You can run a 24/7 sleep ambience livestream on YouTube without OBS by sending a prepared, rights-cleared video and audio loop through another encoder—or by using a cloud service that broadcasts uploaded video for you. YouTube still needs an encoder-based feed: avoiding OBS does not eliminate the encoder. A local setup keeps your computer and connection responsible for the stream; a cloud setup can keep your home computer off.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says channels must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; its help page also says streamers must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance for current requirements.
- A prepared ambience video and soundtrack that you created or are authorized to use in a continuous YouTube livestream.
- An encoder other than OBS that can send a live feed to YouTube and, for a loop, repeat the video and audio.
- A reliable internet connection and a plan for monitoring the stream, recovering from interruptions, and preserving a replay if you need one.
YouTube lists encoder streaming alongside mobile, webcam, and console options. It describes encoders as useful for overlays and hardware; for a looping prerecorded scene, an encoder workflow is the relevant approach. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for live ingest. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.
Prepare the sleep ambience video and audio
Use media cleared for continuous live use
Use your own scene, animation, field recording, music, or soundscape, or obtain permission that covers the intended live broadcast. A license for an ordinary upload may not cover continuous livestreaming, every territory, or all included music and footage. Keep copies of licenses and other permission records.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. It may show a placeholder, warn you, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. Even when you have a license, a rights holder may need to add your channel to an allowlist. YouTube’s copyright guidance states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Make the loop suitable for a long broadcast
- Check that the image and audio loop cleanly, without a sudden flash, silence, click, or abrupt change at the seam.
- Listen to the entire audio chain at a comfortable level before going live. Confirm that the ambience does not clip and that there is no unintended microphone or desktop audio.
- Use a stable scene and a consistent audio level. If the media includes a visible countdown, advertisements, or a spoken intro, decide whether those interruptions suit an overnight sleep stream.
- Keep a copy of the final source file and a separate backup of any original recordings and license documents.
Choose where the encoder will run
Local computer with a non-OBS encoder
Install or configure an encoder that supports YouTube’s ingest settings and can loop your media. The exact controls vary by encoder, so confirm that it can repeat both the video and audio continuously and reconnect after a dropped connection. The computer must remain powered on, connected to the internet, and able to recover from sleep, software crashes, and restarts. You remain responsible for power, network stability, updates, and monitoring.
Cloud broadcasting service
A cloud service can broadcast uploaded prerecorded media without leaving your own computer running. Check the provider’s current YouTube support, media and stream limits, restart behavior, credential handling, archive implications, support terms, and price before relying on it. StreamZop describes continuous prerecorded broadcasts to YouTube and claims managed cloud servers and automatic restarts; those are provider claims, not independently established uptime or performance guarantees. Create the YouTube livestream and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a new livestream or schedule one. Follow YouTube’s current eligibility and setup prompts.
- Open the stream settings. Copy the ingest server/settings and stream key shown for that broadcast into your chosen encoder. Use RTMPS when the encoder offers it and YouTube’s settings specify it.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it with anyone who does not need access. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure the source and loop. Select the prepared video and audio, enable looping, and confirm that the encoder will keep sending the feed rather than stop at the end of the file.
- Start a test broadcast. Send the feed and check the Live Control Room before leaving it unattended. Verify the picture is stable, the audio is present at the intended level, and YouTube shows the stream as live.
- Set a monitoring and recovery plan. Decide how you will learn about a dropped stream and who can restart it. For a local setup, confirm the encoder reconnects after a network interruption and that the computer will not sleep. Do not assume a provider has a particular uptime rate or service-level guarantee unless its current terms establish one.
Plan for replays and archive limits
A 24/7 broadcast is not a reliable way to preserve one complete YouTube replay. YouTube warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, and YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. If you need a replay, consider recording independently or scheduling separate sessions shorter than 12 hours. Splitting sessions is an operational workaround, not a guarantee that every session will be archived. A local encoder may offer recording controls; check its settings and storage needs before broadcasting.
Understand copyright and monetization separately
Copyright permission is necessary, but it does not guarantee monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy can make repetitive or mass-produced content ineligible and expects original, authentic material. A simple repeated loop may not qualify even if you own or licensed every asset. Make the channel’s creative contribution clear, avoid treating a minimally changed template as a monetization guarantee, and review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

YouTube’s livestream terms also require you to have the rights needed for live content, including applicable music rights. Review the YouTube Terms of Service and obtain permissions that cover the actual broadcast use.

YouTube does not show the stream as live
- Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s livestream eligibility requirements.
- Check that the encoder is using the ingest settings and stream key for the correct broadcast.
- Verify the encoder is connected and sending data; if the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace it in the encoder.
The stream stops when the video reaches its end
Enable looping in the encoder or broadcasting service, and confirm that both picture and audio repeat. Test through at least one full loop before depending on it overnight.
The stream drops during the night
For a local setup, check the network connection, power settings, computer sleep behavior, encoder reconnect options, and restart plan. For a managed service, consult its current status and recovery documentation or support; do not infer an uptime guarantee from a restart feature.

YouTube interrupts the broadcast or shows a placeholder
Check YouTube Studio for a copyright warning or other restriction. Remove or replace the matched material, confirm that your permission covers continuous live use, and ask the rights holder about allowlisting if applicable.
The replay is missing or incomplete
Check the stream duration. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use independent recording or shorter sessions if replay retention matters.
The ambience is silent, clipped, or uneven
Inspect the encoder’s selected audio source and levels, then listen to the output during a test broadcast. Check the file itself for silent sections or a poor loop seam.
