How to Keep Podcast Episodes From Repeating in a YouTube Stream Playlist

First identify what is playing the episodes. If you are watching a YouTube playlist, turn off the player’s Loop or Repeat control. If OBS is sending local episode files to YouTube Live, turn off looping in the OBS source. These are separate controls; changing the playlist’s episode order will not stop it from repeating.

Find the repeat control for your setup

Use what repeats and where playback happens to narrow it down:

What you see Where to check
One episode starts over YouTube’s current-video Loop setting or an OBS Media Source’s Loop option.
The full playlist starts again after its last episode YouTube’s playlist Loop or Repeat control, an embedded player’s loop setting, or OBS’s VLC Video Source setting.

YouTube’s playback-player controls affect what you hear while watching on YouTube. They are not a global setting for a YouTube live stream. When OBS is playing files into a live stream, the relevant repeat option belongs to the OBS source.

Turn off repeat in YouTube

On a computer

  1. Open a video from the playlist and expand the playlist box.
  2. Turn off the playlist’s Loop control.
  3. If just one episode repeats, right-click the video and check its single-video Loop option as well. It is separate from playlist looping.

YouTube documents the distinct controls in its computer instructions for looping videos or playlists.

On Android

  1. Start the playlist and find the Loop control in the playlist box beneath the video.
  2. Check the icon’s state: tapping Loop a second time can select repeat of only the current video, shown with a “1.” If one episode keeps returning, make sure that single-video repeat is not selected.

See YouTube’s Android instructions.

On a TV or game console

During playlist playback, open the player’s Repeat control or Settings menu. Check that neither “Repeat • Currently playing” nor “Repeat • Playlist” is selected.

On iPhone or iPad

Use the available player and playlist controls, then verify whether repeat applies to the current episode or to the whole playlist. YouTube’s linked platform-specific help does not expose a precise iOS tap sequence here, so the exact control location may vary with the app interface.

Turn off looping in an embedded YouTube player

If a website or app embeds a playlist using the YouTube IFrame Player API, the loop state is controlled by its player code. Set setLoop(false) when initializing or reusing the player. The API documentation says playlists do not loop by default and that this setting makes playback end after the final playlist video. It also notes that the setting persists when a different playlist is loaded, so explicitly set it to false if a reused player may have had looping enabled earlier.

Refer to the YouTube IFrame Player API reference for the API setting and behavior.

Stop local episode files from repeating in OBS

When OBS plays podcast files into a live stream, open the properties for the source that contains the files. OBS has two different source types with separate loop controls:

VLC Video Source: turn off Loop Playlist

A VLC Video Source can play a media playlist. Disable Loop Playlist if those files should play once and stop at the end. OBS documents this option as on by default. VLC must be installed on the system for this source type.

Media Source: turn off Loop

A Media Source plays one file. Disable its separate Loop option if that episode should not restart. OBS documents this option as off by default, so check whether it was enabled on the source that is repeating.

Visibility Behaviour is a different setting: it determines whether a source continues, pauses, or stops when it is not visible in the scene. Changing it does not replace the loop setting. See OBS’s Media Sources guide (dated 2022-01-11) for these source options.

Keep episode order separate from repeat settings

A podcast playlist’s order determines which episode plays next, not whether playback starts over at the end. YouTube describes a podcast show as a playlist and each episode as a video. In YouTube Studio, edit the podcast and use Default Video Order to set the intended sequence:

  • Episodic show: newest to oldest.
  • Serial show: oldest to newest.

YouTube’s podcast setup guidance covers playlist organization. Set the order you want there, then separately disable repeat in the player or source that is actually playing the episodes.

If it still repeats

  • Only one episode repeats: Check YouTube’s current-video Loop state or the OBS Media Source’s Loop option.
  • The whole list repeats: Check YouTube’s playlist Loop/Repeat control, the embed’s loop setting, or OBS’s VLC Video Source Loop Playlist option.
  • The repeat toggle looks off but playback loops: Confirm you changed the control for the playback layer that owns the audio/video. A YouTube viewing control will not change an OBS source, and an OBS source option will not change a YouTube embed.
  • The wrong episode plays next: Correct the playlist’s order separately; reordering does not disable looping.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded podcast episodes live on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Episodes play as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
