If audio stops when you lock your phone or leave the app, that is a separate issue: background play is an eligibility-based feature in YouTube’s supported mobile apps. For continuous music, try YouTube Music stations or shuffled mixes.
First, identify what stopped
“Keep YouTube playing” can mean two different things:
- Start another video after this one: Use Autoplay for YouTube’s next-video selection, or use a queue or playlist when you want more control over what comes next.
- Keep the current audio going in the background: Check background play eligibility and settings in the mobile app. Autoplay does not, by itself, make audio continue after you leave the app or lock your phone.
There is no single documented setting that guarantees every video-to-video transition on every phone, TV, computer, or cast session.
Make another video play when one ends
Check Autoplay on the device you are using
- Open YouTube on the device where playback stops.
- Find the Autoplay control in the player or playback controls and make sure it is enabled.
- Play a video and see whether another video starts at the end.
- If it still stops, check Autoplay on that device rather than assuming a setting on another device applies. YouTube’s help material notes that settings can differ across devices; behavior can also vary by device and casting context.
Autoplay is the simplest choice when you are comfortable with YouTube selecting the next video. It is not a promise that the same next video will be selected on every device or session.

Use a queue or playlist for a chosen sequence
If you want particular videos to follow one another, queue them or play a playlist instead of relying on recommendations. YouTube documents manual queueing on mobile and tablets for Premium members. On Android, recommended videos can also be added to a queue. Availability and exact controls can depend on account and app context.
A queue is useful for a short session when you want to choose what comes next. A playlist is the more natural option for a sequence you plan to play again.

Keep audio playing with the screen locked or app in the background
This is background play, not Autoplay. YouTube documents background play in the YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids mobile apps when available, for users signed in with an eligible Premium account. Availability depends on the app, account, and location.
Check the Background play setting
- In the supported YouTube mobile app, open the Background play setting.
- Choose the behavior you want: Always on, Off, or playback only with Headphones or external speakers.
- If you chose the headphones/external-speakers option, connect that audio output. With that setting, background playback is conditional on an attached output.
- Confirm that you are signed in to an eligible Premium account and that the feature is available for your app and location.
Background play keeps the current audio going when you leave the app or lock the phone; it does not control which video starts next. Conversely, headphones or external speakers can satisfy the output condition for background play, but they do not enable Autoplay or guarantee that another video starts.

India: Premium Lite availability
On 12 March 2026, Google announced that background play and downloads were rolling out for most videos to Premium Lite subscribers in India. Google distinguished music content and YouTube Music Premium as reasons to choose full Premium. The announcement describes a geographically specific rollout, not a universal Premium Lite benefit; if you are in India, check current local plan details and availability before relying on it. Outside India, check the benefits offered for your own location.
For continuous music, try YouTube Music
If the goal is music rather than an arbitrary chain of videos, YouTube Music’s continuous radio stations and shuffled personalized mixes are purpose-built options. Google described these formats in a 2021 announcement; that does not guarantee every current interface, market, or listening context will behave identically.

Choose a station or mix for ongoing music discovery, a playlist for a sequence you select, or Autoplay when you want YouTube to choose a next video. Background play remains a separate question if you want listening to continue after leaving the mobile app.

A video ends and nothing follows
- Check Autoplay on the same device where playback stops.
- For a known sequence, try a queue or playlist instead of recommendations.
- If you are watching on a TV or casting, check the controls in that viewing context; do not assume phone settings guarantee identical cast behavior.
Audio stops when you lock the phone or leave YouTube
- Check whether you are signed in with an eligible Premium account and whether background play is available in your location and app.
- Review the app’s Background play choice. If it is set to headphones or external speakers, attach an output device or choose another available setting.
- For India Premium Lite, verify current local availability and remember Google’s March 2026 announcement specified most videos, with music benefits distinguished from full Premium.
Music should continue, but the next video is unrelated
Use a YouTube Music station or shuffled mix for music-oriented continuity, or build a queue or playlist when you want to select the sequence yourself. Autoplay is recommendation-led, not a fixed playlist.
