserted. This does not turn off every kind of ad: pre-roll and display ads may still appear when monetization is on, and YouTube’s documentation does not say whether ad controls behave differently at the boundaries of a looped prerecorded stream.
What the mid-roll settings actually control
YouTube documents three live-stream mid-roll modes: Automatic, Scheduled, and Manual. They determine how creator-controlled mid-roll opportunities are handled; they are not a general switch for all advertising on a live stream.

These options concern mid-rolls. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically turned on when monetization is on for a live stream. Turning off or avoiding mid-rolls therefore does not guarantee an ad-free viewing experience. YouTube separately says ads are turned off for a live stream embedded on an external site with autoplay; that is a narrow embed condition, not a general setting for watching on YouTube. Set a stream to avoid creator-inserted mid-rolls
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Select the scheduled or active stream you want to manage.
- Open that stream’s edit and monetization settings. Find the live-stream ad or mid-roll controls.
- Select Manual. This gives you control over whether to insert creator-triggered mid-roll breaks.
- Do not insert any mid-roll breaks if your priority is to avoid them. YouTube’s stated rule is: “If you do not insert any mid-roll ad breaks, no mid-rolls will be served.”
If you want occasional breaks rather than none, keep Manual selected and insert them only at planned pauses. A break triggered at an inconvenient point can still interrupt the stream; manual control is about timing, not suppressing a break after you insert it. The controls described here are for live streams generally. YouTube’s help page does not specify a separate workflow for streams that continuously replay prerecorded material. If you keep automatic mid-rolls enabled
Use Delay ads as a temporary delay
In the Live Control Room, the Delay ads control delays automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. It can be useful before a moment when an interruption would be especially disruptive, but it is not a permanent off switch. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while Delay ads is on. If you need to prevent creator-inserted breaks, use Manual and do not insert them instead.
Know what automatic placement does—and does not promise
YouTube says automatic mid-rolls aim for natural breakpoints and offers low, medium, and high frequency settings. That is an aim, not a guarantee that an ad will land at a convenient moment or that every viewer will see the same timing. YouTube also says eligible streams can use side-by-side mid-rolls; streams with captions turned on will not show them. An eligible stream’s viewers may still have different ad experiences.

YouTube reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not turn them on. YouTube describes this as an average across 207 countries in January 2024, not an earnings forecast for any individual channel. Choosing Manual or Scheduled to reduce or control interruptions may involve the lower earnings potential YouTube associates with those settings. YouTube’s live-stream ad guidance
What viewers experience
YouTube does not guarantee that every viewer will receive a mid-roll. A viewer who does not receive one continues watching; a viewer who does receive one returns to the stream after the ad ends or they skip it. This describes mid-roll delivery, not whether a viewer will see a pre-roll, display ad, or another ad format. YouTube Help: ad experience during live streams

Loop boundaries and prerecorded material
The official live-stream ad guidance describes controls for live streams but does not explain whether those controls persist across loop boundaries or whether YouTube treats a continuously replayed recording differently. Do not assume that a loop restart resets, preserves, or changes the ad setting; the documented controls do not establish that behavior.
Keep the distinction clear: choosing Manual and inserting no breaks addresses creator-inserted mid-rolls. It does not establish that prerecorded content will be ad-free, nor does it disable pre-roll or display ads when monetization is on. The separate YouTube article about mid-rolls in eligible long-form videos, including its eight-minute video-length threshold, is about videos and should not be treated as a rule for a live stream made from looping content. Monetization scope and optional manual controls
To earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from long-form or live-stream videos on the Watch Page or embedded in the YouTube player, YouTube says creators need to accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. This is separate from choosing how live mid-rolls are handled. YouTube Help: Watch Page Monetization Module
YouTube identifies Elgato Stream Deck’s YouTube plugin as an option for inserting ads. It may help a creator trigger a break at a chosen time, but it does not stop ads or guarantee that an ad will serve. For a stream intended to avoid creator-inserted interruptions, adding a trigger device is unnecessary: Manual mode with no inserted breaks is the relevant control.
