For one prerecorded video, add it to OBS Studio as a Media Source and enable Loop. For multiple files, use OBS’s VLC Video source, add the files as a playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Those settings repeat playback, but OBS does not promise a gapless transition between separate files. Test your actual files and stream before relying on a seamless handoff.
Choose the right looping setup
| Setup | Best suited to | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source with one file looping | Repeating one video or a sequence preassembled into one file | Simple to configure; the end-to-start join still needs testing. |
| OBS VLC Video playlist | Repeating multiple separate files | Convenient playlist control, but no official zero-gap promise at file boundaries. VLC must be installed. |
| Hosted 24/7 streaming service | Keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running without a local encoder computer left on | Features and terms vary; check the provider’s current details. |
Choose based on whether you have one file or several, how precisely the audio and video must join, and whether you can keep a computer powered on and connected. A playlist that repeats is not necessarily a playlist that transitions without a pause.
Set up OBS and YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming on your channel. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Create an OBS scene. Add a Media Source for one local video and turn on Loop. For separate videos, add a VLC Video source, put the files in its playlist, and turn on Loop Playlist. OBS requires VLC installed on the same computer for the VLC source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS documents that 64-bit VLC is required. Refer to OBS’s Media Sources guide.
- Create the YouTube event and connect OBS. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and copy its server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube’s encoder workflow calls for starting the encoder after configuring it; check the Live Control Room preview before making the event public.
- Set encoder output to suit your connection. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your available upload capacity can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the resolution and frame rate you select.
- Test before going public. Run an unlisted or private test using representative video and audio. Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, listen and watch at file boundaries, and monitor the stream after launch. YouTube recommends testing and ongoing monitoring; see its live-streaming tips.
What “without a gap” means in practice
OBS documents that a Media Source can restart after a file finishes and that a VLC playlist can restart after its files are exhausted. It does not document a guarantee that moving between separate playlist files is gapless. A 2020 OBS forum discussion describes a brief pause when repeating a clip through a VLC playlist; the poster reported no pause with a single-file Media Source loop in that setup. That is an individual report, not a guarantee across file formats, hardware, or software versions.
When a tiny pause is unacceptable
Test the exact encodes and transitions in a private or unlisted stream, checking both picture and sound at each boundary. If the playlist handoff is unreliable, one practical approach is to assemble the sequence into a single file and loop that file as a Media Source. This removes transitions between separate playlist items, but the end-to-start join can still show or sound like a break. Test it too; neither approach is a documented guarantee of perfect continuity.

Plan for long-running broadcasts
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream well before an event, starting the encoder before the scheduled start, confirming the preview, and monitoring audio and video. If you are archiving, YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Plan around that stated duration and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive for a long-running channel. See YouTube’s encoder instructions and live-streaming tips.
YouTube lists both computer software and standalone hardware encoders, and its verified-encoder page identifies Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. Being listed is not an endorsement. Compare any provider’s current features and terms before choosing it.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video does not appear in OBS: Install VLC on the same computer, then reopen or check OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC as specified in OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
- The video repeats, but there is a pause between playlist files: Loop Playlist enables repetition, not a guaranteed gapless handoff. Test the boundary; consider preassembling the sequence into one file and testing its loop point.
- YouTube does not show the stream preview: Confirm that the encoder is running and that OBS has the correct server URL and stream key from the intended Live Control Room event. Check the preview before making the stream public.
- The stream reports poor health or drops frames: Check stream health and lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to values sustainable on your upload connection. Match the encoder to YouTube’s current settings guidance.
- You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified and has not had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- The stream ends and you expected a longer archive: YouTube’s encoder article says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Verify current platform behavior and make an archive plan rather than assuming a longer stream will be saved automatically.
