YouTube requires at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, live streaming enabled, no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and Android 8.0 or newer. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
Check whether your channel and device are eligible
YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements are:
- At least 50 subscribers.
- A verified channel.
- Live streaming enabled on the channel.
- No live-streaming restrictions on the channel within the past 90 days.
- An Android device running Android 8.0 or newer.
If you have just enabled live streaming, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours before you can start your first stream. The requirements and app steps are listed in YouTube Help’s Android mobile live-streaming guide.
Start a live stream in the YouTube app
- Open the YouTube app on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap Create, then tap Live.
- Tap Edit to enter the stream details. Choose a title and visibility, set the audience options, and, if you want to broadcast later, schedule the stream. You can also choose whether to screencast your phone’s screen.
- When the setup is ready, tap Go live.
Start a scheduled stream
- In the YouTube app, tap Create, then Live.
- Tap the calendar icon and select the scheduled stream.
- Tap Go live.
Choose visibility and understand who can watch
You can set a mobile livestream to public, private, or unlisted. YouTube’s default mobile live-stream privacy setting is unlisted for users aged 13–17 and public for users aged 18 or older; check the visibility setting before going live if you want a different audience.

Channels with more than 50 and fewer than 1,000 subscribers may have a limit on how many viewers can watch a mobile livestream. Their stream archives default to private. YouTube says changes to these limits may take a few weeks to appear. Even after reaching 1,000 subscribers, it may take several weeks for the audience limitation to be removed. A channel does not lose access to mobile livestreaming unless it falls below 50 subscribers.
End the broadcast and manage its archive
When you are done, tap Finish. YouTube displays a recap with stream statistics and creates an archive on your channel. You can later change the archive’s privacy setting or delete it.

If the Live option is missing
- Check the subscriber threshold: the channel needs at least 50 subscribers for mobile live streaming.
- Verify the channel and enable live streaming: confirm both are complete in YouTube’s channel settings.
- Check for restrictions: a live-streaming restriction within the past 90 days prevents eligibility.
- Wait after enabling the feature: YouTube says initial activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Check the Android version: the device must run Android 8.0 or newer.
If the channel has between 50 and 1,000 subscribers, the Live option may still be available even though audience limits apply. Those limits, and private-by-default archives, are separate from eligibility to start a mobile stream.
What to know before streaming a game from your phone
YouTube’s mobile guide supports choosing a screencast option during setup, so you can broadcast your phone’s screen. The guide does not specify a required internet speed, recommended resolution or frame rate, or battery-life target. It also does not say that a tripod, external microphone, lighting, capture device, or encoder is necessary for the documented in-app method. Avoid relying on an assumed technical threshold; check the app’s available options and your device’s behavior before a planned broadcast.
