To let a child play online, add their separate Microsoft account to your Microsoft family group, then set You can join multiplayer games to Allow in the child’s Xbox privacy and online-safety settings. The child may also need separate permissions for friends, voice and text chat, clubs, broadcasting, and the specific game or platform.
The quick fix
- Sign in with the parent or family-organizer account at Microsoft Family.
- Confirm that the child’s Microsoft account is listed as a Member. If it is not, choose Add a family member, select Member, and complete the invitation and any required adult-consent steps.
- Select the child’s profile and open the Xbox privacy and online-safety controls.
- Change You can join multiplayer games to Allow.
- If needed, review the separate settings for adding friends, communication, clubs, and broadcasting.
- Save the change. Sign the child out of Xbox or Microsoft, restart the game, and sign back in with the child’s account.
Microsoft’s available menus can differ between the website, Xbox Family Settings app, Xbox consoles, Windows, region, account type, and Xbox software version. The wording above is the important part, even if the menu location changes. See Microsoft’s Xbox Family Hub for the current controls.
Use a separate child account
Do not make the child play through the parent’s Microsoft or Xbox account. A separate child account keeps age settings, friends, messages, achievements, saves, purchases, and activity separate. It also prevents the child from accessing the parent’s payment details or unrestricted account settings.

Microsoft recommends creating an Xbox child account rather than sharing an adult account. The parent can then manage permissions without giving the child the parent’s password. If the child already has an account, use that account consistently on the console, PC, Minecraft, and other games.

Add the child to your Microsoft family group
On the web
- Open account.microsoft.com/family and sign in as the parent or family organizer.
- Select Add a family member.
- Choose Member, not Organizer, for a child.
- Enter the child’s Microsoft-account email address or phone number.
- Have the child accept the invitation.
- Complete adult consent if Microsoft requests it for the account’s age and location.
Only a family organizer can add members. If Microsoft says the child is already in another family group, that group may need to be left before the account can join yours. Microsoft documents these cases in its guide to adding people to a family group.
On an Xbox console
The documented route is broadly Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → Account → Family settings → Manage family members → Add to family. The exact prompts depend on whether the child’s account is already present on the console.

Which permissions should you allow?
Allowing multiplayer does not automatically enable every online feature. Review the relevant control for the activity your child needs:

For a younger child, start with multiplayer enabled but limit communication to friends or a parent-approved group. Unrestricted communication can expose a child to strangers, user-generated content, invitations, harassment, and inappropriate language. Xbox family controls let parents decide who can communicate with the child and what other players can see.

Purchases are a separate issue. Use purchase approval and spending controls rather than assuming that a multiplayer change controls Microsoft Store or in-game transactions.
A safer starting configuration
- Young child: multiplayer blocked or limited, friends restricted, communication blocked, clubs and broadcasting blocked, and purchases requiring approval.
- Balanced setup: multiplayer allowed, friends enabled with review, voice and text limited to friends, communication with strangers blocked, broadcasting disabled, and purchases requiring approval.
- Older teen: multiplayer enabled, friends and communication allowed with regular review, and broadcasting enabled only after discussing privacy and public-audience risks.
Screen-time limits and web filters do not replace Xbox multiplayer permissions. Microsoft’s web filtering is a separate Family Safety feature that works with Microsoft Edge when the family member is signed in to their Microsoft account; it is not a filter for every game, browser, server, or chat system. On Windows, Microsoft also advises using a standard child account rather than making the child an administrator for family features to work properly.

If the game is Minecraft
First check that Minecraft is signed in with the child’s intended Microsoft account. Xbox privacy settings can affect Minecraft multiplayer, friends, clubs, and chat, but approving Xbox multiplayer does not guarantee access to every Minecraft feature.

Bedrock and Java have different account and multiplayer arrangements, while Realms, public servers, private sessions, cross-platform play, and voice chat may involve additional rules or services. A game, console, server, platform, or third-party account can impose another restriction. Check the relevant Minecraft or server settings if the Xbox permission is already allowed. Does the child need Game Pass?
Account permission and service entitlement are different. The setting determines whether Microsoft permits the child to use multiplayer; the game and platform determine whether an online-multiplayer subscription or other entitlement is required.
Requirements vary between Xbox console, Windows PC, cloud play, free-to-play games, paid games, and cross-platform titles. Some current Xbox materials identify online console multiplayer as a benefit of Game Pass Ultimate, while individual game listings may specify Game Pass Core or Ultimate. Check the specific game’s current Xbox Store listing before buying a subscription. No paid product is required merely to change the child’s privacy permission.
What to do when the setting is missing or greyed out
- Check the signed-in account. The parent must use the family-organizer account, not the child’s account.
- Confirm family membership. Make sure the child accepted the invitation and appears as a Member.
- Check consent and account status. An incomplete adult-consent process can prevent management.
- Look for another family group. The child may already belong to a different Microsoft family.
- Verify the birth date. An incorrect date of birth can cause the account to be treated as a child or apply unexpected restrictions.
- Check the account used in the game. Multiple Xbox users can be signed in at once, so confirm that Minecraft or the game is using the child’s profile.
- Check synchronization. Save the permission, sign out, restart the game and console or PC, then sign in again.
- Review separate controls. Chat, friends, clubs, broadcasting, the game’s own parental controls, and third-party accounts may be independent of multiplayer.
- Check entitlement and service status. Confirm the game is owned or included through an eligible subscription, the device is online, and Xbox services are not experiencing an outage.
- Consider another signed-in child. Microsoft notes that restrictions associated with the youngest signed-in family member can affect games.

How to turn online play off again
Sign in as the family organizer, open the child’s Xbox privacy and online-safety settings, and change You can join multiplayer games back to Block. You can separately block communication, friend requests, clubs, or broadcasting if you want to keep multiplayer available while reducing social exposure.
Can you manage the settings from a phone?
Microsoft provides the Xbox Family Settings app for managing supported child-account controls from a phone. Available controls can vary by device and account. If a setting is not shown, use Microsoft Family on the web instead. The app cannot override game-specific restrictions, missing subscriptions, account problems, or rules imposed by third-party platforms.
