On Bash-like shells, read your YouTube stream key separately without echoing it, then use a shell variable in the FFmpeg command. That keeps the literal key out of the command you type—and usually out of that shell-history entry—but it does not guarantee secrecy: variable expansion can still put the full output URL in FFmpeg’s process arguments.
Why the stream key needs careful handling
YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s password and address: they tell an encoder where to send a feed and allow YouTube to accept it. Treat the key like a password and avoid sharing it in commands, screenshots, recordings, or logs. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings explains stream keys and how to reset one.
Read the key separately in Bash
Do not type the literal key as part of an FFmpeg output URL at an interactive prompt. In Bash and similar shells, you can prompt for it without displaying what you type:

Replace [input options] with the options for your source, and confirm the correct YouTube ingestion URL and FFmpeg output options for your setup. - Run the
readline in a Bash-like shell. The prompt is visible, but the key you type is not echoed. - Run the FFmpeg command with your actual input options. The shell substitutes the key into the output URL when launching FFmpeg.
- Run
unset YT_KEYwhen finished to remove the variable from the current shell session.
What this protects—and what it does not

Do not enable set -x while handling the key: shell tracing can print commands after variable expansion. An environment or shell variable is not, by itself, a secure credential store.
For stronger local protection
If you need to reduce exposure beyond shell history, use a trusted encoder integration with protected secret configuration, and check how it stores and passes credentials. Restrict access to the account and machine running the stream. Do not assume that a variable hides the expanded URL from process-inspection tools; visibility is platform- and permission-dependent.

If the key may have been exposed
Deleting a history entry alone is not reliable incident response: copies may remain in recordings, screenshots, logs, or other locations. Reset the key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the replacement. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key.
