Start FFmpeg inside a persistent terminal session on the remote host, then detach from that session before closing SSH. tmux is a strong default when you want to reconnect and inspect FFmpeg’s output; GNU Screen offers a similar workflow. For a one-way background launch, nohup can ignore hangup signals, but it does not give you the same interactive session to reattach to.
These methods protect a process from the SSH terminal closing. They do not keep the remote machine powered on, prevent FFmpeg from exiting, or automatically restore a broken connection to YouTube.
Keep FFmpeg running with tmux
A tmux session stays available when you detach from it, so you can close SSH and later reconnect to inspect the same session. Prepare a valid FFmpeg command for your input and YouTube stream first; the commands below show where to run it, not a tested media or encoder configuration.

At the tmux prompt, run your prepared FFmpeg command. Leave the session open while FFmpeg starts, and check for errors in its output.

Detach without stopping the session by pressing Ctrl-B, then D. You can now close the SSH connection.

The tmux manual describes a session as persistent through an accidental disconnection, such as an SSH timeout. That persistence is about the terminal session: it is not a guarantee that FFmpeg is still running or that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Use GNU Screen as an alternative
Screen also lets a program continue in a detached terminal session and gives you a way to resume that session later.

Reconnect over SSH and resume the session:
screen -r yt
GNU Screen’s manual says programs in its windows continue independently when the session is detached. It also documents automatic detach on hangup as enabled by default. As with tmux, Screen does not keep the host alive or make FFmpeg recover from every failure.
Use nohup for a one-way background launch
If you do not need to reattach to a live terminal session, nohup runs a command with hangup signals ignored. Redirect standard output and errors to a log, and standard input away from the terminal:
nohup ffmpeg [options] -i [input] [output] >ffmpeg.log 2>&1 < /dev/null &

Replace the bracketed placeholders with a valid FFmpeg command for your source and YouTube ingest settings. This example is a shell pattern, not a verified command for a particular file, codec, operating system, or stream key. The log file can contain useful error output, so do not put a real stream key in a command or log location that other people can read.
GNU Coreutils documents that nohup ignores hangup signals. If output is left attached to a terminal, it appends to nohup.out; if input is a terminal, it redirects it. The explicit redirections above make the log location and detached input clear. Unlike tmux or Screen, nohup does not provide an interactive session to reattach to and inspect.
Choose the method that matches your recovery needs

Configure and check the YouTube encoder connection
Keeping the process alive is only one part of keeping a live stream running. YouTube’s encoder workflow is to create or select a stream in Live Control Room, copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder, start the encoder, and check the preview and stream health.
- Use the correct ingest details. Enter the stream URL and key for the stream selected in Live Control Room. A running FFmpeg process cannot send to the intended broadcast if the ingest details are wrong.
- Follow current encoder settings guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS where available, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s current guidance for bitrate at your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than applying one guessed bitrate to every stream.
- Protect the stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as the password and address for the stream. Do not publish one, include it in a shared shell transcript, or put it in a broadly accessible log. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Test and monitor. Test before the event using audio and movement representative of the actual stream. While live, review YouTube’s stream-health messages; a detached session or background process alone does not establish that the stream is healthy.
Troubleshoot a stream that stops or appears offline
- SSH closed and the session ended: Check whether you detached from tmux with Ctrl-B, then D, or Screen with Ctrl-A, then D, before disconnecting. Reconnect and use
tmux lsorscreen -r ytto check for the session. - The session exists but FFmpeg is no longer running: Reattach and inspect its output, or check the log you selected for a nohup launch. Session persistence does not stop FFmpeg from exiting because of a command, input, or connection error.
- FFmpeg runs but YouTube does not show a healthy stream: Check that the stream URL and key match the selected Live Control Room stream, then review YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages. Confirm the encoder settings against current YouTube guidance.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Have an owner or manager reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Treat shell history and logs as potential exposure points if they contain the key.
- The remote host rebooted or the process failed: tmux, Screen, and nohup do not themselves restart FFmpeg after those events. A process supervisor may be appropriate when restart behavior is required, but its configuration must be chosen and verified for the particular host.
