How to Loop Rain Videos with FFmpeg for YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a rain video indefinitely with FFmpeg, put -stream_loop -1 before the video’s -i input option. Add -re before the input so FFmpeg reads the file at its normal speed, then encode and send it to the RTMPS ingest URL and private stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The loop flag repeats the file; it does not guarantee a seamless loop, continuous network delivery, or an always-on broadcast.

How do I loop a video with FFmpeg?

-stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat the following input indefinitely. Because it is an input option, it must appear before the matching -i. For a file used as a live source, -re makes FFmpeg read at the file’s native frame rate instead of sending it as fast as it can process it.

Starting command for a rain video

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i rain.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

This is an illustrative command pattern, not a tested recipe. Replace the final placeholder with the RTMPS ingest URL and private stream key YouTube provides for your broadcast. Do not publish the key in a script, screenshot, command history, or log. The example’s 4.5 Mbps video bitrate is not a universal recommendation: choose a rate for your actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and stable upload capacity.

Match the keyframe interval to the frame rate

The -g value sets the GOP length in frames. A value of 60 at 30 fps creates a two-second interval; for another frame rate, adjust the GOP so the interval matches YouTube’s recommended two seconds. YouTube allows keyframe intervals up to four seconds, but recommends two.

How do I stream a pre-recorded video on YouTube Live?

Choose an ingestion method

For a basic rain-video stream, RTMPS is the simpler default. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, and its current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). FFmpeg’s example above uses H.264 and AAC. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for current guidance.

YouTube also documents HLS ingestion for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. HLS sends segments rather than one continuous stream, so it has higher latency and more setup constraints. Its current setup guidance specifies 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. For the HLS requirements, see YouTube’s HLS ingestion setup.

Set the bitrate for the profile, not the sample command

YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, on its help page accessed in 2026, include the following values. They are configuration recommendations, not independent performance measurements; other codecs have different ranges.

Output profile YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate
720p30 8 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps

Choose an output profile your source and sustained upload connection can support reliably. In the sample, -b:v sets the target video bitrate, while -maxrate and -bufsize constrain rate variation. To use a constant bitrate mode, retain matching target and maximum rates and check the current encoder and YouTube settings for the selected codec.

Handle audio deliberately

The sample assumes rain.mp4 contains an audio stream. If it does not, -c:a aac does not create sound: provide an audio source or deliberately configure audio mapping and silence, then verify YouTube accepts the result. If you use a separate audio file, it needs its own looping or source logic and explicit stream mapping; looping the video input alone does not ensure the separate audio repeats as intended.

How do I make a rain video play continuously?

FFmpeg can repeat the file, but the visual and audible transition at the end-to-start boundary depends on the media itself. Before broadcasting for a long session, inspect at least one complete pass and the repeat point. A static rain scene may still reveal a sudden change in drops, lighting, framing, background noise, or audio level.

Prepare the stream in YouTube Live Control Room

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and retrieve its ingest URL and stream key. Keep the key private.
  2. Use the RTMPS ingest URL and key in the command’s final destination, replacing both placeholders. Do not paste a real key into a public page or shared script.
  3. Set the FFmpeg output resolution and frame rate to a profile supported by your source, encoder, upload connection, and YouTube’s current guidance.
  4. Run a pre-stream test with representative movement and audio. YouTube recommends testing with similar content and checking stream health and any messages during the broadcast.
  5. Start FFmpeg and monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback. A loop flag does not restart FFmpeg after a crash, prevent a host from sleeping or restarting, repair a network failure, or override channel eligibility and live-stream policies.

Preflight checklist

  • -stream_loop -1 is before the corresponding -i.
  • -re is included for the file-based real-time source.
  • The chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval match YouTube’s current guidance and the connection’s reliable capacity.
  • The source has audio, or a separate audio/silence plan is mapped and tested.
  • The file’s end-to-start transition has been checked for visible or audible gaps, clicks, black frames, or abrupt changes.
  • The ingest address and private key are correct, and the key is not exposed in public materials.
  • YouTube’s stream-health messages are monitored during a test and broadcast.
  • You have the rights to use the rain video and audio, and the channel complies with YouTube’s current live-stream and content policies. Repeating a file does not establish that you have permission to use it or that it qualifies for monetization.

Troubleshooting FFmpeg rain streams

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
The video plays once and stops -stream_loop -1 is missing or placed after the input it should affect. Move it before that file’s -i, for example -stream_loop -1 -i rain.mp4.
FFmpeg sends the file too quickly The file input is not being paced in real time. Put -re before the file’s -i.
YouTube reports unstable stream health The selected output bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the connection may fluctuate. Test sustained upload capacity, lower the output profile or bitrate if needed, and repeat the test with representative content.
The stream has no sound The input has no audio track; choosing AAC as an output codec does not generate an audio source. Inspect the input streams. Add and map an audio source, or configure and test silence deliberately.
Audio does not repeat with the video Separate audio was not independently looped and mapped. Set up looping/source logic for the audio input and explicitly map the intended video and audio streams.
YouTube flags the keyframe interval The GOP length does not correspond to the chosen frame rate or exceeds the allowed interval. Set the GOP to about two seconds in frames; YouTube recommends two seconds and allows no more than four.
The loop is technically running but looks or sounds abrupt The source file’s ending does not transition cleanly to its beginning. Review the boundary and edit or replace the source so the transition is acceptable before using it live.
The stream stops after FFmpeg exits The loop flag repeats the input only while the FFmpeg process remains running. Check the process, host sleep/restart behavior, network, and YouTube stream-health notices. The option does not provide process supervision or uninterrupted delivery.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a pre-recorded YouTube stream to continue without keeping a computer or home connection on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps looping if your computer is off and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The same plan supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card required, once per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
