Ordinary Steam Deck suspend does not keep downloads running: Valve says the Deck disconnects from Wi-Fi while suspended. To download with the screen off, use Valve’s separate low-power download mode, which runs active downloads before the Deck enters sleep. Whether that option appears can depend on the installed software, so check the Deck’s Power settings.
Why downloads stop when the Steam Deck is suspended
Regular suspend is not a background-download mode. Valve’s Steam Deck developer FAQ says the device disconnects from Wi-Fi while suspended. Its guidance is aimed at developers and does not address every later software mode, but it explains why a download should not be expected to continue in ordinary sleep.
Valve’s November 4, 2025 announcement introduced a different option: a display-off, low-power mode that can continue active downloads before the Deck goes to sleep. The key distinction is the screen being off while downloads run versus the device being fully suspended.
How to download with the display off
- While the Deck is awake and connected to Wi-Fi, start or queue the games or updates you want downloaded.
- While a download is active, press the power button. If the Deck offers to continue downloading with the screen off, select Continue.
- Alternatively, leave the Deck idle and let its display-off download mode start after the idle timeout.
Valve described these entry options in its November 4, 2025 announcement. The option is for downloads already underway; it is not a promise that a fully sleeping Deck will wake itself later to fetch queued updates.

What changes on charger power and battery
| Situation | What Valve says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Plugged in | The display-off download mode is enabled by default, according to Valve’s November 4, 2025 announcement. | Start or queue downloads while awake, then use the power-button prompt or let the idle timeout turn off the display. |
| Running on battery | Valve says to enable the mode under Settings > Power. During battery-powered downloads, the Deck enters full sleep below 20% charge. | Enable the setting if it is available, and keep enough charge for the download to finish before the low-battery sleep threshold. |
The 20% threshold is a behavior Valve described in its November 4, 2025 announcement, not an independently measured battery-life estimate. If the Deck reaches full sleep, interact with it to check download status or wake it fully.
What to check if an update is still waiting
Steam’s download controls determine which updates are queued and when per-game updates are scheduled. Valve’s Steam Support download guidance explains the download queue, auto-update scheduling, and per-game update settings. Use those controls to prepare the queue while the Deck is awake and online; they do not override the Wi-Fi disconnect that occurs in ordinary suspend.

- Confirm the Deck is connected to Wi-Fi and that the desired item is in the download queue before turning off the display.
- If the power-button prompt does not appear, check Settings > Power for the display-off download option and verify that the installed software offers it.
- If the Deck is already fully suspended, wake it to inspect the queue rather than assuming a scheduled update downloaded during sleep.
Valve’s November 17, 2025 client update provides follow-up release context, but the official material cited here does not establish that the option is exposed on every model or current stable SteamOS/client channel as of October 7, 2026. The most reliable check is whether the setting and power-button prompt appear on your own Deck.

| State | Wi-Fi and download expectation |
|---|---|
| Display-off low-power download mode | Valve says active downloads can continue before the Deck enters sleep. |
| Ordinary suspend | Valve says Wi-Fi disconnects, so downloads should not be expected to continue. |
| Awake with scheduled auto-updates | Steam’s update settings can manage when downloads are queued, but the Deck needs to be awake and online to fetch them. |
Valve’s Steam Deck specifications list a 45W power supply with Steam Deck configurations. A compatible charger can keep the Deck powered during a long download, but it does not enable downloads during ordinary suspend.
