Run tmux on the VPS, start your verified FFmpeg command inside its session, then detach with Ctrl+b followed by d. The remote session—and FFmpeg, if it is still running—can survive your SSH client disconnecting. Reconnect later with tmux attach -t youtube to inspect it.
That solves a dropped terminal connection, not every kind of stream failure: tmux does not restart an exited FFmpeg process, bring back a shut-down VPS, or ensure YouTube is accepting valid media. The steps below show the interactive setup and explain when you need protocol reconnection or a service manager instead.
Start FFmpeg inside a tmux session on the VPS
Run these commands in an SSH connection to the VPS—not in a terminal on your local computer. Replace the example session name if you prefer. Start with a command you have already checked for your input, FFmpeg build, output protocol, and current YouTube ingest details; there is no single FFmpeg command that fits every source and configuration.

Connect to the VPS over SSH. If tmux is not installed, install it using the package manager for your VPS distribution.

Create a named session:
tmux new -s youtube -
Inside the tmux pane, start your verified FFmpeg command. Watch its output for connection errors and encoder or media-setting problems.

Detach by pressing Ctrl+b, releasing the keys, then pressing d. You should return to the VPS shell. You can now close the SSH client; the tmux session remains on the remote host while that host and its tmux server are running.

Reconnect and check what is actually running

SSH back into the same VPS account.

Reattach to the session:
tmux attach -t youtube -
Inspect the pane. If FFmpeg is still running, review its output rather than assuming that the stream is healthy. A running process does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving valid media.

If FFmpeg has exited, read its error output, correct the underlying problem, and start it again. If you need to keep the session for later inspection, detach again with Ctrl+b, then d.
If you have more than one tmux session, tmux ls lists the sessions available to your account. If youtube is not listed, the session may have ended or the VPS may have restarted; tmux cannot restore a session after its host has shut down.

Know which failure tmux can—and cannot—handle

Use FFmpeg reconnect options only for the relevant protocol
FFmpeg documents protocol-level options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, and reconnect_delay_total_max. Which options apply depends on the protocol and the direction of the connection. They are not a universal fix for output-side RTMP failures, and they cannot relaunch a process that has exited. Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build and the protocol you are using before adding options. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.
Reconnect behavior and process supervision solve different problems: protocol options may retry particular connection failures while FFmpeg remains alive; a supervisor can be configured to restart a process that exits. Neither makes an invalid stream key or unsupported media settings valid.

For a stream that should recover after FFmpeg exits or start after a VPS reboot, configure a service manager such as systemd rather than relying on tmux. A systemd service runs independently of an attached SSH terminal, but its restart policy and boot behavior depend on the unit configuration and how it is enabled on the target system. Set and verify those details for your distribution; do not assume that creating a unit alone guarantees the behavior you want. Read the systemd.service(5) manual.

tmux and systemd are not mutually exclusive. Use systemd to manage an unattended FFmpeg process, then inspect its status and logs through the service tools; tmux remains useful for interactive administration. For an interactive setup where you want to watch FFmpeg and reconnect to its terminal, tmux is the simpler fit.

Use the ingest details shown for the particular stream in YouTube Live Control Room. The YouTube Live API documents an ingestion address, but it points users to YouTube Help for recommended encoder settings; it does not establish one universal FFmpeg command for every input and FFmpeg build. See the YouTube LiveStreams API documentation.
Do not apply HLS requirements to a generic RTMP command. YouTube’s HLS guide describes a different ingest mode: it uses an HTTPS server URL and sends video in segments, which has higher latency than continuous RTMP. For HLS, YouTube specifies TS segments 1–4 seconds long, no byte-range mode, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. The guide lists H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio support for HLS. Apply these requirements only when HLS is actually selected, and check YouTube’s current guidance for your stream. Troubleshoot common problems

SSH disconnects and the stream stops. Confirm you created the tmux session on the VPS and started FFmpeg inside it. A process started in the ordinary SSH shell may end when the connection closes.

tmux attach -t youtubereports no matching session. Runtmux lsto see whether the session still exists. Check that you reconnected as the same VPS user and host. If the VPS rebooted, tmux cannot recover the old session. -
The session exists, but FFmpeg is gone. Reattach and inspect the pane for the exit error. tmux preserves the terminal; it does not restart FFmpeg. Address the reported input, network, output, or media issue before starting the command again.

FFmpeg remains running, but YouTube is not receiving the stream. Check the current stream key and ingest details, selected protocol, and media settings. A live process is not evidence that YouTube accepted its output.

A reconnect option has no effect. Confirm that the option is supported by your installed FFmpeg build and applies to the protocol and connection direction that failed. Protocol retries cannot revive a process that has already exited.
