For stable YouTube stream health, keep FFmpeg’s output settings within YouTube’s current ingest recommendations, make sure playlist files are compatible with the concat method you use, leave upload bandwidth headroom, and test the full playback and recovery path before going live. A playlist loop and an FFmpeg process restart are different events: looping can happen inside a running process, but restarting FFmpeg may interrupt its connection to YouTube. Do not assume the stream session will continue uninterrupted; test your actual command, protocol, stream key setup, and YouTube behavior.
Separate playlist looping from an FFmpeg restart
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop is an input option for repeating an input. A loop can therefore repeat media while the same FFmpeg process remains active. Restarting that process is a separate operation: it closes and re-establishes the outbound connection, which may interrupt ingest or affect the live session. FFmpeg’s documented input looping and real-time pacing options do not promise that a process restart preserves a continuous YouTube connection. FFmpeg documentation
For a playlist that should repeat, prefer keeping the process alive and making the looping behavior part of the input or playlist design. If your workflow deliberately restarts FFmpeg between items or after an error, treat each restart as a possible ingest interruption and test the result with your own output protocol and YouTube live setup.
Choose a playlist method that fits the media
Concat demuxer for compatible files
The concat demuxer reads a list of files sequentially and adjusts timestamps. FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. If an item differs in resolution, frame rate, codec, audio layout, or stream structure, the demuxer may not be suitable as-is. Inaccurate file durations can also create timestamp artifacts at transitions. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Inspect and prepare playlist media before the live event. Use compatible inputs for the concat method, or choose a transcoding/filter approach when the files need to be normalized. Stream copy avoids decoding and encoding and can be fast and lossless, but it cannot apply filters and may not work when necessary information is unavailable. FFmpeg documentation
Decide whether to stream-copy or transcode
| Approach | When it fits | Transition and restart considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Concat with stream copy | Files already have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. | FFmpeg copies packets without re-encoding, but duration inaccuracies can produce artifacts. Keeping the process alive for the sequence avoids intentionally reconnecting between items. |
| Transcoding or filtering | Playlist files need compatible output settings or processing that stream copy cannot provide. | Normalize output as needed and test audio/video continuity and timestamps at transitions. The available guidance does not establish a tested comparative performance result. |
| Restarting FFmpeg between items | Only when the workflow specifically requires a new process. | A restart is not equivalent to input looping and may interrupt YouTube ingest. Test the actual restart and recovery behavior instead of assuming continuity. |
Match the outgoing stream to YouTube’s recommendations
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the protocol, codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to send. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options, with frame rates up to 60 fps; supported combinations can vary with protocol and content settings. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. YouTube live encoder settings

Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s table recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps and 12 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/60 fps. These are recommended encoder settings, not proof that a connection with the same nominal upload speed will be stable. Check the current table for your exact output configuration before selecting a bitrate.
Do not choose output settings solely by what the source video can play. The encoder output needs to fit YouTube’s current ingest recommendations and the capacity of your upstream connection. When changing settings, test the exact configuration you intend to use live.

Leave upload bandwidth headroom
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Where both primary and backup streams are in use, plan capacity for both plus the recommended margin. A bitrate setting that appears adequate on paper can still be disrupted by congestion or a variable connection. YouTube streaming tips
- Check the available upstream capacity at the location and time you plan to stream.
- Account for the total bitrate being sent, including a backup stream if applicable.
- Use wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi instability is the suspected cause. A cable cannot fix insufficient upstream service, congestion beyond your local network, incompatible playlist media, incorrect timestamps, or encoder misconfiguration.
Test the whole playlist and recovery path
- Prepare representative media. Use the same playlist files and output settings planned for the event. Include audio and movement similar to the intended stream.
- Run the actual FFmpeg workflow. Test playlist transitions, looping, and any deliberate process restart with the real command, output protocol, and stream key setup.
- Preview before going live. Check video, audio, transitions, and YouTube’s stream status before the event begins.
- Test failover. YouTube recommends testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. Confirm what viewers and the Live Control Room show, and verify the recovery procedure you will actually use.
- Monitor during the event. Watch the Live Control Room’s stream health, status, and specific error messages, and respond to the error shown rather than guessing at the cause.
YouTube’s guidance is to test with representative audio and movement, preview the stream, and monitor health messages during the event. YouTube live encoder settings

Troubleshoot unstable stream health
| Symptom or condition | Likely area to check | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Health drops when FFmpeg restarts | The process restart may have interrupted the outbound ingest connection. | Test the restart path with the same protocol and stream setup. If possible, keep one process alive and use input looping instead. |
| Artifacts or glitches at playlist boundaries | Files may differ in stream layout, codec, time base, or duration accuracy. | Check compatibility for the concat demuxer; prepare matching inputs or use a suitable transcoding/filter workflow. |
| Intermittent ingest warnings despite valid encoder settings | Upload capacity, local Wi-Fi stability, or network congestion may be involved. | Check upstream headroom, total stream bitrate, and local connection stability. Wired Ethernet may help only if Wi-Fi is the problem. |
| Warnings after changing output parameters | Codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, or protocol may not match the selected YouTube configuration. | Compare the actual output with YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and protocol. |
| The cause is unclear | The Live Control Room may report a specific stream status or error. | Use its health messages to narrow the issue, then retest the correction before the event. |
