Super Chats do not automatically appear as graphics over your video: they are highlighted messages in YouTube Live Chat. To show an alert on the video itself, configure an alert or overlay source in your encoder, then check that it appears in the actual stream output. YouTube documents a browser-source setup for its own live-stream overlay, but that is not a universal recipe for third-party Super Chat alerts.
Understand what viewers see
A Super Chat highlights a viewer’s message in Live Chat; a Super Sticker displays an animated image there. Neither feature, by itself, means an alert graphic will be rendered over the video. On-video alerts require a separate overlay or notification workflow in the streaming setup.
YouTube says Live Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. Viewers watching an embedded player therefore should not be expected to see the chat there; a graphic placed over the video is a separate configuration.
Set up and check an on-video alert
- Check channel and stream eligibility. In YouTube Studio or the Live Control Room, check that Super Chat and Super Stickers are available and enabled for the channel and the live stream. Availability depends on eligibility and settings.
- Choose an alert source that supports the event. If you use third-party software, check its current official instructions for YouTube Super Chat events and determine whether it creates an on-video overlay or only a chat-side notification. YouTube lists Streamlabs for on-screen notification popups, StreamElements for overlays, and says Super Chat works with IFTTT; that listing does not establish a current, complete setup procedure for a particular channel and encoder.
- Configure the source in your encoder. Follow the chosen tool’s current instructions to add its alert or overlay source. If using YouTube’s documented browser-source overlay workflow, open the Live Control Room settings, copy the overlay URL, add a Browser Source in the encoder, paste the URL, and set its width and height to match the stream resolution. Those instructions concern YouTube’s overlay, not a guaranteed Super Chat alert recipe. Browser-source support varies among encoders.
- Inspect the program output. Check the actual encoder output, not just the overlay’s settings page. Confirm the alert is visible at the intended size, not cropped by the output layout, and not covered by another scene or source. Test the exact channel, encoder, and layout you will use; the documented sources do not establish one universal test procedure.
- Verify the viewer’s context. Check the YouTube watch page as well as any other viewing layout you intend to support. Do not assume an embedded player includes Live Chat.
Check audience settings
If the stream or its audience is set as made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and Super Chat. An overlay cannot restore a feature YouTube has disabled, so check the audience setting and applicable restrictions before troubleshooting the alert source.

Troubleshoot alerts that are missing or misplaced
- Super Chats appear in chat but not over the video: Chat visibility is not proof that an on-video alert is configured. Confirm the selected tool supports Super Chat events and that its overlay source is present in the active encoder scene.
- The source is configured but nothing appears in the output: Check that the source is enabled in the scene being streamed and is not hidden behind another source. Test the actual output rather than relying on a configuration preview.
- The alert is cut off or the size looks wrong: Check the source dimensions against the stream resolution and inspect the full output layout for cropping or overlap.
- The browser source does not work in the encoder: YouTube cautions that browser sources are not supported in the same way by every encoder. Check the encoder’s current documentation and use a supported alert-source method.
- Chat and Super Chat are unavailable: Check feature eligibility and settings, then confirm the stream or audience is not set as made for kids, which disables both.
- It works in one viewing mode but not another: Live Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. Test the on-video overlay independently if you need an alert visible on the video.
