Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo loop a local prerecorded video into your own YouTube Live event from a Mac, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option and -re to feed the file at normal playback speed. Create or select a YouTube Live event, then send the encoded video to that event’s RTMPS server URL with its private stream key. This is for streaming a file you own or have permission to use—not for looping or rebroadcasting another channel’s YouTube playback URL.
What this method does—and what it does not
FFmpeg can repeatedly read a local file and send it as a live encoder feed to your YouTube event. The -stream_loop -1 option means loop the input indefinitely; -re paces a file input in real time. Together, they let a prerecorded video play continuously until you stop FFmpeg or the connection ends.
This does not create a loop on YouTube’s playback page, nor does it provide instructions for taking another channel’s live stream and rebroadcasting it. Use video and audio that you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules before broadcasting.
Before you start
- A Mac with FFmpeg installed. The command below is a template, not a tested installation-specific command. FFmpeg builds vary, and some may not include the
libx264encoder. - A local video file whose codecs, resolution, frame rate and audio you know. Check the actual streams before deciding whether to copy them or re-encode.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live event, plus that event’s server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- An upload connection that can sustain the bitrate you choose. Leave headroom rather than setting the encoder to the full measured capacity of an unstable connection.
Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live event, then open Live Control Room’s stream settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key for that event. Use the event-specific values in the FFmpeg command; do not substitute a playback URL.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Avoid exposing it in screenshots, shared shell history or logs. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room.
- For a custom stream key, review YouTube’s resolution settings. Manual resolution lets you choose output settings in your encoder; automatic settings are another option where available. Match your FFmpeg output to the selected configuration.
YouTube documents RTMP and RTMPS for encoder streams and recommends RTMPS. Prefer the encrypted RTMPS server URL shown for your event.

Run the looping FFmpeg command
Replace the file path, frame-rate-dependent GOP values and ingest destination with values appropriate to your file and event. Keep -stream_loop -1 before the matching -i; it is an input option.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
-b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This example encodes H.264 video and AAC audio in an FLV stream. The 4,500 kbps video rate is only an example, not a universal recommendation. The GOP settings of 60 frames represent two seconds only at 30 fps. Set -g and -keyint_min to the frame count for your chosen two-second keyframe interval—for example, 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.

The command assumes your FFmpeg build supports libx264. If FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder, check the installed build and its matching documentation rather than assuming all macOS binaries include it. FFmpeg’s documentation is regenerated nightly, so available options can differ by version.
Choose output settings that fit the event and connection
| Setting | Practical choice | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | Use the event’s RTMPS server URL when available. | YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. |
| Video codec | H.264 for the re-encoding template. | Supported by YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance. |
| Audio codec | AAC in the example; YouTube also lists MP3. | Check that the source has an audio stream if you expect sound. |
| Frame rate and keyframes | Use a frame rate up to 60 fps and target a two-second keyframe interval. | YouTube’s guidance says keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart. |
| Rate control | Use CBR where configuring the encoder for YouTube’s recommended workflow. | Ensure the upload connection can sustain the selected rate. |
| Bitrate | Choose for the resolution, frame rate and available upload capacity. | YouTube’s current encoder guidance accessed in 2026 recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 720p30. These are recommendations, not guarantees of quality or connectivity. |
The example’s 4,500 kbps setting does not match either of those two cited resolution recommendations exactly. Adjust it for your intended output and sustainable connection. A higher resolution or frame rate generally requires more bitrate; if the connection cannot hold the target consistently, reduce the output demands instead of allowing repeated drops.

Stream copy or re-encode?
Re-encode for predictable output
The example re-encodes to H.264 and AAC, giving you control over bitrate and keyframe timing. This is the more predictable starting point when the source format, container compatibility or keyframe pattern is uncertain. It also uses more Mac processing than copying streams, so monitor encoder load and stream health.
Consider stream copy only when the source already fits
If the file’s existing streams already match the target codecs and other requirements, stream copy may avoid re-encoding. But stream copy cannot apply filters, and it can fail when the destination container needs information the source does not provide. Confirm the file’s streams and test before relying on it for a live event.

Test the broadcast and end it deliberately
- Before the intended broadcast, run a short test using representative motion and audio from the file.
- Watch the event in Live Control Room. Check stream health and messages, and confirm that video and audio arrive as expected.
- When finished, stop the FFmpeg process and check that the YouTube event ends as intended.
- YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. Do not assume the same archive behavior for a stream that runs 12 hours or longer.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg says the encoder is unknown or unavailable. | The installed build may not include libx264. |
Check the encoders available in your FFmpeg build and consult documentation for that version. Do not assume a different option or build is present. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream. | Wrong event server URL or key, a mistyped destination, or a connection issue. | Re-copy the server URL and key from the selected event’s stream settings. Keep the key private and check Live Control Room’s status messages. |
| The stream starts but drops or reports poor health. | The chosen bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or the output settings may not match the selected event configuration. | Check stream health, verify the configured resolution and frame rate, then reduce bitrate or output demands and test again. |
| Playback is too fast or the feed is not paced as expected. | The local file may not be read in real time. | For a file input, use -re as shown. FFmpeg documents it as equivalent to -readrate 1. |
| Video or audio is missing or incompatible. | The file may not contain the expected streams, or stream copy may not fit the output container. | Inspect the source streams, test representative content, and use the re-encoding template if predictable codecs and keyframes are needed. |
| The loop option has no effect or is rejected. | -stream_loop is in the wrong position. |
Place -stream_loop -1 before the -i for the input it should loop. |
| The process ends but the event remains open, or the archive is absent. | The encoder and event lifecycle may not have ended as expected; archive behavior depends on stream duration. | Stop FFmpeg, confirm the event’s state in YouTube, and note that the documented automatic archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours. |
