To keep a lecture stream running in OBS, prevent the computer from entering system sleep while it is plugged in. You can still let the display turn off: screen-off and computer-sleep timers are separate settings. On Windows 11, adjust the plugged-in sleep timeout in Settings; on a Mac, enable Apple’s option to prevent automatic sleep when the display is off. OBS’s sleep-inhibition behavior is not a substitute for checking your operating system’s settings or testing the full setup.
First, distinguish a dark screen from a sleeping computer
Turning off the display does not necessarily stop OBS. System sleep is the setting that can suspend the computer and interrupt encoding or streaming. If you do not need to watch the machine during the lecture, let the screen turn off but configure the computer to stay awake while it is plugged in.
Keep the computer connected to power for an unattended stream. Disabling automatic sleep can increase energy use, and sleep settings alone do not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: a crash, restart, overheating, network or YouTube ingest interruption, power loss, or lid-close behavior can still stop it.
Keep a Windows 11 computer awake
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Find the separate controls for turning off the screen and putting the device to sleep. Set the plugged-in device-sleep timeout so Windows will not sleep during the lecture. If the event is longer than the available timeout choices, select the option that keeps the device awake, if offered.
- Set the plugged-in screen-off timeout independently. Choose a longer time if you need to monitor the display, or let it turn off if you do not.
- Confirm the computer is actually using its plugged-in power state, then run a test stream and check that OBS remains live after the display turns off.
Windows can honor system-required requests that prevent automatic sleep. OBS community discussions mention powercfg -requests and request overrides, but these are community suggestions, not endorsed instructions from Microsoft or OBS. Start with the built-in timeout controls; avoid applying an override unless you understand how it changes sleep behavior and have a specific reason to do so.

Keep a Mac awake while its display is off
- Connect the Mac to a power adapter.
- Open System Settings and check the Lock Screen and Battery settings for your installed macOS version.
- Enable Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off.
- Set the display to turn off on the schedule you want, then test that OBS continues streaming with the display dark.
Apple documents this option for preventing automatic sleep while on adapter power even when the display is off. Menu locations and labels can vary by macOS version, so search the current settings if the wording differs. Apple cautions that delaying or preventing sleep may increase power consumption.
Linux: use your distribution’s power settings
Linux power controls depend on the distribution and desktop environment, so there is no single menu path that applies universally. Check your distribution’s current power-management settings for separate display and system-sleep behavior, and configure the plugged-in system not to sleep during the stream. OBS’s system requirements information does not document how to change Linux sleep settings; verify the exact steps for your installed environment.

Starting OBS automatically is not the same as keeping it awake
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter for starting a stream as part of a prepared workflow. Its launch guide covers setting up launch parameters on Windows and macOS. This parameter can start streaming; it is not a keep-awake switch and does not promise to recover from a crash, network interruption, operating-system restart, or power failure.
OBS also has developer-level sleep-inhibition functions: os_inhibit_sleep_create creates an inhibition object, and os_inhibit_sleep_set_active activates or deactivates it. Their presence in the code/API does not establish a universal user-facing toggle or identical behavior on every operating system and version. An OBS community forum discussion explains that OBS continues rendering while open and may prevent Windows from sleeping; treat that as community guidance, not a formal guarantee.

Test the whole lecture-stream setup
The OBS Quick Start Guide says: “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.” For an event intended to run continuously, use a longer practical check of your own full setup as well; that is a sensible precaution, not an OBS-prescribed test duration.
- Start OBS and confirm the intended scene, audio, and stream are working.
- Let the screen turn off using the chosen operating-system setting. Check from another device that the YouTube stream is still live and playing.
- Keep the test running long enough to observe whether the computer sleeps, disconnects, or otherwise interrupts the stream.
- Check OBS’s system requirements against your computer, scene complexity, output resolution, frame rate, and encoding choice. OBS notes that meeting minimum compatibility requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording performance.
Troubleshoot a stream that stops when unattended
