How Pokémon gain experience in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
The Pokémon Company says that defeating a Pokémon in battle earns your Pokémon Experience Points (Exp. Points). Enough experience raises its level and stats; leveling may also teach moves or enable evolution. See The Pokémon Company’s game announcement for the basic mechanics.

Wild Pokémon can also be caught by aiming and throwing a Poké Ball. Weakening one in battle makes it easier to catch. When its HP reaches zero, it enters a brief catch-window phase with one catch attempt. A Dexerto guide reports that catching a wild Pokémon after defeating it awards additional experience, though the reviewed sources do not quantify the bonus. The official description of the catch mechanic is on the same Pokémon Company page.
Best leveling methods by situation
For an immediate boost: use Exp. Candy or Rare Candy
These items are the most direct option when you want to raise a particular Pokémon without earning experience through individual encounters. Exp. Candy provides experience based on its size; Rare Candy raises a Pokémon by one level. A Dexerto guide published October 25, 2025, reports that candies can come from side missions, random floor loot, Mega Shard exchanges at Quasartico Inc., and Mable’s Research. Item availability and rewards may depend on game progress.

For steady early-game progress: complete missions, then train in your best unlocked Wild Zone
Main missions commonly involve battles or catches and open additional areas, including Wild Zones with higher-level Pokémon. Side missions become available along the way, and some are reported to reward experience candies. Clear the missions available to you, then battle in the highest-level Wild Zone you can currently reach. This ties experience-building to story progress instead of repeatedly training in an area that has become under-levelled.
For more experience per encounter: target Alpha Pokémon
Alpha Pokémon are tougher than regular Wild Zone encounters, but the Dexerto guide reports that defeating them yields more items and experience. Choose them when your team can handle the harder fight; the sources do not give a specific EXP reward or prove that Alphas produce the best EXP per unit of time.

After a wild Pokémon is defeated: try the catch-window throw
If the defeated wild Pokémon remains available to catch, use the brief catch window when practical. The official game description says you get one attempt during this phase, and Dexerto reports additional experience for catching a defeated wild Pokémon. Because there is only a short opportunity and no quantified bonus, treat the throw as a useful extra rather than a guaranteed high-speed strategy.
For a passive boost: use Red Canari Plush; treat Lucky Egg as a later option
Dexerto reports that Red Canari Plush increases earned EXP, with additional plushes increasing the effect. The guide says Colorful Screws can be exchanged for plushes and that 16 screws are needed to reach the plush’s maximum level. It also reports that Lucky Egg grants its holder extra experience, but is obtained by completing Side Mission 109, so it is not an early-game option. These item-effect and unlock details come from a secondary guide, not the Pokémon Company’s general mechanics description.

While exploring: regard breakable objects as incidental experience
The Dexerto guide reports that breaking boulders, brambles, sludge, and Mega Shards grants some experience, sometimes as little as 30 points. These objects can contribute a little while you explore, but the guide describes the gain as limited for higher-level Pokémon; they are not presented as a strong late-game farming route.

| Goal | Practical choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Raise one Pokémon immediately | Use Exp. Candy or Rare Candy | Direct progress, but depends on having the items. |
| Level while advancing the story | Complete missions and battle in the best-level Wild Zone you have unlocked | Progress also opens areas and activities; the available training level depends on story progress. |
| Seek stronger encounter rewards | Fight Alpha Pokémon | They are tougher than regular encounters; no source compares their EXP-per-hour rate. |
| Add experience after a wild battle | Attempt a catch during the catch window | The window is brief and offers one throw; the bonus amount is not stated. |
| Improve earned EXP over time | Use Red Canari Plush; pursue Lucky Egg after its reported unlock | Effects and acquisition details are from a dated secondary guide; Lucky Egg is reported as a Side Mission 109 reward. |
What is—and is not—known about the fastest method
The Pokémon Company confirms the core battle-to-experience mechanic and describes the catch window. The practical item routes, Alpha rewards, and specific unlock details above come from Dexerto’s October 25, 2025 guide. A Nintendo Life guide hub dated December 18, 2025, also covers the game and Mega Dimension DLC and notes Canari Plush EXP buffs and both console editions: Nintendo Life’s Pokémon Legends: Z-A guide hub.
None of these sources provides controlled EXP-per-hour tests, a best route for every level range, or a measured comparison between candy use and battle training. Treat “fastest” as a practical choice: candy for a targeted instant increase, and mission-led training in the strongest available area for repeatable progress.
