To stop worship music clipping, find and lower the first overloaded point in the signal chain—not just the OBS fader. Check the source, console, stream output, audio interface, and OBS meters; keep the final stream below 0 dBFS; then use an OBS limiter last in the filter chain as a safety net. A limiter cannot repair distortion created earlier.

What clipping is—and why lowering OBS may not fix it

Digital audio has a full-scale ceiling at 0 dBFS. If a microphone, instrument, console bus, interface input, or final output is driven into overload, the waveform can distort. Reducing the level later may make that distorted signal quieter, but it cannot restore the audio that was clipped upstream.

OBS can process audio internally above 0 dBFS, but the audio it records or streams needs to remain below that ceiling to avoid clipping at the final output. Check every stage rather than assuming that a non-red OBS fader means the whole signal path is clean. OBS explains its audio mixer meters and signal levels.

Trace the distortion through the signal chain

Listen at each accessible point, starting before the computer and moving toward the stream. Use the same loud passage—such as a full band entering or a strong vocal—as you work through the checks.

  1. Listen to the source. Check the microphone, instrument, playback device, or other source. If it is distorted before reaching the console, correct the source or its input gain.
  2. Check the console. Watch the channel, bus, and output meters, including the output feeding the stream. Reduce gain at the stage that overloads; lowering a later master fader does not undo clipping on a channel or bus.
  3. Check the stream feed and interface. Listen to the console’s stream output and inspect the audio interface or capture device input. If the console feed is clean but the interface input overloads, lower the console feed or interface input gain.
  4. Check OBS’s input and output. Compare the source/input indication with the output peak meter. If OBS’s input is clean but its output reaches the ceiling, reduce the broadcast mix or OBS source level and inspect processing order.
  5. Record and listen back. Make a test recording and review it on a monitoring system before the service. Listening only to the live room or only to OBS’s meters can miss problems heard at a different stage.

OBS displays more than one kind of level information: the main bar is a peak-program meter, while a black moving indicator is a VU-style measure integrated over 300 ms. Use the peak indication and its hold marker to catch brief transients; the slower indicator offers a better sense of sustained loudness, but is not a substitute for listening.

OBS documents -20 dBFS as its alignment level and -9 dBFS as its permitted maximum meter level, with the latter allowing margin for meter and alignment uncertainty. These are OBS meter references, not a YouTube live loudness target or a required mix recipe. Keep peaks comfortably below 0 dBFS and check the physical console and interface meters as well. See OBS’s explanation of its meter behavior.

Make a mix for online listeners

A mix that works in the sanctuary is not automatically right for a livestream. Room acoustics and loudspeaker placement shape what the congregation hears; online listeners hear the electronic feed. Music balance, vocal intelligibility, and speech levels may need different treatment for the stream.

If the digital console supports it, route a separate aux, matrix, or other independently controlled output to the broadcast. This lets the operator balance worship music and speech for remote listening without changing the sanctuary mix. Yamaha’s church livestream mixing guide discusses the different needs of streaming and sanctuary sound.

Listen to the stream feed itself when setting the balance. Sources that produce similar meter readings can still sound different in perceived loudness, so do not use peak levels alone to decide whether speech is clear over music.

Use an OBS limiter as the final guard

OBS includes a Limiter filter on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It can catch peaks that would otherwise rise above the output ceiling, but it is not a replacement for healthy gain staging. Put it last in the filter chain so it can guard against peaks introduced by earlier processing. OBS documents the Limiter filter and its controls.

The documented default threshold is -6 dB, with a 60 ms release. Those are defaults, not settings every church must use. Set the limiter to contain occasional peaks without making the music audibly pump or flatten. If it is reducing gain frequently, lower the upstream mix or address unusually large dynamics instead of relying on heavier limiting.

Excessive limiting can create audible artifacts, and playback systems do not all handle peaks identically. The Audio Engineering Society’s guidance on internet audio distribution provides broader context, but it is not a YouTube Live-specific setting guide: AES loudness and true-peak recommendations.

Rehearse and monitor the actual YouTube stream

  1. Test with representative material. Before the service, test using audio and video activity similar to the real event, including both worship music and speech.
  2. Listen to the received stream. Check a recording or private/unlisted stream preview on a separate listening device where practical; the room and the stream can reveal different issues.
  3. Check stream health. During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback as well as the local audio meters. YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers testing and stream-health checks: YouTube Live encoder settings.
  4. Plan checks for a 24/7 broadcast. Schedule human listening and inspection of the received stream. The specific monitoring and recovery design depends on the church’s console, interface, encoder, connection, and staffing; there is no single setup that can be inferred without those details.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 support for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 128 kbps for stereo audio in its advanced settings. That is a transport setting, not an anti-clipping control. The guidance does not establish an official YouTube Live loudness target such as -14 LUFS; set levels by avoiding overload and checking the actual stream.

When a hardware or routing upgrade makes sense

First correct the gain structure and use tools already available. If the existing console cannot provide an independently controlled stream mix, a digital mixer with a dedicated broadcast output may address the routing limitation. If the computer cannot receive the existing feed cleanly, a compatible audio interface may help. Choose only after identifying the point where the current setup fails.

A hardware audio limiter is optional: OBS already provides a software limiter, and a hardware unit cannot undo clipping that occurred before its input. Compatibility and the appropriate equipment depend on the church’s existing signal path.

Or let it run in the cloud
