To live stream from your phone, open the YouTube app, tap Create → Live, set up the stream, then tap Go live. First check that your channel meets YouTube’s mobile-live requirements: at least 50 subscribers, verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
Check whether your channel and phone are eligible
YouTube’s mobile-live requirements, as currently listed in its mobile streaming help, are:
- Your channel has at least 50 subscribers.
- Your channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- Live streaming is enabled. If you are turning it on for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Your device runs Android 8.0 or later, or iOS 8 or later.
- You are at least 16 years old, YouTube’s general minimum age for livestreaming.
The subscriber, device, and activation figures are YouTube Help requirements; the help pages do not show publication dates, so check YouTube’s current guidance if a setting or eligibility result differs.
Start a livestream in the YouTube app
- Open the YouTube app on your phone or tablet and sign in to the channel you intend to use.
- Tap Create, then Live.
- Tap Edit to enter the stream title and other details. Review the available controls for visibility and audience, live chat, age restriction, monetization, and any other options you want to set.
- Choose whether to start now or schedule the stream for later.
- When you are ready, tap Go live.
- To stop broadcasting, tap Finish. YouTube creates an archive; you can later change its privacy or delete it.
For a scheduled stream, return to Create → Live, tap the calendar, select the scheduled stream, and tap Go live. YouTube says a private practice mode is rolling out to creators; look for it in the app, but do not rely on it being available on every account.

Choose vertical or horizontal before you start
The best orientation depends on how viewers will watch and which features matter. Vertical live streams can appear in the Shorts feed and provide a full-screen mobile viewing experience. Horizontal streams are better suited when you want features YouTube lists for horizontal viewing that are not available in the vertical live feed.

Decide on orientation before going live. In YouTube’s documented Live Control Room workflow, vertical format cannot be added after a stream has started.

Check visibility and audience settings carefully
Do not assume the default privacy setting matches your intention. YouTube says the default for mobile streams is unlisted for users aged 13–17 and public for users aged 18 or older; creators can change it. Its general livestreaming guidance sets a minimum age of 16 to stream, so check the account’s current eligibility and inspect the audience and visibility controls before starting.
Channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers may have a limit on the number of viewers for mobile livestreams. Their archived streams are set to private by default. YouTube says it can take several weeks for policy changes to reflect; after a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, removing the mobile audience limitation can also take several weeks. If the channel drops below 50 subscribers, it loses access to mobile live streaming.

Keep the setup simple and test first
YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” The phone is the essential device for the direct in-app method, and YouTube recommends trying a test livestream so you can get comfortable with the steps.
- Optional phone tripod or holder: useful if you want hands-free, stationary framing. Check that the mount fits your phone.
- Optional external microphone: consider one if you need different audio capture. Confirm that it is compatible with your phone’s connector or connection method.
Neither accessory is part of YouTube’s mobile eligibility checklist. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish a required upload speed, battery capacity, or mobile-data allowance, so plan for your own connection and power needs rather than treating an unsupported number as a requirement.

Troubleshoot common mobile-live problems
The Live option is missing
- Confirm the channel has at least 50 subscribers.
- Check that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- Confirm live streaming has been enabled. If it was just enabled for the first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Check that the phone meets YouTube’s listed operating-system minimum.
The stream has fewer viewers than expected
If your channel has more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may be limiting the number of mobile viewers. Reaching 1,000 does not necessarily remove the limit immediately; YouTube says the change can take several weeks.
The archived stream is private
Check the archive’s privacy setting. YouTube sets mobile livestream archives to private by default for channels in the applicable under-1,000-subscriber band, and creators can change privacy settings afterward.
