How to Keep an FFmpeg Kids’ Livestream Running with systemd on Ubuntu

A practical Ubuntu systemd pattern for restarting FFmpeg after process failures, with protocol-specific reconnect guidance and clear limits on stream-health detection.

To restart FFmpeg automatically after it exits unexpectedly on Ubuntu, run it in the foreground as a systemd service and set Restart=on-failure with a deliberate delay. That helps recover from observed process failures; it does not guarantee that viewers are receiving a healthy stream. For network interruptions, use reconnect options that match the actual input protocol, and monitor the destination separately.

“Kids’ livestream” describes the audience, not the technical setup. The right FFmpeg command depends on your source, destination, codecs, and receiving platform. The examples below are templates, not a tested configuration for a particular host. Check the platform’s current ingest instructions before publishing.

What systemd can—and cannot—recover

FFmpeg reads from inputs, processes media, and writes outputs. Keep it in the foreground as the service’s main process so systemd can observe its exit status. FFmpeg options generally apply to the input or output that follows them, so their position in the command matters. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Recovery method What it can address Important limitation
FFmpeg protocol reconnect Supported connection failures for the particular input protocol, subject to configured retry behavior. Options differ by protocol and build; input reconnect does not necessarily detect a publishing failure downstream.
systemd Restart=on-failure An observed process failure, abnormal termination, or applicable timeout. If FFmpeg stays alive but stops delivering useful frames, systemd may have no failure to respond to. Start-rate limits can also stop repeated launches.
network-online.target ordering Delays service startup until the network manager’s configured online condition. It does not continuously monitor or restore connectivity after startup.
Health check or watchdog Could detect a process that is alive but unhealthy, if designed around a meaningful signal. You must define the health condition and failure action; a generic unit does not provide this automatically.

Ubuntu Jammy’s systemd.service manual recommends Restart=on-failure for long-running services. The cited Jammy page is for systemd 249.11-0ubuntu3.22. Restart attempts remain subject to systemd’s start-rate limiting.

Check the versions and the stream details first

Before adapting flags or paths, check the software installed on the machine. Online FFmpeg documentation is regenerated for the newest revision, so it may not match an older packaged build. The Ubuntu Jammy service manual cited above documents systemd 249.

  1. Check FFmpeg with ffmpeg -version.
  2. Check systemd with systemd --version.
  3. Check the local help and documentation for the input and output protocols you will use; confirm that the options you plan to use exist in your build.
  4. Record the actual input type, destination, codec requirements, and platform ingest settings. A camera, network stream, and local video file do not use the same input options.

Do not put a real stream key or source credential in a published command. Avoid exposing credentials in shell history or broadly readable files. Use a restricted service account and validate permissions and any host-specific security settings. The appropriate credential-storage and hardening choices depend on the host and FFmpeg’s required file, device, and network access.

Create a foreground FFmpeg systemd service

Write a schematic unit file

Create /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-livestream.service with a unit adapted to your host:

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg livestream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [options appropriate to this source and destination] -i [INPUT] [OUTPUT_OPTIONS] [OUTPUT]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5s

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

This is a template, not a ready-to-run command: replace every square-bracket placeholder, verify the FFmpeg path and service account, and put each option before the input or output it configures. RestartSec=5s is an illustrative delay, not a setting validated for every workload. Choose a delay that avoids a tight restart loop while fitting your recovery needs.

Wants=network-online.target and After=network-online.target express startup ordering against the network manager’s definition of readiness. They do not mean the internet will remain available. See the systemd documentation on network-online.

Load, enable, and inspect the service

  1. Save the unit file, then reload systemd’s unit definitions: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Enable the service at boot and start it now: sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-livestream.service.
  3. Inspect its current state and recent failure information: systemctl status ffmpeg-livestream.service.
  4. Follow its journal output while diagnosing startup or runtime issues: journalctl -u ffmpeg-livestream.service -f.

Confirm local paths, permissions, service-account access, and behavior before relying on unattended operation. The example unit is not validated for a particular Ubuntu host.

Match reconnect behavior to the input

FFmpeg’s reconnect options are protocol-specific. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes HTTP options for cases such as reconnecting on disconnect, end of file, or network errors, with retry counts and delay limits. Do not apply HTTP flags to RTSP or another protocol without checking that protocol’s documentation and local build.

For RTSP, FFmpeg documents transport choices including UDP, TCP interleaving, and HTTP or HTTPS tunneling. Select a transport only after checking compatibility with the actual source and network. A reconnect on the input side may restore reading while leaving a separate output or platform-ingest problem unresolved.

Looping a finite local file is a different case

If the source is a finite local media file that should repeat, FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinite looping. It is an input option, so place it in the input portion of the command before the relevant -i. This loops a file; it is not a reconnect option for a live camera or network source. See the FFmpeg CLI documentation.

Diagnose failures without assuming viewers see a healthy stream

  • The service fails immediately: inspect systemctl status and the unit journal. Check the FFmpeg executable path, substituted placeholders, option order, input availability, output settings, and the User= account’s permissions.
  • It starts, then repeatedly exits: review FFmpeg’s logged error and determine whether the input, output, credentials, or network caused the exit. Configure protocol-appropriate reconnect behavior where available and adjust RestartSec= deliberately.
  • Automatic starts stop after repeated failures: systemd’s StartLimitIntervalSec= and StartLimitBurst= settings constrain launch frequency. Review the effective unit and systemd documentation, correct the underlying cause, and then intervene or wait as appropriate for the configured limit.
  • The service is active but the stream is frozen or absent: an active FFmpeg process is not proof of useful frames reaching the destination. A suitable health check or watchdog must detect the failure condition and trigger an action; the signal and implementation depend on the source and destination.
  • The service starts before the network is usable: network-online ordering helps only if the network manager’s readiness condition is configured as expected. It does not recover a later outage; use protocol reconnects or a health strategy for subsequent failures.

For streams intended for children, separately check the destination platform’s current rules and ingest requirements, including any requirements relevant to the audience and jurisdiction. The technical setup alone does not establish that a stream’s content, moderation, or platform configuration is appropriate.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your source is an uploaded recording or playlist and your destination is YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. For an India-based channel, UPI is supported. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, so it is not a replacement for every FFmpeg source setup. Start the free first day.
