Agree on one shared place to talk or play, save any group details you may need, and check the game’s official shutdown notice: the game, its friend list, and its community channels can each have different deadlines.
What to do before the game shuts down
- Ask directly. Send a brief message in-game or through a group chat: “Would you like to stay in touch after the servers close?” People may decline or not respond, and that is their choice.
- Exchange an outside contact method. If both of you agree, connect through a service you can use without the game. A University of Georgia dissertation on online gaming communities includes a participant discussing adding people on Discord in the context of a game shutdown; this is a qualitative example, not evidence that everyone uses or prefers Discord. Read the dissertation.
- Choose a shared place to talk. Decide whether a small private chat, a larger community, or another space suits the group. Check that everyone can access it and that its text, voice, and event tools fit what you want to do. Consider account and privacy settings, and whether you want a persistent community or just a way to message a few friends.
- Save useful group details. Keep the contact names, invite information, and event or group details you may need somewhere you can reach after the game closes. Only save or share information people have agreed to provide.
- Check the official notice for dates and exceptions. Read the publisher’s current announcement for your game, platform, and region. Note when servers close, whether a migration is offered, and whether the notice gives separate dates for forums, Discord, or other community spaces.
Will the game’s Discord or community stay open?
Sometimes, but an open community channel may be quiet, view-only, or gradually less supported. Check the shutdown announcement for the channel’s status rather than assuming that it will close with the game—or remain active indefinitely.
Squad Busters
In its FAQ, Supercell said it did not plan to officially shut down Squad Busters community channels anytime soon and wanted to leave them open while the game remained playable. That was the company’s stated plan at the time of the FAQ, not a promise of indefinite availability. Read Supercell’s Squad Busters FAQ.
Warface: Clutch
Warface: Clutch’s shutdown notice described different outcomes for the game and its official Discord: the game would stop functioning after its servers closed, while the Discord would remain accessible for viewing, stop receiving active updates, and gradually lose moderation. A visible server, in other words, does not necessarily mean an active or supported community. Read the Warface: Clutch notice.

Will a game migration keep your friend list?
Do not assume that moving to another launcher or platform will transfer your contacts. Look for an explicit answer in the game’s official migration instructions, and distinguish friend-list continuity from access to the game itself.
For one title-specific example, Bethesda’s Fallout 76 launcher FAQ said players moving to Steam would retain their friend list because the Steam migration used the same Bethesda.net friend system. That does not establish how another game handles migration. Read Bethesda’s Fallout 76 launcher FAQ.

Make the next step easy—and optional
If friends are interested, suggest one low-pressure next step: a regular chat, a session in another game, or a shared activity outside gaming. You could offer a specific time or a couple of choices, then let people decide what works. There is no need for everyone to move to the same game or stay equally active; different interests and schedules are normal.
