How to Loop a 1080p Video on YouTube Live with a Low-Power PC

Use OBS to loop a prerecorded 1080p video on YouTube Live, with recommended bitrate and keyframe settings, hardware-encoding advice, and practical reliability checks for a low-power PC.

You can loop a prerecorded 1080p video on YouTube Live with OBS Studio: add the file as a looping media source, connect OBS to YouTube using your stream key, and send the stream with a supported hardware H.264 encoder if your PC has one. For 1080p30, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Test the actual PC and connection before leaving the broadcast unattended; hardware encoding helps reduce CPU work but cannot guarantee a low-power machine will stream reliably.

Can you stream a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live broadcast?

Yes. YouTube Live can receive an encoder-based stream from software such as OBS Studio, which can play a prerecorded file continuously as a media source. Your PC must stay powered on, OBS must remain running, and your internet connection must keep sending the stream. YouTube says first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before a planned broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

A looped stream is still a live broadcast. Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use, and follow YouTube’s live-streaming and monetization rules. Repeating a file does not make copyrighted material authorized, nor does it guarantee monetization. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says channels must have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days and that the minimum age to livestream is 16.

Prepare the PC, channel, and source video

  • Verify that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that it has no current restriction that prevents going live. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • Use a local video file that plays correctly from beginning to end. Check its picture, audio, and duration before configuring OBS.
  • Measure upload speed, not download speed. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate; other devices and network fluctuations can use that capacity. A wired connection may reduce some local wireless variability, but does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
  • Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  • Confirm the PC can stay powered, avoid sleep, and remain connected for the intended broadcast duration. Test the machine rather than assuming that a low-power PC will sustain the job.

Configure OBS to loop the video

  1. Create a scene. In OBS Studio, create a scene for this broadcast. Exact menu labels can differ by OBS version.
  2. Add the video. Add a Media Source and select the prerecorded file. Enable the source’s loop behavior in its properties. OBS labels and controls can change between releases; confirm the setting in the version installed on your PC.
  3. Check the audio. Play the source and watch the OBS audio mixer. Confirm the file’s sound appears at a sensible level and is not muted or clipping. If the video is intended to be silent, verify that intentionally rather than discovering it after going live.
  4. Set the canvas and output. Choose 1920×1080 output and 30 fps as a sensible starting point for a 1080p source that does not need 60 fps. Match the source’s intended frame rate when practical.
  5. Connect to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select an encoder stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, choose the YouTube service or preset where available, enter the key, and use RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure stream ingestion; see its encoder settings.
  6. Start with a test. Start streaming from OBS, then inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Use representative movement and audio, not just a static opening frame, before relying on the broadcast.

Which OBS settings should you use for 1080p YouTube Live?

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 live-ingest settings, not upload-video settings. Start with 1080p30 unless the source’s motion benefits from 60 fps and both the PC and network can sustain it.

YouTube’s 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps figures are platform recommendations for H.264 live streaming at those resolutions and frame rates. Leave upload capacity above the selected bitrate; YouTube recommends 20% headroom in its streaming tips. A nominal speed-test result is not a guarantee of stable upload throughout a long stream.

Use a hardware encoder if the PC supports one

In OBS’s output settings, select an available hardware H.264 encoder rather than x264 software encoding if your system supports it. OBS documents Intel Quick Sync on supported Intel graphics, NVIDIA NVENC on compatible NVIDIA GPUs, and AMD AMF on compatible AMD hardware. Availability and results depend on the GPU, generation, drivers, and OBS version. OBS notes that hardware encoding can move work off the CPU, but older hardware encoders may produce lower quality at the same bitrate. Update the graphics drivers and test quality and stability on the actual machine; selecting a hardware encoder is not proof that the PC can sustain a 24/7 stream. See the OBS hardware encoding guidance.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

  1. Run OBS with the video looping and watch the PC’s load, temperature, and playback for a meaningful test period.
  2. Check Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm the image is 1080p, motion is smooth enough for the content, and audio is present and synchronized.
  3. Test the network at the location and time you intend to stream. Verify upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended headroom, and avoid saturating the connection with other uploads.
  4. Let the file reach its end and confirm it starts again without a gap or a stuck frame. Check OBS after the transition.
  5. Confirm the computer will not sleep, restart for an update, or lose power during the planned broadcast. Keep a way to monitor and recover the stream.

YouTube’s live streaming tips cover setup and monitoring considerations. A successful short test reduces uncertainty, but cannot guarantee a future network or power outage will not interrupt a long broadcast.

Troubleshooting common loop-stream problems

  • The stream will not start: Check that live streaming is activated for the channel, select the correct stream in Live Control Room, and re-enter the private stream key if needed. A first-time activation may still be pending for up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames: Check upload capacity and leave the recommended 20% headroom. Reduce competing network traffic; if necessary, test a lower frame rate or bitrate that remains within YouTube’s recommendations for the chosen format.
  • The PC struggles or OBS becomes unstable: Try a supported hardware encoder, reduce unnecessary scene sources, and test at 1080p30 rather than 60 fps. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload, but support and quality vary by hardware and drivers.
  • The video stops instead of repeating: Reopen the media source properties and verify looping is enabled in your installed OBS version. Test the end-to-start transition before going live for a long period.
  • The stream has no sound: Check that the source’s audio appears in the OBS mixer, is not muted, and is routed to the stream. Check the Live Control Room preview during a test.
  • The stream key no longer works or may be exposed: Confirm you are using the key for the selected YouTube stream. If the key has been shared or exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
