How to Launch an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Automatically After Reboot

On a Linux machine that uses systemd, create a service for your FFmpeg command, enable it for boot, and keep the YouTube stream key in a restricted environment file. Configure systemd to restart FFmpeg if it exits, then verify both the service logs and the stream in YouTube Studio: an active process does not by itself mean YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast.

What you need before configuring the service

This walkthrough assumes a Linux host running systemd, FFmpeg installed at /usr/bin/ffmpeg, a dedicated account named stream, and a media file at /srv/stream/loop.mp4. Adjust the paths, account, and command to match your host. You also need a YouTube live stream set up in advance, its stream key, and network access to the ingest endpoint. Other operating systems use different boot-service mechanisms.

  • Check the FFmpeg path with command -v ffmpeg. If it differs from /usr/bin/ffmpeg, use the path returned by that command in the service.
  • Make sure the service account can read the input file and traverse its parent directories.
  • Use the current ingest details and stream settings shown for your broadcast in YouTube Studio. Codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and ingest requirements can depend on the actual stream and platform guidance; do not treat settings from an unrelated example as universal rules.

Keep the stream key out of the service command

Store the key in a root-managed environment file instead of putting a real key in the unit text, shell history, or a public repository. The example below gives root ownership and allows members of the stream group to read the file.

  1. Create the directory and file: sudo install -d -o root -g stream -m 0750 /etc/stream, then sudo install -o root -g stream -m 0640 /dev/null /etc/stream/ffmpeg.env.
  2. Edit /etc/stream/ffmpeg.env as an administrator and add YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY=YOUR_REAL_KEY. Replace the example value locally; never publish it.
  3. Confirm the permissions with sudo stat -c '%U %G %a %n' /etc/stream/ffmpeg.env. The expected ownership and mode for this example are root stream 640.

Environment files are not a substitute for careful access control: anyone who can read this file can use the key. If a key is exposed, replace it through the relevant YouTube controls and update the file.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Create the systemd unit

Create /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. The unit below shows the service structure and a looped-file input. Replace the output portion after -i with the FFmpeg encoding or stream-copy options you have validated for your media and YouTube ingest settings. The destination uses the stream key from the environment file; do not substitute a real key into the unit.

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube loop
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
Group=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/stream
EnvironmentFile=/etc/stream/ffmpeg.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/loop.mp4 -c:v YOUR_VIDEO_OPTIONS -c:a YOUR_AUDIO_OPTIONS -f flv rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}
Restart=always
RestartSec=15
TimeoutStopSec=15
KillSignal=SIGINT
StandardOutput=journal
StandardError=journal
NoNewPrivileges=true
PrivateTmp=true

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

YOUR_VIDEO_OPTIONS and YOUR_AUDIO_OPTIONS are explanatory placeholders, not literal FFmpeg options. Replace them with a complete, tested command line; a unit containing the placeholders will fail. The sample endpoint is an RTMP-style example, not a claim that one protocol or ingest URL is right for every broadcast. RTMPS is RTMP over a secure SSL connection; use the endpoint and protocol YouTube currently presents for your stream.

-re reads the file at its native rate, while -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. Those flags do not make an unsuitable file compatible with the destination. Copying streams can avoid transcoding only when the input codecs and stream properties are accepted; otherwise, use appropriate encoding options and confirm the resulting stream health in YouTube Studio.

Enable it at boot, then start it now

Saving a unit file does not automatically enable it. Reload systemd so it reads the new definition, enable the service for the boot target, and start it immediately for a first test:

  1. Reload unit definitions: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Enable automatic startup at boot: sudo systemctl enable ffmpeg-youtube.service.
  3. Start it now: sudo systemctl start ffmpeg-youtube.service.
  4. Inspect the service: sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service.

The WantedBy=multi-user.target section connects the unit to the normal multi-user boot target when enabled. Enabling arranges for startup on future boots; starting launches it in the current session. For a changed unit file, run daemon-reload before restarting the service.

What Restart=always does—and what it cannot do

Restart=always tells systemd to start FFmpeg again when the process exits; RestartSec=15 makes it wait 15 seconds before trying. This helps with process exits, but it does not repair a persistent cause of failure. A bad or revoked key, missing file, unreadable path, unavailable network, or a broadcast that YouTube has ended can lead to repeated restarts without a working live stream.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

There is a separate failure mode: FFmpeg may remain running while its output connection has failed. FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer recovery pattern for temporary output errors, with options including -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1. That is output-level recovery, not a systemd process restart. Its documented example targets a generic RTMP server; validate the syntax against your FFmpeg build and test it with the actual ingest endpoint before relying on it. Neither mechanism confirms that YouTube has accepted the stream.

Verify the stream after setup and after a reboot

  1. Check whether systemd considers the process active: sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service.
  2. Read recent service output: sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager. To follow new entries while testing, use sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f.
  3. Open the broadcast in YouTube Studio and check the preview, stream health, and recent errors. Confirm the expected video and audio appear before treating the setup as successful.
  4. Reboot during a suitable test window, then repeat the service and YouTube checks. This confirms the boot behavior as well as the current-session start.

An active (running) result establishes that the process is alive, not that the broadcast is healthy or visible to viewers. Diagnose platform-side status in YouTube Studio alongside the local logs.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
The service is not found or the unit change has no effect Unit path or systemd’s loaded definitions Check the filename under /etc/systemd/system/, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload, then inspect the service again.
FFmpeg exits immediately Command syntax, FFmpeg path, input path, or options Read journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service. Confirm the executable and media paths, replace every explanatory placeholder, and test the command with the service account and intended options.
Permission denied or input cannot be opened File ownership or directory traversal permissions Confirm that stream can read the media and traverse each parent directory. Keep the key file restricted while granting the service account only the access it needs.
The service repeatedly restarts A persistent FFmpeg startup or input error Use the journal to identify the first failure. Check the key, input availability, command, and network path before treating restarts as recovery.
Service is active but YouTube shows no healthy stream Output connection or YouTube-side broadcast state Check FFmpeg output errors and the YouTube Studio preview and health indicators. Confirm the broadcast is still active and that the endpoint and key match the stream.
It works before reboot but not afterward Boot ordering, unavailable network, or missing mounted media Review the journal from the boot attempt. The unit waits for network-online.target, but the host’s network manager must provide that target meaningfully; also ensure the input is available when the service starts.

Or let it run in the cloud
