To loop a sequence of short clips as a YouTube Live broadcast, run them through an encoder such as OBS: use a VLC Video Source for a multi-clip playlist, enable Loop Playlist, and send the scene to YouTube using an encoder stream key. YouTube’s own playlist-repeat control only repeats playback for viewers; it does not turn a playlist into a live broadcast. Loop settings make clips repeat, but they do not guarantee frame-perfect transitions, so test the complete sequence and inspect the live preview before going public.
Set up an ordered playlist in OBS
- Install VLC if needed. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Create a scene for the broadcast. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source and add your clips in the order you want them to play. Loop Playlist is enabled by default, and Shuffle Playlist is off by default; check both settings rather than assuming they remain at their defaults.
- Fit the picture to the output. Check each clip in the OBS canvas. Clips with different aspect ratios or dimensions may not fill the same area in the same way; adjust the source framing as needed and watch for exposed canvas around the image.
- Check sound and sequence behavior. Play through the list, including the point where the final clip returns to the first. Listen for abrupt changes in volume and verify that every clip appears in the intended order.
For a single repeating clip rather than a playlist, OBS Media Source is simpler: add the file and enable Loop. OBS documents that this restarts the file after playback completes.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube’s preview. Start or schedule the public event as appropriate for your setup; YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for creators who want to share content and manage a more advanced production.
Before broadcasting publicly, test the whole playlist in OBS and watch the incoming preview in Live Control Room. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and recommends checking the preview and monitoring stream quality. See YouTube live streaming tips and Streaming tips.
Reduce the chance of black frames at clip boundaries
Loop Playlist controls what happens when the playlist reaches its end; it is not a guarantee of gap-free playback between every pair of files. The available documentation does not promise frame-perfect transitions across all media files, codecs, frame rates, or durations. Test the actual clips together, paying particular attention to the end of each clip and the return from the last clip to the first. Then inspect the encoder preview rather than relying only on what the OBS canvas shows.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Do not unload your only picture source during a critical transition. OBS warns that enabling “Close file when inactive” can cause a small period when a source is not showing while it reloads after being shown again.
- Use a cover scene for operational recovery. A separate scene with a still image or other already-rendered background can conceal a source reload while you address it. It cannot repair a gap that is part of the clips or playlist playback itself.
- Check audio as well as video. A picture that appears continuous can still have a pause, abrupt level change, or unwanted silence at a boundary.
Choose YouTube encoder settings for your output
For YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS configuration, the current settings guidance supports H.264, calls for constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the matching row for your chosen output rather than treating one bitrate as universal. The following H.264 values are YouTube’s encoder-ingestion recommendations on its settings page, accessed October 3, 2026—not measurements of OBS playlist performance.
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations for the listed H.264 outputs; they are not guarantees that a particular internet connection will sustain a stream. Check YouTube’s full live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the output you intend to use, then test and monitor the incoming stream.

What to troubleshoot when you see a black frame
- The VLC source is blank or unavailable: confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. Recheck that the intended files are present in the source’s playlist.
- The order changes on repeat: check that Shuffle Playlist is off and that the list contains the files in the desired order.
- A source goes blank after being hidden: check whether “Close file when inactive” is enabled. OBS notes that the source can take a short time to reappear while it reloads. Keep an already-rendered cover scene available for recovery.
- A gap occurs between clips while the source stays active: test the files and boundaries as a complete sequence. The loop checkbox alone cannot establish that every file transition will be gap-free.
- The OBS canvas looks right but YouTube’s preview does not: verify that OBS is sending the intended scene and that YouTube is receiving the stream. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health guidance before starting the public event.
- The stream is unstable or quality is poor: confirm the codec, CBR mode, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s matching recommendations. Monitor the incoming feed and test your connection before going live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want uploaded clips to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube streams and uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
