Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To keep an OBS radio stream playing after its media ends, enable Loop for a single file or Loop Playlist for a list of files. This repeats the audio; it does not automatically end the YouTube livestream. For playlists, use OBS’s VLC Video Source and make sure VLC is installed.
Choose the right OBS source
| What you want to play | OBS source | Setting | Dependency or caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| One audio or video file | Media Source | Loop | Loop is off by default. |
| Several files in a playlist | VLC Video Source | Loop Playlist | Requires VLC. Visibility behavior can pause or stop playback when the source is hidden. |
OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide. The Sources Guide explains how sources are added to scenes.
Loop a single file
- In OBS, select the scene where the radio audio should play.
- In the Sources panel, click the plus button and add a Media Source. Choose an existing source or create a new one.
- Open the Media Source properties, select the local media file, and enable Loop.
- Confirm the source is visible in the active scene, then start or resume playback to check that it begins again when it reaches the end.
Loop a playlist of files
- Install VLC Media Player if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video Source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In the scene where the playlist should play, click the plus button in the Sources panel and add VLC Video Source.
- In the source properties, add the files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Make sure Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents this setting as on by default; it restarts the source after it runs out of media files.
- Check the source’s Visibility Behaviour setting. Choose the behavior you need if the source becomes hidden: the setting controls whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while it is not visible.
- Keep the source visible in the active scene while the radio stream is running, unless its visibility behavior is deliberately configured for hidden playback.
OBS’s source documentation lists the playlist loop control as “Loop Playlist” and describes it as restarting the source when it runs out of media files.
Playlist looping does not end the livestream
Looping controls playback of the media source. It is a separate action from ending the broadcast. A dated response by OBS forum moderator FerretBomb says there is no built-in way to automatically end a stream when a playlist finishes; treat that as a community forum answer, not an official product specification. If your goal is to keep a radio stream live, enable looping. If your goal is to stop streaming at a particular time, end the broadcast separately rather than relying on the playlist to do it.

For an alternative playlist source, a third-party community listing describes a plugin called Media Playlist Source, including editing and shuffle features. Its compatibility and limitations can vary by version, so check its current documentation before installing it; the built-in VLC Video Source is sufficient for the basic loop setup.
Troubleshoot a playlist that still stops
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Only one file repeats, or the playlist ends: Confirm you added a VLC Video Source for multiple files and that Loop Playlist is enabled. A Media Source’s Loop setting repeats its single file, not a multi-file playlist.
- Playback stops after changing scenes: Check whether the source becomes hidden in the new scene and inspect its Visibility Behaviour setting.
- Playback pauses or stops when the source is hidden: Set the VLC source’s visibility behavior to match whether playback should continue, pause, or stop while hidden.
- The audio plays but the livestream ends: Source looping does not control the broadcast’s end state. Check the livestream separately; OBS documents the loop setting as restarting media playback, not ending or maintaining the broadcast.
