To keep a YouTube stream from ending between playlist videos, make the playlist one continuous FFmpeg input and keep the output process running as FFmpeg moves from one file to the next. For compatible files, the concat demuxer can read them in sequence without re-encoding. It cannot fix mismatched streams or guarantee a gap-free transition: check codecs, time bases, durations, and YouTube’s ingest status when a boundary fails.
Why the stream may stop at a playlist boundary
A playlist of separate files is not automatically a continuous live input. FFmpeg must transition from one file’s packets and timestamps to the next while its output remains connected to YouTube. A problem can come from incompatible source streams, incorrect duration information, an FFmpeg process that exits at end-of-file, or an ingest/configuration issue.
The concat demuxer presents a fixed list of files as one sequential input, but it does not repair incompatible media. FFmpeg’s documentation says: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” [FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation]
Prepare and check the playlist files
1. Create a concat list in playback order
Make a plain-text file such as playlist.txt, with one file directive per media file:

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
file '/path/to/video-1.mp4'
file '/path/to/video-2.mp4'
file '/path/to/video-3.mp4'
Use paths valid on the computer running FFmpeg. Quote paths with spaces or special characters using the concat demuxer’s syntax; do not assume ordinary shell quoting rules automatically apply inside the list file. Keep the entries in the order you want them played. The demuxer syntax and escaping rules are documented by the FFmpeg Project.

2. Confirm the files have compatible streams
Before relying on packet concatenation, inspect each file with ffprobe or another media-inspection tool. Compare the streams, including their codec, time base, and stream layout. The demuxer expects matching streams; a difference can make the transition fail or produce invalid output. Do not treat a playlist that merely contains files with the same extension as necessarily compatible.
3. Check durations and timestamps
The concat demuxer uses each file’s duration to calculate where the next file begins. If a duration is missing or inaccurate, timestamps at the boundary can be wrong; files whose stream lengths differ can also introduce gaps. Check the reported durations and playback timestamps when the transition is delayed, skipped, or otherwise damaged. An explicit duration directive in the concat list can override inaccurate or unavailable duration metadata, but use it only when you know the correct duration for that entry. See the concat demuxer documentation.

Choose the concatenation method that fits the media
| Method | Use it when | What it does and its limits |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | The files have matching streams and compatible codec and time-base properties. | Reads packets from the listed files as one sequential input and can avoid re-encoding. It does not normalize incompatible files or guarantee a seamless boundary. |
| Concat filter | The inputs need re-encoding or normalization to produce a consistent output. | Combines media in the filter graph while encoding. FFmpeg’s FAQ identifies the concat filter as the recommended route when re-encoding is needed. It requires an encoding workflow rather than simply joining compatible packets. |
FFmpeg’s joining-files FAQ explains the concat options. Choose based on the actual input streams, not just on which command appears shorter.
Keep the live output active through the transition
- Start FFmpeg with the playlist as its input. Configure the concat demuxer and the output for your existing YouTube ingest setup. The exact complete command depends on the FFmpeg build, file properties, output container and codecs, and ingest protocol; without those details, one command cannot be presented as universally reliable.
- Keep the FFmpeg process running for the whole list. A single-file input naturally reaches end-of-file. With a concat input, FFmpeg should advance through the listed files while continuing to produce the live output. Check the process and its logs at the boundary rather than assuming the playlist advanced successfully.
- Check YouTube’s stream status and health. If FFmpeg is still running, distinguish a media transition problem from a loss of incoming data or an ingest configuration error. YouTube’s API documents stream statuses including active (receiving data), inactive (not receiving data), and error, along with health information that can help identify configuration problems: YouTube Live Streams API.
Check the YouTube ingest protocol
YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS, HLS, and DASH as ingestion protocols. Confirm which one your encoder is configured to use and whether FFmpeg’s output format and codecs fit that protocol. Switching protocols without evidence of a protocol-specific problem is not a general fix for a playlist transition.

If the configured protocol is HLS, its requirements are specific to HLS: YouTube documents MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT uploads. HLS is segmented and has higher latency than continuous RTMP, according to YouTube Help on live encoder settings and ingest. Do not apply HLS segment settings to an RTMP stream.

| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits after the first file | Whether the input is actually the concat list and whether FFmpeg reports a parsing or file-open error. | Correct the list path, directive syntax, or media paths, then verify FFmpeg proceeds to the next entry. |
| FFmpeg continues, but YouTube stops receiving data | FFmpeg’s output logs and YouTube’s stream status. | Determine whether output ceased at the file boundary or whether the ingest connection or configuration failed. Use YouTube’s status and health fields to narrow it down. |
| Video or audio glitches at the boundary | Stream layout, codecs, time bases, durations, and timestamps for both files. | Correct duration information where appropriate; if streams are incompatible or need normalization, use a re-encoding workflow with the concat filter. |
| The playlist works with RTMP but not HLS, or the reverse | The selected protocol and its required output format and upload behavior. | Follow the requirements for the protocol you actually use. In particular, apply YouTube’s segment and rolling-playlist requirements only to HLS. |
