How to Loop a Long Lofi Video on YouTube Live Using OBS Media Sources

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a long lofi video on YouTube Live, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, select the local video file, and enable Loop in the source properties. Then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream using its server URL and stream key, preview the scene, and test the broadcast before going live.

Choose a source: one video or a playlist

OBS source Best for What it does Requirement
Media Source One local video file Its Loop setting replays the file after playback completes. No additional player installation is specified by OBS.
VLC Video A playlist of media files Provides Loop Playlist, enabled by default. VLC must be installed. For 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC.

For a single long lofi video, Media Source is the direct option. OBS lists common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, TS, FLV, and GIF. Its documentation describes repeat behavior, not a tested gapless transition, so do not assume the end-to-start boundary will be seamless.

Set up the OBS scene and loop

  1. Create or select the scene. In OBS Studio, choose the scene you intend to broadcast. In the Sources dock, select the + button and choose Media Source.
  2. Select the video. In the Media Source properties, choose the local lofi video file.
  3. Enable repeat playback. Turn on Loop, then apply the source properties. OBS defines this as playing the file again after it finishes.
  4. Check source activation behavior. Restart playback when source becomes active is a separate property and is on by default. It controls whether playback restarts when the source becomes visible in the current scene; it is not the setting that repeats the file at its end.
  5. Check the picture and sound. Confirm that the video appears as intended in the scene and that its audio is present. OBS recommends testing with audio and video representative of the planned broadcast.

For multiple files, add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist. Install VLC first; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC. Its Loop Playlist setting is on by default. The documentation establishes playlist looping, but not whether transitions are gapless.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Enable live streaming for the channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the time you plan to broadcast.
  2. Create or choose an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one set up for an encoder.
  3. Copy YouTube’s connection details into OBS. Enter the stream URL and stream key from YouTube in OBS’s stream settings. The stream key is the credential that lets OBS send video to YouTube. Keep it private; reset it if you think it has been exposed.
  4. Use the recommended protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Select it where the encoder connection settings offer that option.
  5. Preview, test, then start. Check the OBS output preview and run a short test with the same type of audio and video you plan to use. Monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on the broadcast.

Exact OBS and YouTube screen layouts can change. Use the current stream URL and key shown for the selected stream in YouTube Studio rather than reusing connection details from an unrelated stream.

Choose resolution and bitrate for your connection

There is no single bitrate that suits every upload connection or output resolution. Choose settings that your available upload capacity can sustain, then test and monitor stream health. In YouTube’s encoder guidance, 720p at 30 fps has a listed video bitrate range of 2–6 Mbps. That is YouTube operational guidance for that resolution and frame rate, not a universal recommendation for other settings or connections.

OBS and YouTube’s guidance recommend testing the encoder with representative audio and video. If the stream health indicates trouble, lower the output demands or address the available upload capacity, then test again. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the connection.

Protect the video and music rights

YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, expressly including music licensing rights. Live content must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and applicable laws. Use lofi music and visuals that your channel is authorized to stream and archive. Calling a track “lofi” or “royalty-free” does not by itself establish that you hold the required rights.

Know what looping and archiving do—and do not—guarantee

OBS’s Loop setting repeats the local file after playback completes; it does not establish that a long broadcast will remain uninterrupted or that the repeat boundary will be gapless. YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish reliable archive behavior for streams longer than 12 hours. If you need a saved copy, check YouTube’s current guidance and keep an appropriate local recording.
