You can loop a prerecorded video into a YouTube Live stream from Linux by sending it from FFmpeg to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Studio. The key setup is straightforward; the exact FFmpeg loop option depends on your installed version, so verify its syntax locally instead of copying an unverified command. YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers supported formats and stream settings, but the available sources do not establish a confirmed, current loop-option command.

What you need before starting

  • A Linux machine with FFmpeg installed and an input video file it can read.
  • A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the bitrate you choose.
  • An FFmpeg build and output muxer that support the selected protocol and codecs. YouTube’s list of supported codecs does not mean every local FFmpeg build includes an encoder for each one.

This method runs on the Linux host where FFmpeg is running. For a continuous stream, that machine and its network connection must remain available; a remote host is another option, but adds separate hosting and operations considerations.

Set up the YouTube Live stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. The URL is the destination; the key identifies and authorizes the encoder feed.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube describes it as functioning like the stream’s password and address. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or shared terminal history. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg’s output configuration.
  4. Check the selected stream’s settings, including auto-start, DVR, and latency. Do not assume their defaults: behavior depends on the stream settings you chose.

Configure FFmpeg to repeat the video

FFmpeg must reopen the input file when it reaches the end. The precise option and its placement are version-sensitive; the available official FFmpeg reference located for this topic was a historical mailing-list patch, not current command-line documentation. Check the installed version’s manual or help output and confirm the input-loop syntax before building a production command. Do not treat a command copied from an unrelated FFmpeg version as verified.

  1. Check the installed build and its available encoders and protocols. Choose only a video/audio codec and output path that your build supports.
  2. Consult the loop option documentation for that exact FFmpeg version. Confirm whether it applies to the input and how it should be positioned relative to the input filename.
  3. Configure FFmpeg’s output to use the YouTube server URL and stream key. Keep the actual key out of public scripts and examples; use a private configuration method appropriate to your system.
  4. Set the output codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings to match a row in YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the capacity of your upload connection.

Because current loop-option syntax was not confirmed by the available FFmpeg documentation, this article intentionally does not provide a copy-and-run command. Verify the option against the manual installed with your FFmpeg package before starting the stream.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

YouTube Help’s current encoder recommendations include RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Select the codec and output format based on both YouTube’s guidance and the encoders available in your FFmpeg build. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

Setting YouTube guidance Practical implication
Transport RTMP or RTMPS Use the protocol supported by the selected YouTube stream and your FFmpeg output configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
Video codec H.264, H.265, or AV1 Use a codec that your installed FFmpeg build can actually encode and that matches the relevant YouTube settings row.
Rate control CBR Configure a constant bitrate rather than assuming a variable-rate output will match the recommendation.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps Choose a frame rate compatible with the source, encoder, and corresponding bitrate guidance.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds Set the encoder’s keyframe/GOP interval accordingly; the exact option name depends on the encoder.
H.264 at 1080p30 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended These are YouTube-published encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of quality or a measured result. Ensure the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
Stereo audio 128 kbps recommended Use an audio encoder and bitrate supported by your FFmpeg build and source audio.

Do not choose bitrate from resolution alone: use the matching codec, resolution, and frame-rate row in YouTube’s guidance. Leave headroom on the upload connection and test before relying on a long-running stream.

Start the encoder and confirm the live feed

  1. Start FFmpeg with the verified loop configuration and the selected YouTube output settings.
  2. Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Depending on the stream settings, you may need to press Go live there before viewers can watch.
  3. Check the preview for both picture and sound, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health warnings while the feed runs.
  4. To stop, stop FFmpeg’s transmission, then use the Live Control Room end action where applicable. Confirm the stream has ended rather than assuming that closing a terminal completed every Studio action.

Latency, looping, and live-stream rules

Latency

YouTube defines latency as the delay between capture/encoding and viewer playback. Lower latency can increase buffering. For a prerecorded loop without audience interaction, the lowest-latency setting may offer little benefit; choose a setting that behaves reliably for your viewers.

Copyright and reused content

A file being prerecorded does not grant permission to stream its contents. Use material you own or are authorized to broadcast, including music, game footage, and any other included audio or visuals. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules are separate from whether FFmpeg can transmit the file; check the rules that apply to your channel and content before going live.

A continuous loop also does not itself establish eligibility for monetization. YouTube’s channel and content policies apply independently of the encoder configuration.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no signal Incorrect server URL or key, unsupported output configuration, or network/protocol issue Re-copy the URL and key from the selected Live Control Room stream, verify the output protocol and FFmpeg build, then check YouTube’s preview and health status.
The stream starts but stops at the end of the file The input is not actually configured to loop, or the option syntax/placement is wrong for the installed FFmpeg version Check the local FFmpeg manual for input-loop behavior and confirm the option applies to the input file.
Video stutters or YouTube reports poor stream health Bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity, or output settings do not match the selected codec/resolution/frame-rate guidance Use the matching YouTube recommendation, reduce output demand if necessary, and test the connection and stream before leaving it unattended.
Video arrives but audio is absent or distorted Audio mapping, codec, or bitrate configuration is incompatible with the source or output Check that the source has an audio stream, that FFmpeg maps it, and that the chosen AAC or MP3 encoder is available in the local build.
YouTube shows an unexpected stream state Auto-start, manual Go live, or other Live Control Room settings differ from expectations Inspect the selected stream’s settings and follow the displayed Studio workflow; do not infer behavior from a different stream setup.
The encoder is rejected after a key was shared The key may have been reset or exposed, or the encoder is still using an old key Reset the key in Live Control Room if compromised, then update the private FFmpeg configuration.
