For several videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source with a playlist and Loop Playlist enabled; VLC must be installed. The cloud PC must stay running and maintain a stable connection for the stream to continue.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its current rules also set a minimum age of 16 for livestreamers; check YouTube’s current eligibility details for any additional conditions: YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- A cloud PC that can run OBS Studio and play the video file. OBS is free, open-source software for Windows, macOS, and Linux: OBS Studio.
- A video and soundtrack you own or have permission to broadcast. Educational purpose alone does not grant rights to someone else’s footage, music, or images.
- A sufficiently stable cloud-PC network connection for the stream’s configured bitrate. Cloud hosting moves playback and encoding away from your home computer; it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
Before committing to a long broadcast, test the chosen VM with the actual video, OBS settings, audio, and connection. Cloud PCs differ in available CPU, GPU, and hardware encoding; there is no universal specification that guarantees a good result for every resolution and frame rate.
Set up a YouTube Live broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the live-streaming workflow (Live Control Room). Create or schedule a broadcast.
- Choose the encoder connection details YouTube provides for that broadcast. OBS needs the destination and stream key, or an available YouTube account connection, to send its output to the right live event. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Set the audience accurately in YouTube’s workflow. YouTube’s LiveBroadcast API includes a field for designating child-directed content, but that API field is not a complete guide to deciding whether a particular video or channel is made for children. Follow YouTube’s current Studio audience guidance and applicable law; do not assume that choosing a setting by itself establishes legal compliance. See the YouTube LiveBroadcast API reference.
- Decide whether live chat is appropriate for the audience and content. If you enable it, plan who will monitor and moderate it during the broadcast.
Loop one video in OBS
- Make the video file available on the cloud PC, either by uploading it there or using storage the VM can access.
- Open OBS and add a Media Source to the scene. Select the video file.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. OBS documents this option as repeating the media file after playback ends: OBS Media Sources.
- Check the scene preview. Play the source and verify that the picture fills the canvas as intended and that audio is audible without clipping or silence.
- In OBS’s stream settings, enter the YouTube broadcast’s encoder details. Start with OBS’s configured output and video settings; there is no single bitrate or resolution that fits every cloud VM and upload connection. The connection must sustain the selected bitrate.
- Start streaming in OBS, then check YouTube’s live preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm that both picture and sound reach the intended broadcast before relying on it for an extended run.
Loop a playlist of educational videos
- Install VLC on the cloud PC if it is not already installed.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and create a playlist using the video files you want to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist in the source settings. OBS’s VLC source supports playlist looping and requires VLC to be installed; see the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Preview the playlist and check transitions, ordering, sound levels, and the return from the last item to the first. Confirm that every item is authorized for livestreaming.
- Start the YouTube broadcast as described above and monitor the preview and stream health. A loop setting repeats playback; it does not handle an OBS crash, a stopped cloud session, or an unreliable network connection.
Keep OBS running on a cloud PC
A cloud PC is a remote computer, not automatically a managed streaming service. OBS and its media source run inside that computer’s session. The cloud VM, session, OBS process, and network connection all need to remain active. If the provider ends an idle session, reboots the VM, or loses connectivity, the stream may stop even though the video is set to loop.
- Check the provider’s session-persistence and restart behavior before a long run.
- Test whether the VM exposes a usable hardware encoder; do not assume a cloud GPU or hardware encoding is available.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame statistics and YouTube stream health. OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate: OBS: Dropped Frames and General Connection Issues.
- Keep access to the cloud session and a way to restart OBS or reconnect the broadcast if something fails. A looping source alone does not provide automatic recovery.

Common problems and fixes
The broadcast does not appear live
Check that the YouTube broadcast is created and that OBS is using its matching stream key or connection. Verify the channel’s livestream eligibility and restrictions. If the key has been reset or the wrong event was selected, update OBS with the correct connection details.
The video plays once and stops
Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. For a playlist, confirm the source is VLC Video, VLC is installed, and Loop Playlist is enabled.

OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube shows poor stream health
The network may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce the configured bitrate or output demands, check the cloud VM’s connection, and test again while monitoring OBS and YouTube. A higher resolution or frame rate increases the demands on the system and connection.
There is no audio, or audio is out of sync
Preview the media source in OBS and check the source’s audio settings and OBS audio meters. Confirm the file itself plays correctly on the VM. Adjust the source or output configuration, then verify sound and sync in YouTube’s preview before continuing.

The stream stops after the creator disconnects
Determine whether the cloud provider stops the VM or its user session when disconnected or idle. Keep the VM and OBS session active according to the provider’s settings, and test disconnect-and-reconnect behavior before relying on a long broadcast.
The video is blocked, claimed, or restricted
Check the rights for every video, soundtrack, and image in the broadcast. A creator’s educational intent does not substitute for permission. Review YouTube’s livestream requirements and policies, including the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and resolve any rights issue before streaming again.

Content, audience, and policy checks
YouTube requires livestreams to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Before starting, confirm that the channel has permission to broadcast the complete video and audio, set the audience accurately using YouTube’s current guidance, and decide how chat will be handled. The technical steps in OBS do not establish that a stream meets YouTube policy or applicable law.
