To keep gameplay audio consistent across YouTube reruns, preserve separate game and commentary tracks when possible, balance the voice for clarity during both quiet and loud moments, and compare the same kinds of passages across each export. Measure loudness and peaks separately, check the mix in stereo and mono, then listen to the processed YouTube upload—not just the local file.
YouTube does not specify an integrated loudness or true-peak target for gaming reruns. Treat any meter values as production choices, not platform requirements.
Build a repeatable mix before comparing reruns
Keep sources adjustable
If your recording setup allows it, record or export commentary and game audio on separate tracks. Set their capture gains consistently from one rerun to the next; change them only when the microphone, game feed, room, or capture chain has changed. Separate tracks let you correct the mix without having to redo the entire recording.
Choose reference moments
For each rerun, mark comparable moments that cover different listening conditions:

- A loud effect, music passage, or other intense game moment.
- A moment when commentary overlaps busy game audio.
Compare like with like. A quiet pause in one video is not a useful loudness reference for an action sequence in another.
Balance commentary against game sound
Make speech intelligible first
Set the voice so viewers can follow it through both calm and intense gameplay without needing to turn the game down themselves. If effects or music mask the words, reduce those elements around the commentary rather than simply making the whole mix louder.

Control voice variation gently
If the commentary level varies substantially, use modest compression or volume automation. Listen for pumping: overly strong compression can make background game sound rise and fall unnaturally as the voice changes. Recheck the reference moments after making adjustments.
Measure loudness and peaks as separate checks
A peak reading does not tell you how loud a passage will seem overall. Use a loudness meter to compare equivalent passages between reruns, and a true-peak meter or limiter to catch overloads. The European Broadcasting Union’s R 128 guidance separates loudness normalization from peak normalization and discusses true-peak limiting for streaming. It is a useful production framework, not a YouTube rule for gaming reruns.

Do not treat a particular integrated loudness or true-peak number as a YouTube requirement: the official guidance cited here does not establish one for this content. Pick targets appropriate to your own distribution needs and use them consistently.
Compare each export on five dimensions

Listen in stereo, then check mono
Listen to the full export on stereo headphones or speakers, paying particular attention to the reference moments. Then check it in mono. A stereo mix can lose quality or become partly muted when a device converts it to mono if the channels are poorly phase-aligned. Compare the uploaded video with your local export after YouTube has processed it. YouTube may apply audio enhancements such as volume balancing or voice boost, and viewers may also have playback controls. Its guidance describes Stable volume as balancing quiet and loud ranges by continuously adjusting levels to reduce variation. For the channel’s default enhancement setting for future uploads, see YouTube’s video and audio quality enhancement settings; for viewer controls, see YouTube’s volume controls. These playback behaviors are another reason to check the actual upload as well as your export.

Keep export settings separate from mix decisions
YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings list AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio; a 48 kHz sample rate; and a recommended stereo audio bitrate of 384 kbps. Those are encoding recommendations, not a target for the balance between commentary and game sound. Check the current details on YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Save a template and troubleshoot changes
Preserve what works
Once a rerun passes the listening and meter checks, save the source gains, processing chain, and export settings as a template or documented preset. Revisit them when the game, microphone, room, or capture setup changes; otherwise, avoid unexplained gain changes between reruns.
Common problems and fixes
- Commentary disappears during action: Reduce masking game effects or music, then adjust voice level or gentle automation and recheck the overlap reference moment.
- Voice level changes sharply: Check capture gain consistency and use restrained compression or automation; listen for pumping after each change.
- Effects sound harsh or overloaded: Check true peaks and provide more headroom or use peak control rather than relying on an overall loudness adjustment.
- Audio thins out or vanishes in mono: Inspect stereo processing and phase relationships, then retest the mono fold-down.
- The upload differs from the local export: Compare playback after processing and account for YouTube enhancements and the viewer’s playback settings.
