OBS does not automatically match the loudness of every video in a VLC playlist. To make a YouTube stream or recording sound more consistent, compare the playlist items, adjust the OBS audio signal carefully, and avoid clipping. YouTube’s Stable volume is separate: it may reduce loudness variation during playback, but it does not change the audio OBS sends.
What OBS can—and cannot—do with playlist volume
OBS can play a playlist through a VLC Video source. Its documented source settings include playback options such as looping and shuffling, but do not promise automatic loudness normalization from one playlist item to the next. Setting one level for the source affects its output; it does not ensure that quiet and loud files will match.
That distinction matters whether you are livestreaming gameplay or recording a video to upload later: the audio OBS sends is shaped by the files and OBS controls, while YouTube’s playback features act on the viewer’s side.
Set up and level the playlist in OBS
- Add the playlist source. In a scene, add a VLC Video source and select or configure the playlist in its properties. VLC must be installed for the source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Check the source’s audio track and playback options. In the source properties, review the playlist and playback settings, including loop or shuffle if needed. Do not assume these options normalize the audio.
- Watch the OBS Audio Mixer while each item plays. Compare the meter behavior and listen to the actual output. Check more than the opening seconds: a file may change in loudness later, and music, dialogue, and effects can be perceived differently even when their peaks look similar.
- Adjust the source level and filters cautiously. OBS lets you add audio filters to sources and scenes. Use them to shape the outgoing signal, then listen again across the playlist. Raising the entire source to fix a quiet item can make louder items clip.
- Monitor the signal OBS sends. Listen through OBS audio monitoring as well as at the local playback device. The signal heard at the source may not reflect exactly what reaches the stream or recording after OBS processing.
- Repeat the check after changes. Test every playlist item at least once with the same scene, filters, and output settings you plan to use. Adjust levels based on both perceived loudness and meter readings.
For closer matching, prepare the files consistently
If a playlist contains files with very different loudness, the more reliable approach is to compare and prepare their audio before loading them into OBS. Use a consistent offline audio workflow to bring items closer together, then audition the processed files in sequence and check that peaks remain safe. You can also tune OBS processing on the playlist source, but source-level processing alone is not a guarantee of per-file matching.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS’s documentation does not specify a cross-file loudness target or a guaranteed automatic normalization method for VLC playlists. Choose a target appropriate to the material and your delivery needs rather than treating peak level as a complete measure of perceived loudness.
Prevent clipping while you balance levels
OBS identifies 0 dBFS as the digital full-scale limit: output at or above that level can clip and sound distorted. Keep the final OBS output below 0 dBFS. The meter is useful, but listening matters too; do not raise every item until the loudest one hits the limit just to make quiet items appear louder.

What YouTube Stable volume changes
YouTube’s Stable volume is a viewer-side playback feature, not an OBS setting. YouTube says it is on by default when watching videos and continuously balances quiet and loud portions to reduce sound variation. Viewers can toggle it in the player settings where it is available.
Stable volume is not available for every video, and YouTube says it is disabled for YouTube Music and official music videos. It may help a viewer hear less variation, but it does not normalize the playlist inside OBS or alter the audio OBS sends into a livestream or recording.

YouTube Studio audio enhancements for uploads
YouTube also provides creator controls for audio-enhancement defaults for future uploads in YouTube Studio on a computer. Those settings do not affect videos that are already uploaded, and viewer settings can take precedence. They are separate from the OBS controls used to mix a livestream or make a local recording.
Troubleshoot uneven playlist audio
- A playlist item is much quieter than the others: Compare the item’s full playback in OBS monitoring. Adjust that file in an offline workflow or carefully tune processing; raising the whole source may make louder items clip.
- The meter looks similar, but one item sounds louder: Peak readings do not fully describe perceived loudness. Listen to the complete items and compare dialogue, music, and effects.
- Audio distorts on loud sections: Check the final OBS output level and keep it below 0 dBFS. Reduce the source level or revise processing rather than pushing the signal higher.
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC, matching OBS’s architecture. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- The YouTube viewer still hears level changes: OBS’s output is not automatically matched across playlist entries. Stable volume may reduce variation during playback when available, but it is a viewer-side feature and can be toggled.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than an OBS audio-mixing workflow, StreamNeo plays uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is a cloud option for keeping uploaded video live on YouTube, not a substitute for balancing loudness between playlist files. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
