Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To keep viewers watching an event after its YouTube live stream ends, make sure YouTube has an archive, then set that replay’s visibility for the audience you want. DVR only lets viewers pause or rewind during the live broadcast; it does not preserve the stream afterward.
Make sure YouTube archives the event
YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so YouTube recommends making a local recording as a backup if the event matters. The 12-hour threshold is YouTube’s current guidance, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be archived.
A local recording is a separate copy under your control; it does not automatically publish that copy to YouTube or repair playback of the channel archive. An external SSD is one optional place to store a local recording. Choose capacity based on your recording format and event length.
Find the replay and set its visibility
- After the broadcast, open YouTube Studio.
- Go to Content and select the Live tab.
- Open the event video’s details and check that the archive exists.
- Set Visibility to the audience you intend to reach, then save.
The archive can be deleted, so verify that it is still present as well as visible. YouTube replays and highlights appear as videos on the channel. Share the replay’s watch link with viewers, and use a playlist to organize it with related event recordings or highlight clips.

Understand what happens when the live stream ends
| Feature or workflow | When and where it works | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube archive and visibility | After the event, makes the recording available as a channel video to viewers permitted by its visibility setting. | Streams over 12 hours may not be captured; a hidden, restricted, or deleted archive may not be available to the intended viewers. |
| Local recording backup | Preserves a separate copy outside the YouTube channel. | Does not publish that copy or change playback of the YouTube archive. |
| DVR | During a live broadcast, lets viewers pause and rewind. | Does not preserve the ended stream. DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for broadcasts over 12 hours, and Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions have lower limits. |
| Live Redirect | At the end of a broadcast, can direct viewers to a Premiere or another live stream. | Does not keep the ended event’s own replay playing. |
If the replay is missing or will not play
- No archive appears: Check YouTube Studio under Content > Live. If the stream ran longer than 12 hours, YouTube says it may not have been captured. Use a local recording if you made one.
- Viewers cannot access the video: Open the video details, confirm Visibility is appropriate for the intended audience, and save any change.
- The replay was available and then disappeared: Check whether the archive was deleted. YouTube allows creators to delete it.
- Viewers expect to rewind after the event: Share the archive’s watch link. DVR is for the live broadcast, not a substitute for the replay video.
- You want viewers to continue to another program: Live Redirect can send them to a Premiere or another live stream, but it is an audience handoff rather than replay continuity.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded videos—not preserving the archive of a one-time event—StreamNeo keeps a channel live from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; StreamNeo can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots and 24/7 looping and playlists. The first day is free with no card; after that, the monthly option is $9.99 per month. You can review plans and pricing or start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
