How to Loop MP4 Files on YouTube Live Without Pre-Converting Them

Set an MP4 to loop in OBS and send the encoded output to YouTube Live. Here’s how to handle one file or a playlist, meet ingest settings and troubleshoot playback.

To loop one MP4 on YouTube Live without making a separate converted copy, add it to OBS Studio as a Media Source and enable Loop. OBS will play the file repeatedly, but the outgoing live stream still has to be encoded for YouTube. For a playlist of MP4s, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist.

Loop one MP4 in OBS

  1. Create or select a scene. In OBS Studio, choose the scene that should show the prerecorded video.
  2. Add the file. In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source. Create a new source, then choose the local MP4 file in its properties.
  3. Enable looping. Turn on Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS will replay the file when playback completes.
  4. Check picture and sound. Confirm the video is visible in the preview and its audio appears in the OBS mixer. The exact behavior can vary with the file’s codecs, operating system and OBS build.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the stream and obtain its stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect using the stream key or the available account connection. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
  6. Start the broadcast and check its health. Start streaming in OBS, then monitor the incoming preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on the loop.

OBS lists MP4 among the formats supported by Media Source. That means you can load a supported local file directly rather than first exporting another copy in a different format. It does not establish that every MP4 will play smoothly on every system.

Loop a playlist of MP4 files

For several videos that should play in sequence, use OBS’s VLC Video source instead of adding a separate looping Media Source for each file.

  1. Install VLC Media Player. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, select + in the Sources panel → VLC Video, then add the MP4 files to its playlist.
  3. Leave Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the list. OBS also offers Shuffle Playlist if you want randomized order rather than a fixed sequence.
  4. Preview the playlist and check its sound in the mixer before streaming.

Cycle through several files VLC Video Loop Playlist; optional Shuffle Playlist VLC must be installed, with matching 64-bit architecture for 64-bit OBS

What “without re-encoding” means here

In this workflow, it means you do not need to separately convert the source MP4 before loading it into OBS. OBS plays the file as a scene source; the live output is still an encoded stream sent to YouTube. YouTube specifies the video and audio formats and encoder behavior it accepts, and it transcodes live streams into formats for viewers.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

So this is not a promise of bit-for-bit pass-through from the MP4 to YouTube, or a way to avoid encoding the broadcast. It avoids an extra pre-stream conversion when the file plays correctly in OBS. If the file fails or behaves poorly, check its codec and playback compatibility rather than assuming the MP4 extension guarantees support for every encoding.

Set OBS output to meet YouTube’s ingest requirements

YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended video bitrate depends on the codec, resolution and frame rate, so choose a value from YouTube’s current settings table rather than applying one universal bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Stereo audio: YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
  • 5.1 audio: YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; over RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 support is limited to AAC.
  • Codec and bitrate: Match your OBS output to the current YouTube table for your chosen resolution and frame rate. The table may be updated, so consult it when configuring the stream.

For a conventional OBS setup, choose RTMPS: YouTube recommends this encrypted extension of RTMP. Do not treat protocol choice as a guarantee of a particular latency; latency depends on the stream configuration.

Why HLS is not a shortcut for looping an MP4

YouTube also supports HLS and DASH ingest, but neither is a simple “point YouTube at this MP4” replacement for OBS playback. HLS is a specialized, segment-based workflow: YouTube requires HTTPS, a media playlist that updates as segments arrive, muxed audio and video in M2TS segments, H.264 or HEVC video, and AAC audio. YouTube recommends HLS segments of one to four seconds and says they must not exceed five seconds. DASH is also segment-based and generally has higher latency than RTMP, according to Google’s YouTube Live ingestion protocol comparison. For a local MP4 loop, the OBS source method is the more direct route.

Test and troubleshoot before leaving the loop running

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video motion, then monitoring stream health. A static or quiet section alone may not reveal problems that appear during louder or more visually active parts of the recording.

  • The source is black or will not start: Recheck the selected file path and try the MP4 in a local player. MP4 is a container, and its codecs may not be compatible with your system’s OBS playback path. If VLC Video is involved, confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture.
  • The picture works but audio is missing: Check the source’s audio output and OBS mixer meters, then verify that the file itself has an audio track. Confirm that the stream’s audio codec and sample-rate settings meet YouTube’s guidance.
  • The file plays once and stops: Reopen Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a multi-file source, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.
  • YouTube reports ingest or stream-health problems: Compare OBS’s codec, CBR setting, bitrate, frame rate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder table. Check the Live Control Room while sending a test stream.
  • The stream drops or the connection is unstable: Check the encoder connection and internet upload capacity, then review YouTube’s stream-health status. A local loop only controls playback; it does not prevent network or ingest interruptions.

Copyright and YouTube policy still apply

Looping a file does not change who owns its video or audio, or whether you have permission to broadcast it. Use material you created, licensed or otherwise have the right to stream, and review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream rules before broadcasting. A prerecorded stream also does not become original or policy-compliant merely because it is live; make sure the content and channel meet the rules that apply to your use.
