To reduce FFmpeg’s CPU use, first identify the video encoder, then test a lower encoder thread count while checking that the stream still runs in real time. Thread limits reduce parallel encoding work; they are not a reliable percentage cap for the whole FFmpeg process. If fewer threads make encoding fall behind, reduce the workload or use an operating-system or VPS-level resource limit if your environment provides one.
Set an encoder-specific thread limit
FFmpeg’s thread options depend on the encoder and the build installed on your VPS. Start by checking the encoder actually used by your command, then inspect that encoder’s local help:
ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264Replace libx264 with the encoder in your command—for example, another software or hardware encoder. FFmpeg’s encoder documentation describes thread controls and multithreading modes; local help is the practical check for whether a particular option is supported.
As a starting experiment, set the video encoder’s thread count explicitly with a video stream specifier:

-threads:v 4Place the option with the output options for the stream it should affect. The value shown is only an example, not a recommended setting for every VPS. Reduce the count in steps and measure each run. FFmpeg does not document a fixed CPU percentage per thread, and the resulting load also depends on the encoder, filters, input, output settings, and other process work.
Measure the stream under its real workload
A stream has to process and deliver frames at least as fast as they are needed. A thread count that lowers CPU use but makes FFmpeg fall behind is not a successful limit: delay can grow and the live output may become unstable.

- Test with the same resolution, frame rate, audio, filters, and representative motion you intend to stream.
- Watch VPS CPU use and leave headroom for the operating system and other services.
- Check whether FFmpeg sustains real-time processing without accumulating delay.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and connection messages during a private or otherwise appropriate test.
- Compare visual quality as well as CPU use; a setting that changes the output can reduce quality.
FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes -re as reading input at its native frame rate and notes its usefulness when streaming a file. It can be appropriate when a file is being used as a live source. Do not add it reflexively to an input that is already arriving live. FFmpeg also documents benchmark reporting for timing work; use it alongside an end-to-end stream test rather than treating a short benchmark as proof that a long stream will remain stable.
If fewer threads are not enough
Thread limits control parallelism, not the amount of work each frame requires. If encoding cannot keep up after you reduce threads, try changing the workload one variable at a time and validate both output and stream health.

- Lower resolution or frame rate: this can reduce the work per second, but changes the delivered picture or motion.
- Choose a less demanding encoder preset: a faster preset may ease CPU demand, with a possible trade-off in compression efficiency or visual quality.
- Use stream copy when suitable: if the source is already encoded compatibly and needs no video transformation, copying the encoded stream can avoid video re-encoding. It will not suit a workflow that needs filters, resizing, frame-rate changes, or a different codec.
- Use an external resource ceiling for a hard limit: a VPS or operating system may provide resource controls, but availability and configuration vary. FFmpeg’s encoder thread option is not a substitute for that kind of quota.
There is no universally best thread count or preset. Assess CPU headroom, real-time performance, picture quality at the chosen output settings, and YouTube’s stream health together.
Keep YouTube’s stream settings compatible
Reducing CPU should not mean changing encoding settings blindly. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. It also recommends RTMPS.

Choose settings that your encoder and available upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate, so consult its current table rather than relying on a number copied into a command. Test with representative audio and motion, then check YouTube’s stream health and messages while the stream is running.

FFmpeg documents -cpucount as an override for the CPU count FFmpeg detects, intended for testing. It is not documented as an operating-system CPU quota or a production CPU limiter. Do not use it as a substitute for an encoder’s thread setting or a resource ceiling provided by your VPS environment.
