Before you set up a 24/7 stream
- Confirm live access. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days; the streamer must be at least 16. Check access before preparing the stream. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
- Clear the audio rights. Use noise you created, commissioned, or licensed for live broadcast and any saved replay. Permission to listen to or download a track does not necessarily include broadcast rights. Keep license records. YouTube’s Livestream terms put responsibility for necessary rights on the creator.
- Decide whether you need a replay. YouTube says broadcasts under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous stream is therefore not a dependable single complete replay. Keep a local recording if an archive matters. YouTube: Archive live streams.

Make the stream with your own computer
You need a computer that can run encoder software such as OBS, a stable internet connection, a prepared audio file, and a black video scene. YouTube does not require a dedicated encoder, microphone, capture card or audio interface for this use. Exact audio-loop controls vary by software version and operating system, so verify the current controls in your encoder.
- Prepare the audio file. Use a track with the required broadcast and archive rights. Listen through it before going live to check for clicks, gaps, abrupt starts or endings, clipping, and unwanted system sounds. Retain the license or permission details.
- Create a black video scene and route the audio. In your encoder, make a scene whose video output is black, then add or route the prepared noise file to the stream’s audio mix. Set playback to continue or loop. Monitor the mix to ensure it remains audible without clipping and that the black image stays on screen. YouTube documents the encoder connection workflow, not a specific OBS scene recipe; the exact controls depend on the software and operating system.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Choose the privacy setting and other details appropriate to a test or public broadcast. In the encoder’s stream settings, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it grants access to your stream, so reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed. - Check output before publishing. Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the image is black and the noise is audible and stable. Test playback from a viewer device, and, if recording locally, confirm the file is growing. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate; when ready, select Go live in Live Control Room if prompted. YouTube recommends checking stream quality and the preview. YouTube live streaming tips.
- Plan for interruptions and replays. A local encoder depends on the computer staying powered on, the software continuing to run, and the connection remaining available. Monitor stream health and have a way to restart the encoder and reconnect after a failure; uninterrupted service is not guaranteed. If you need a replay, plan separate sessions shorter than 12 hours or make local recordings, knowing that ending and restarting creates a broadcast interruption and separate streams.
Choose video quality for a static black screen
A black still image does not need elaborate video production. Choose an output setting and bitrate your connection can reliably sustain rather than increasing them without a reason. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and stream-quality guidance when configuring your output; supported settings can change. Test the actual viewer playback, since a healthy encoder preview alone does not establish that every viewer’s connection will play smoothly.

Having permission to use the audio is essential, but permission alone does not guarantee monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies identify repetitive or mass-produced material as inauthentic content that may be ineligible. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies before building a channel around long-running ambient streams.
For watch-hour thresholds, YouTube says livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to video on demand do not count as qualified public watch hours. Check the applicable YouTube Partner Program eligibility requirements; a long broadcast should not be assumed to contribute qualifying hours simply because it was live.

Troubleshooting a black-screen noise stream
- Live Control Room shows no incoming stream: confirm the encoder is started and that its server URL and stream key match the current YouTube stream. Reset an exposed key and update the encoder with the replacement.
- The preview is black but silent: check that the audio file is routed to the stream mix, that playback is active or looping, and that the encoder’s audio meters respond. Listen from a separate viewer device before publishing.
- Noise stops or has a gap: inspect the file’s ending and loop behavior in the encoder, then listen across the transition. Software-specific playback behavior varies, so test the exact configuration you plan to leave running.
- Playback stutters or the stream drops: lower output demands to a level the available connection can sustain, check the connection and computer load, and reconnect the encoder if needed. YouTube recommends selecting quality that is reliable for the available connection; no local setup can guarantee uninterrupted service.
- No complete replay appears: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use shorter sessions if the platform archive is needed, or keep a local recording and verify that it is being saved.
- The stream is live but later watch hours are absent: check whether the livestream was public and converted to VOD; unlisted, deleted, or non-VOD livestreams do not count as qualified watch hours under YouTube’s stated rules.
