How to Keep FFmpeg Streaming to YouTube After an OVHcloud VPS Reboot

Configure systemd to start FFmpeg at boot and recover the process after failure, then check whether YouTube has resumed the feed and event.

Put FFmpeg under a boot-enabled systemd service instead of starting it in an SSH session. Configure the service to restart after a process failure, then verify the VPS, FFmpeg, and YouTube stream separately after a reboot. This can restart the encoder; it does not guarantee that YouTube will keep the same live event running or that viewers will see no interruption.

Why an SSH-launched FFmpeg process stops after a reboot

Starting FFmpeg from an interactive SSH shell does not configure it to start again when Linux boots. A reboot ends the process, and an SSH session is not a process supervisor. OVHcloud’s systemd service guide makes this distinction in its example: work launched only in an SSH session stops when the VPS reboots. The durable change is to define a service that starts at boot and has a restart policy.

Configure a systemd service for your FFmpeg command

Create a service unit for the FFmpeg command you already use, adapting the general pattern in OVHcloud’s guide rather than copying its example command, which is for a different application. The unit should specify the executable and arguments, an appropriate service user, a working directory if your command relies on relative paths, ordering after network availability, a restart policy, and an install target for boot enablement.

  • Use the right identity and paths: run the service as a suitable non-root user where practical, and make sure that user can read the input media and any configuration files.
  • Account for network startup: order the service after the network target as appropriate for your system. This does not guarantee that the VPS has working internet access or that YouTube is reachable when FFmpeg starts.
  • Choose a restart policy deliberately: OVHcloud’s example uses Restart=on-failure to restart a process that exits unsuccessfully. A restart policy can recover a failed process, but it cannot correct invalid settings, missing files, or an unavailable host.
  • Enable the service at boot: use the service manager’s enablement mechanism so the unit is started on future boots; starting a service once is not the same as configuring boot startup.

The exact unit syntax and commands depend on your Linux distribution and the FFmpeg command you intend to run. No FFmpeg-specific reconnect options or command-line example are established here, so verify any such flags, quoting, option order, and behavior against documentation for your installed FFmpeg version before adding them.

Keep the YouTube ingest URL and stream key valid

YouTube’s encoder setup instructions tell creators to copy the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into their encoder. Make sure the service’s configuration uses the current values. If you reset the key in YouTube, update the server configuration too; the stream settings guidance covers managing stream settings and keys.

  • Keep the key in a protected configuration file or another appropriate secret-handling method, with access limited to the service and administrators who need it.
  • Do not include a real stream key in public examples, support posts, or logs that others can read.
  • Check that the service user can read the configuration and that the input media path remains valid after a reboot.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bandwidth

A boot-enabled service only addresses process startup. Separately confirm that FFmpeg is configured for YouTube’s accepted ingest and the quality you intend to stream. YouTube’s encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS, supported video codec options including H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 in relevant configurations, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on your source and the current YouTube settings table rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream.

YouTube recommends that total streaming bitrate fit the available outbound upload bandwidth and that you leave 20% headroom. Its live encoder guidance also advises testing with representative audio and movement, checking the preview and stream health, and monitoring the stream. For a primary-and-backup encoder design, plan for the bandwidth needed by both encoders and test the actual failover behavior.

Reboot and verify each layer

  1. Plan a test: choose a time when an interruption will not disrupt an important broadcast. YouTube recommends preparing at least two hours before a live stream and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event; treat these as operational recommendations.
  2. Reboot the VPS: use the OVHcloud control panel’s instance controls for a planned reboot. OVHcloud’s instance management guidance describes instance status, reboot controls, and console access.
  3. Confirm the host is available: check that the instance returns to a running or enabled state and that you can reach it. If normal remote access fails, use the provider console to distinguish a VM boot issue from an encoder issue.
  4. Inspect the service on the guest: check its status and logs through your distribution’s systemd tools. Confirm FFmpeg is running, the service is not repeatedly restarting, and the configured input and credentials are accessible.
  5. Verify YouTube’s side: open Live Control Room and confirm the encoder preview and stream health return. Also check the viewer-facing watch page. A running process alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a valid feed or that the original event is still live.

What systemd recovery does—and does not—cover

Approach What it addresses What it does not establish
Boot-enabled systemd service with a restart policy Starting the FFmpeg process after guest boot and restarting it after process failure, following the general service pattern in OVHcloud’s systemd guide. That the VM boots, the network reaches YouTube, credentials remain valid, or the same YouTube event stays live.
Primary and backup encoder failover A separate encoder can provide another feed path. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet and checking whether playback rolls to the backup. It does not replace boot-time process supervision on the VPS. Capacity, stream configuration, and actual player rollover need to be planned and tested.

Systemd restart is process recovery, not high availability. It cannot restart a failed VPS, repair a network outage, or guarantee YouTube event continuity. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes testing primary/backup behavior; test your own configuration rather than assuming viewers will roll over seamlessly.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not return

The OVHcloud instance is not available

Check the instance state in the OVHcloud control panel and use its console or recovery controls to determine whether the guest booted. OVHcloud documents soft and hard reboot controls as well as console access in its instance management guidance. Resolve a VM or access problem before treating it as an FFmpeg fault.

The service is inactive or repeatedly restarting

Inspect the service status and journal logs. Check the FFmpeg executable path, unit arguments, permissions, working directory, input path, and environment. These are diagnostic targets suggested by the service configuration; OVHcloud’s cited guide describes the general unit pattern, not FFmpeg-specific troubleshooting.

FFmpeg is running but YouTube receives no feed

Verify the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, including whether a reset key was propagated to the service. Then check outbound connectivity and encoder health. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance advises checking or replacing an invalid key, using a current encoder, looking for CPU load or errors, and testing outbound connectivity.

The feed returns, but quality is poor

Compare the configured bitrate with actual outbound capacity and YouTube’s recommendations for your resolution and frame rate. Leave the recommended 20% upload headroom, then monitor stream health and quality rather than assuming a successful connection means the settings are adequate.

The original YouTube event ended

Do not assume restarting FFmpeg reopens the event. Check Live Control Room to see whether that event is still accepting an encoder feed or whether you need to start a scheduled stream or create a new one. The encoder setup and stream settings pages explain setup and configuration, but do not establish a guarantee of event continuity after a VPS reboot.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded video rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the loop running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. Each slot streams uploaded video as provided, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will systemd make the same YouTube live event continue after a reboot?

No. It can restart the FFmpeg process, but you must verify in Live Control Room whether the event is still accepting the encoder feed.

Does this setup require FFmpeg reconnect flags?

The appropriate reconnect options depend on your FFmpeg version and command. Verify them against documentation for the installed build rather than adding unverified flags.
