To loop a prerecorded podcast on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, use -stream_loop -1 before the input’s -i option, read local media in real time with -re, and send the encoded output to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest address with your stream key. The command’s encoding and mapping options depend on your files, so treat the example below as a template—not a tested, copy-and-run command.
Prepare the podcast audio and video
Decide what viewers will see while the podcast plays: for example, a prepared video, a still-image presentation, or an existing video track in the episode file. FFmpeg must produce a valid video-and-audio output for the stream; the appropriate video source, audio mapping, codecs, and output options depend on the files and your FFmpeg build.
Loop one episode file
If the episode is already a suitable media file, loop that input with -stream_loop -1. The value -1 means repeat indefinitely. Put this input option before -i.
Loop several episodes in order
For a playlist, first prepare the episodes in the order you want them to play, then loop the combined input. Do not assume that arbitrary files can be joined with stream copy: incompatible codecs, stream layouts, resolutions, frame rates, or other properties may require re-encoding or a different concat method. Check the transitions between episodes, especially where audio levels or video formats differ.

Get the YouTube Live stream details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream’s encoder settings into your local encoder configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. See YouTube Help’s encoder settings.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password. Do not paste it into a public command, screenshot, support post, or log that others can access.
Build the FFmpeg command
For one local input, this is the command shape:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "episode.mp4" "RTMPS_INGEST_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY"
Replace the bracketed portion with output options that match the actual input and your YouTube stream, and replace the final placeholder with the RTMPS endpoint and stream key from YouTube Studio. The example intentionally leaves out encoding and mapping options: a universal set would be misleading when source files and FFmpeg builds differ.

Both -re and -stream_loop are input options, so place them before -i. -re makes FFmpeg read a local file at its media rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. FFmpeg documents these options in its command-line documentation.
Choose output settings for YouTube
YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for video; AAC or MP3 for audio; constant bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate for the output resolution, frame rate, and codec that your real upload capacity can sustain; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every FFmpeg build or input can use every listed codec. YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for viewers, so your encoder’s output settings describe the feed you send—not every viewer’s playback format.
RTMPS or HLS?
For this workflow, RTMPS is the straightforward default because YouTube recommends it and it avoids HLS’s additional playlist and segment setup. YouTube supports HLS ingestion separately, but it requires segmented rolling playlists and has higher latency than RTMP. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Test the stream before relying on it
- Start FFmpeg and check that the preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Listen for clean audio and check that the picture is present and stable.
- For a multi-episode playlist, watch and listen across representative episode transitions, not just the opening.
- Check YouTube’s stream health indicators and resolve warnings before making the broadcast public or leaving it unattended. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring encoder streams; see its live streaming tips.
Plan around archives and copyright
Long-running streams and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a stream that runs indefinitely being saved as one complete archive. If a complete archive matters, plan deliberate stop-and-restart points and confirm the resulting videos in Studio. The 12-hour archive guidance is from YouTube Help; the page checked for this article does not state a publication date.
Rights to rebroadcast a podcast
Public availability does not mean a podcast is cleared for continuous live rebroadcast. You need rights and permissions that cover the use on YouTube, including any music, clips, guest material, or other third-party content in the episodes. YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content; a match may lead to a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. For licensed third-party content, a rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist or the stream may still be interrupted. Review your agreements and ask the relevant rights holders; the applicable permissions depend on your specific contracts. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The file plays once and stops | -stream_loop -1 is missing or was placed after the input. |
Put -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i option. |
| The stream races through the file or ends unexpectedly | The local input is not being read at its media rate, or the source itself has ended without a loop. | For a local file, put -re before -i and confirm the loop option applies to that input. |
| YouTube does not receive a usable feed | The endpoint or key is wrong, the output settings are unsuitable, or the upload cannot sustain the selected bitrate. | Recheck the RTMPS URL and private stream key in Live Control Room, inspect FFmpeg’s output, and compare codec, keyframe interval, bitrate, and upload capacity with YouTube’s current settings. |
| Video or audio is missing | The output mapping or encoding options do not match the streams in the source file. | Inspect the input’s available streams and revise the output mapping and codecs for that media and FFmpeg build. |
| Playback breaks at an episode boundary | The files may not be compatible with the chosen concatenation method, or their stream properties differ. | Test transitions; use a compatible concat approach or re-encode the combined playlist as needed. |
| The live broadcast is interrupted despite a working encoder | A third-party content match or rights restriction may apply. | Review YouTube’s copyright notice and your permissions. If content is licensed, ask the rights holder about the Content ID allowlist for your channel. |
