How to Loop a 10-Hour Rain Video in OBS for YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a 10-hour rain video in OBS, add the local file to a scene as a Media Source, open its properties, and turn on Loop. Then connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and key, test the preview and audio, and monitor stream health. A 10-hour broadcast is below YouTube’s stated 12-hour archive threshold, but make a local recording if you need a dependable copy.

Set up the rain video as a looping source

  1. Create or select a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes dock to select a scene or click the plus button to create one.
  2. Add the video. In the Sources dock, click the plus button and choose Media Source. Create a new source, then browse to and select your local rain video. OBS documents Media Source as the built-in way to add media files to a scene (OBS Project: Media Sources).
  3. Enable the repeat. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. OBS describes this setting as making the file play again once playback has completed. It restarts the file; it does not lengthen or alter the video itself (OBS Project: Media Sources).
  4. Fit the image. Check that the video fills the canvas as intended. If it does not, resize or reposition the source in the preview; avoid stretching it out of proportion.
  5. Check audio. If the rain recording includes sound, watch the OBS Audio Mixer while it plays. Confirm the meter moves and that the intended audio is audible. If the video is meant to be silent, verify that no unintended desktop or microphone audio is being sent.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s stream settings, or select YouTube as the service if using OBS’s integrated connection option. YouTube’s key identifies where the encoder sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it, so treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it (YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming).
  3. Start a short private or unlisted test where practical. Check the Live Control Room preview, picture framing, sound, and stream-health messages before making the broadcast public. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes, and YouTube recommends a representative test and monitoring stream health (OBS Project: Quick Start Guide; YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream).

Choose output settings your connection can sustain

Use the source video’s quality and your upload capacity to choose a resolution and bitrate. For a mostly static rain scene, 720p30 can be a reasonable lower-bandwidth choice; 1080p30 retains more detail when the file supports it and the connection is stable. Neither is universally best. The ranges below are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations on its encoder settings page, checked October 3, 2026; they are guidance, not a guarantee that a particular PC or ISP can sustain the stream.

Output at 30 fps YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate When it may fit
720p 3–8 Mbps When lower upload use is more important and the source looks acceptable at this resolution.
1080p 5–14 Mbps When the source has enough detail and the upload connection can sustain the higher rate.

YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not above four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward OBS setup, use CBR, set the keyframe interval to two seconds, and choose an audio format supported by the encoder guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS (YouTube Help: Encoder settings).

Before committing to a bitrate, test the real upload connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate; for example, a 5 Mbps stream calls for roughly 6 Mbps of available upload capacity under that guideline. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of steady throughput for a 10-hour broadcast (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream).

Make a local recording and check archive expectations

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams that exceed 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends making a local archive. A planned 10-hour stream is below that stated threshold, but an automatic YouTube archive should not be your only copy if the recording matters (YouTube Help: Archive live streams).

Enable OBS recording before going live if you need a backup. Confirm the recording path has enough free space, start a test recording, and verify that the file grows and plays back correctly. This is especially important for a long session: do not assume a recording is being saved merely because the live preview is working.

When to use VLC Video instead

For one rain video, Media Source with Loop is the direct option. If you want several clips to play as a playlist, OBS also documents VLC Video, which has a Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. A playlist is useful for multiple intentional clips; it is unnecessary for a single file (OBS Project: Media Sources).

Check rights to the rain video and audio

Looping a file does not grant permission to stream it. Confirm that you own or have permission to use both the video and any rain sound recording, including any music or other audio included in the file. OBS and YouTube setup instructions cannot establish the rights for a particular recording. YouTube may act on copyright claims, so use material whose license covers live streaming and any archive or replay you intend to keep.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The video stops after ten hours instead of repeating. Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is checked on the correct source. A different source or a replacement file may have its own settings.
  • The stream is live but the picture is black or missing. Confirm the Media Source points to a file that still exists, is visible in the scene, and is not hidden behind another source. Check the OBS preview before starting the broadcast.
  • The rain audio is missing or too loud. Watch the Audio Mixer while the source plays, check its mute state and level, and listen to the test feed in YouTube’s preview. Also ensure desktop or microphone audio is not unintentionally mixed in.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed. Recheck the stream URL and key for the selected stream, and confirm the stream is configured in the Live Control Room. If you suspect the key was exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  • YouTube reports connection or stream-health problems. Lower the bitrate or resolution, confirm the encoder is using CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and retest. Keep the recommended upload headroom; nominal speed alone does not rule out instability.
  • The local backup is absent or incomplete. Check OBS recording is enabled, verify its save location and available disk space, and test playback before relying on it for the full event.
