What happens when a game leaves Game Pass?
Your access to a Game Pass catalog game ends when it leaves the library, even if you downloaded it. Xbox says access continues until your subscription expires or is canceled, or the game leaves the library. Xbox’s Game Pass page describes the service’s access terms.
How to keep playing it

Check the departure announcement. Xbox Wire publishes lists of games leaving the service, and Xbox says members can also receive mobile notifications. No universal amount of advance notice is established, so check announcements regularly. Xbox Wire’s guidance says members can move an exiting game up their play queue or use a member discount to buy it before it leaves.

Open the game’s store listing for your platform. Confirm that it is the same game and edition you play, and check the current price and whether it is available to buy. Do not assume a purchase for Xbox console also grants access to the Windows PC version, or vice versa.

Buy the game if you want continued access. Xbox Wire recommends purchasing the exiting title before removal, when it may be offered with a member discount. The cited guidance does not establish a current discount percentage or guarantee that a game remains for sale after it leaves; rely on the listing shown for that game.

Check the game’s support information for progress and add-ons. Save transfer and DLC behavior depend on the particular game. Purchasing add-ons alone is not a substitute for owning the base game: Dovetail Games says this for its titles, but that statement should not be generalized to every publisher’s licensing terms. What to verify before you buy
- Platform: Check whether the listing is for Xbox console or Windows PC and whether it matches where you play.
- Edition: Make sure the listed edition is the one you intend to keep playing; do not assume another edition or platform is included.
- Price and availability: Compare the current listing and any discount displayed on your account. There is no verified universal member-discount amount.
- Physical copies: A disc is an option only if that specific game has a physical edition for your platform. A physical release is not established for any particular game here.
- Saves and add-ons: Consult the game’s own support information for whether progress carries over and what happens to purchased content.
Can you buy it before it leaves?
Xbox Wire’s general guidance is that members can use a Game Pass member discount to buy an exiting game before it leaves.
