Use OBS’s VLC Video Source to play multiple MP4 files in order and repeat the playlist: add the files, keep Loop Playlist enabled, and connect OBS to YouTube Live with your server URL and stream key. VLC must be installed for this source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
Set up a looping MP4 playlist in OBS
- Install VLC if needed. The VLC Video Source depends on VLC being installed. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for this source. OBS media sources documentation.
- Add the playlist source. In the OBS Sources dock, select +, then choose VLC Video Source. Give it a name if prompted.
- Add the MP4 files in playback order. Add the files to the source playlist in the sequence you want them to play. With Shuffle Playlist off, OBS uses the file-list order; shuffle is off by default.
- Enable looping. Leave Loop Playlist on so playback restarts with the first item after the final item ends. OBS documents this setting as on by default.
- Choose what happens when the source is hidden. OBS’s documented default is Stop when not visible, restart when visible. Change the visibility behavior if you want playback to continue or pause while the source is hidden. This controls the source’s playback, not whether YouTube’s broadcast is live.
- Check the scene. Confirm the source is visible, the playlist is in the intended order, and the video and audio appear as expected in the OBS preview.
OBS documents VLC Video Source as available on Windows, macOS, and Linux when VLC is installed. Its built-in Media Source supports common video formats, including MP4. Source availability can depend on the installed software and compatible architecture. OBS media sources documentation.
Choose between VLC Video Source and Media Source
| Need | Use | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Play several files one after another and repeat the list | VLC Video Source | Provides a playlist with Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist controls; requires VLC to be installed. |
| Repeat one file | Media Source | Use its per-file Loop option to replay that file when playback ends. |
The Media Source’s Loop option is for repeating an individual file; for a multi-file playlist that returns to the first item, use VLC Video Source. OBS media sources documentation.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and get the stream’s server URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open the stream settings and enter the server URL and stream key. Treat the key as private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start the stream from OBS and check the Live Control Room preview before you go live to viewers. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the server URL and stream key, with the preview as the pre-broadcast check. YouTube Help: encoder streaming setup.
If you have never streamed live before, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Allow time for activation and test the setup before an event. YouTube Help: get started with live streaming.

Test the playlist and the broadcast separately
A playlist loop repeats media inside OBS; it does not guarantee that the YouTube broadcast stays connected. Before relying on the setup, OBS recommends checking settings and testing for a few minutes. YouTube also advises leaving upload-bandwidth headroom and using a reliable connection. OBS streaming guide · YouTube Help: troubleshoot live stream issues.
- Watch the OBS preview through the end of the last file and into the next playlist cycle.
- Check that the intended files play in order and that the audio is present.
- Confirm that the Live Control Room receives the stream and displays its preview.
- Test the network and leave spare upload capacity beyond the stream’s outgoing bandwidth needs.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Check and fix |
|---|---|
| VLC Video Source is missing | Install VLC and restart or reopen OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, OBS says VLC must also be 64-bit. |
| The playlist stops after the last file | Open the VLC Video Source settings and enable Loop Playlist. |
| Files play in an unexpected order | Reorder the playlist and check that Shuffle Playlist is off. |
| Playback stops or restarts when changing scenes | Check the source’s visibility behavior. The setting controls what happens when that source is hidden in the scene. |
| OBS plays the playlist, but YouTube has no preview | Check the server URL and stream key in OBS, then verify the Live Control Room preview. |
| The YouTube stream disconnects or becomes unstable | Check connection reliability and available upload bandwidth. Loop Playlist governs media playback, not network continuity. |
