To loop children’s stories in a vertical YouTube livestream, arrange prerecorded, rights-cleared videos in a portrait scene in OBS Studio, enable looping for a single video or playlist, then send the encoder feed through YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. A looping source does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 service: the computer, connection, encoder, or YouTube session can stop, so plan to monitor and recover the stream.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16.
- OBS Studio and your story videos. To use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist, VLC must also be installed.
- A stable computer and internet connection for the length of the broadcast. With this do-it-yourself method, OBS runs on your computer; turning it off or losing the connection can interrupt the encoder feed.
- Permission to livestream every story, illustration, animation, recording, narration, and music track in the program. Check separately whether your permission covers the intended territory and an archived replay.
Confirm your channel’s eligibility and current options in YouTube Studio before preparing for a long broadcast. YouTube’s requirements and Live Control Room options can change.
Prepare the stories and portrait layout
Check rights before building the playlist
Use original material or material whose rights explicitly cover livestreaming. Owning a physical picture book does not, by itself, grant permission to broadcast its text or illustrations. YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights to use live content on Google services. YouTube also scans livestreams for third-party content: a match can replace the stream with a placeholder, trigger a warning, interrupt the feed, or terminate it. Even licensed material may need the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID.
If a license is unclear, do not assume that a purchase, credit, or permission to post a video covers a livestream or replay. Use original or expressly licensed assets, and seek advice specific to the relevant jurisdiction when needed.

Design for 9:16 viewing
Make the important part of each scene readable in a portrait frame: keep faces, captions, and key illustrations inside the visible area, and check that narration and music are audible. YouTube describes vertical video as 9:16 and horizontal video as 16:9. Its dual-stream vertical output may use a center crop of the horizontal picture, so a landscape composition can cut off story details. Preview the actual vertical result rather than assuming a crop will preserve the page or artwork.
Choose a portrait-native composition if the story depends on details near the edges of the image. If you want both horizontal and vertical viewing, inspect the dual-stream layout in Live Control Room before launching; YouTube describes a shared URL and chat for dual output.
Set up the loop in OBS
- Build the scene. Create an OBS scene with the portrait composition you intend to broadcast. Add and position the story video and any other visuals, then check the result in the preview.
- Loop one video. Add a Media Source, select the story file, and turn on its Loop setting. Check that the file restarts cleanly at the end.
- Loop several videos. Add a VLC Video source, select the playlist, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. VLC must be installed for this source. Check the transitions between files and confirm the playlist returns to its beginning.
- Check sound and framing. Play the scene in OBS and verify that the video, narration, and music work together, that there is no unintended silence, and that important visual details remain legible in portrait.
Connect OBS to YouTube and start the stream
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Choose the encoder workflow and connect OBS using the stream settings and stream key shown for your broadcast. Treat the key as a password; do not share it in a recording, screenshot, or public chat.
- Choose the output layout before going live. Decide whether to use portrait output or YouTube’s dual horizontal-and-vertical output. YouTube says encoder streams can use horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats by default, with other vertical layout options available. The vertical setting cannot be added after a stream has started.
- Review the encoder settings shown for your stream. Match OBS’s output to the current settings YouTube provides in Live Control Room. The appropriate bitrate and other encoder values depend on the output you choose and the current YouTube guidance; do not rely on an old preset without checking. The materials available here do not establish a single bitrate or keyframe interval for every setup.
- Preview before launch. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed, the portrait crop or layout is correct, audio is present, and the video is moving. Start the broadcast only after checking the preview.
- Watch the live output. Confirm that viewers can see the stream and that the loop continues past the first file or playlist cycle. A successful start is not proof that the setup will stay live unattended.
Choose the right audience setting for children’s stories
If the stories are directed at children, set the audience accurately as made for kids in YouTube’s publishing workflow. YouTube names stories, songs, characters, activities, and other child-directed subject matter as relevant signals. It says, “We trust you to set your audience accurately, and we’ll only override your audience setting choice in cases of error or abuse.” Do not assume automated systems will choose correctly for you.

A made-for-kids designation restricts features on the individual stream. YouTube lists live chat, comments, notifications, personalized advertising, channel memberships, and Super Chat among the unavailable features. The designation does not automatically place a video in the YouTube Kids app.

YouTube also states that “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” Labeling a stream made for kids does not replace the need to follow those guidelines or clear the rights to its contents.
Know where viewers can find vertical live video
YouTube’s vertical live feed is app-focused and is not currently available on tablets according to its viewer help guidance. Viewers can enter full screen and browse other vertical live streams; YouTube’s general live-streaming guide also says viewers can find vertical live streams while browsing Shorts on mobile. Scheduled livestreams and Premieres do not appear in that vertical feed.

That makes vertical a useful choice for portrait viewing and mobile discovery, not a guarantee that every viewer will see the same layout or find the stream through the same route. Consider whether the story artwork suits a phone screen as well as conventional horizontal playback on a desktop or television.

The picture stops at the end of the story
Check that the selected source is the one you configured to loop. For a single file, verify Loop in Media Source; for a playlist, verify Loop Playlist in VLC Video. Test through a complete cycle in OBS before going live.
The playlist does not play
Confirm VLC is installed, the intended files are in the VLC Video playlist, and the source is visible in the scene. Play the playlist in OBS and check that it advances from one file to the next and returns to the beginning.
The stream is live but the story is cropped or hard to read
Inspect the Live Control Room preview, especially if you selected dual output. A center crop can remove details at the edges of a horizontal image. Rework the scene for portrait, choose a suitable vertical layout, or use a portrait-native version before starting again; you cannot add the vertical setting after the stream has begun.

Viewers cannot hear narration or music
Check the OBS scene’s audio source and meters, then listen to the preview. Confirm the video file itself includes the expected audio and that the selected source is not muted. Test the complete scene before relying on it for an unattended period.
The YouTube feed disappears or shows a copyright interruption
Check Live Control Room and OBS to determine whether the encoder stopped, the connection dropped, or YouTube interrupted the stream. If a third-party-content match appears, review the rights for that specific material. A license may not prevent a Content ID interruption unless the rights owner has allowlisted the channel. Do not simply restart the same material without resolving the rights issue.
The channel cannot start a livestream
Check channel verification, whether a live-streaming restriction applies from the previous 90 days, and the creator’s age against YouTube’s current eligibility guidance. Resolve eligibility issues before relying on the channel for a continuous broadcast.
The vertical live feed is not showing the stream
Check whether the viewer is using the YouTube app on a supported device and whether the stream is live rather than scheduled or a Premiere. YouTube’s vertical discovery guidance does not promise the same feed experience across devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Looping solves what happens when a media file reaches its end; it does not provide failover for a stopped encoder, failed connection, or ended platform session. For a computer-based setup, check the live output periodically, confirm the computer and network remain available, and know how you will restart the encoder and re-enter Live Control Room if the broadcast ends. Test the full workflow—including the loop, sound, portrait framing, and recovery steps—before treating it as a continuous channel.
